Spicy House

“its also BYOB so if that's what you're into try to keep up with the northern locals around here, they are serious about their drinking”

“The lamb in cumin was very well prepared and the spices weren't too strong to the point where you're just choking on it.”

“They can get pretty crowded and the place doesn't look super fancy, but it is very authentic.”

  1. This place is an ABSOLUTE GEM! there really is nothing else i can say about this establishment. The food is delicious, the portions are ridiculously large, and the price is warehouse manufacturer cheap! this place has since become a staple which I regularly visit

A combination of Northern Chinese cusine with some elements of Schezuan, an interesting combination, but the stars here are definitely of the "Dong Bei" variety.

Some of the dishes I would definitely recommend would be

the Cumin Lamb, done extremely well, fairly spicy with a hardy helping of cumin seeds, the lamb is extremely tender and pairs well with the peppers, cumin and spice medley

Black pepper beef/steak, again the beef is extremely tender and moist, hard to explain how it tastes, but  was incredibly impressed that it had a hint of sweetness to it which complimented the taste

beef tendon with sea cucumber, definitely more beef tendon than sea cucumber, but that combination alone with the healthy helping of scallions and soy sauce really gave this dish an incredibly rich and savory flavor

Last but not least my favorite, Fried eggplants in a sweet garlic sauce. I have never tasted anything like this before. Eggplant wedges were deep fried combined with peppers onions scallions and a sweet garlic sauce topped with sesame seeds which created an extremely sublime combination of sweet and savory with a great crunchy texture, This dish would definitely be in the mix for my last meal on earth.

again truly a undiscovered slightly out of the way gem. its also BYOB so if that's what you're into try to keep up with the northern locals around here, they are serious about their drinking

  2. Finally, after 10 months of waiting for my left leg to recover from my accident last January, we returned to Flushing to continue our quest to try all the great variations of Chinese Cuisine…and there are alot! The streets and sidewalks leave alot to be desired and I needed to be very careful so as not to take a flop on a dip or break in the walking surface. With BG holding my hand we carefully crossed Main Street to try Spicy House…No sign in English but from previous reviews I noted it was next door to a big RED sign…And there it was..this very basic and non pretentious restaurant basically across the street from HLY and Grand Sizchuan. We were received by friendly staff and I double checked on the BYOB as a small sign on the door said NO Alcoholic beverages allowed. We had two bottles of wine and they had no problem with us bringing it in. What happened after that was both interesting and entertaining. As we were seated a waitress approached and told us that this restaurant is not American Chinese and did we want to be here. We told her we knew that and we had chosen this place because of that. Then she reminded us their food was prepared very spicy and again we said thats great bring it on. That being said we were on to the menu..What she said was true, the menu is really ethnic and included many items we have never tried. For Appy we got the Chefs Special Tofu..it was mashed with spices and hot peppers and tasted wonderful but there was so much we took it home and had it with crackers the next day. They are not Sezchuan as they had none of the items like Dan Dan Noodles et. al….We understood the entres were very large so we went straight to them next. Our favorite was the Dry Wok Spicy Oxtail. full of meat on the bones and the sauce was outrageous! Really a great choice…We also got one of our favorites…the Sliced Fish in Hot Chili Oil. This was really good..the fish was firm and the oil was HOT. I always try to eat like a soup but its too damned spicy to just spoon it into your mouth…its a throat closer!! I was glad I had the great Bedell Cabernet Franc to cut the heat and numb me to the burn.

This nondescript restaurant on the corner of Dahlia and Main St deserves a visit just because they are so different from the more lightly Americanized places in the area. Their English was just OK but we had no problem communicating our wishes. We could have been in China so it was a trip being there. We will certainly return to try more of their extensive menu.

  3. Solid. Tasty. You can't possibly order the wrong thing here. Just point to the pictures. One of the better places in this area.

  4. This is a review for the "new" Spicy House. Same location, different owner?

Why come here? Twice the portion for the same price as "Flushing". It seems Flushing is moving out here slowly and this is a bit (a few blocks) out of the way from the Heart of Flushing, but the foods excellent, price is incredible, and the portions are HUGE. Our waiter messed up one order for White Sauce Seafood dish, he gave us a salty brown sauced Pork, Liver and Kidney dish instead and refused to take it back – but my parents explained that if he did he would be fired so we took one for the team. Would still go back though!
