How has this thing been rolling around New York for a week but not been added on Yelp? To promote the opening of the first Sprinkles shop in NYC, they've been dispatching a van everyday with 500-1000 cupcakes, free to the first 500-1000 customers!
Today I was in Bryant Park when I got a tweet that the Sprinkles van was there too… well, at 40th and 6th. So I swung by for my free red velvet cupcake.
I've been on a search for the perfect red velvet cupcake in NY, and I haven't done very well at finding it. Crumbs, Magnolia's, and Baked by Melissa's have all let me down.
This red velvet cupcake is by far the best red velvet cupcake I've had from a cupcakery in NYC thus far. For once, the cream cheese frosting was absolutely delicious. It was perfect. The cake was still lacking a bit… not the right flavor but perfectly dense and moist. And very red. And then there was this weird confectionary dot on top of my cupcake. I thought it might be fondant but it was hard as a rock. I couldn't bite through it. It also looked a bit like someone took half of a graphic design class and MS Painted it onto the cupcake (see my photos).
I wanted a chai latte cupcake (because I make those myself), but the girl in the truck told me they only make those on Friday… but today was Friday. Weird.
They're going to have free cupcakes for the rest of the weekend, it seems. They open their new store in NYC on Friday, May 13th and they have a bunch of flavors, along with a cute little schedule.
