I was brought in by Indian friends. I had dosas before but not this large. The bread was so deliciously fried… I want one right now! It's one of the few times I wished I lived in Jersey City lol. I don't think you can find this good a dosa in Manhattan at least.
It's a completely vegetarian place it seems, and all their flavors seem amazing. There's so many food options too… Who said veggie = limited?
The prices are low and there's complimentary soup to accompany the dosas. WHAT ELSE CAN YOU ASK FOR IN LIFE. They also have great chutneys although I didn't get any really hot one… and I like hot spicy food, but I'm sure they have it somewhere.
Actually, there's one thing I would ask for: real plates and utensils, even if prices were a bit higher. At least having the option. I dislike plastic disposables.
p.s. Parking in the area can be hard to find.
This is a restaurant where you don't look at the decor, the people cooking inside the open kitchen, all the unsanitary red flags, and look past the foam/plastic plates and spoons. The only thing you need to worry about here is how many bowls of sambar you're doing to devour. Honestly, probably some of the best, if not the best, sambar I've ever had.
You're not coming here for an elegant meal. You're coming here to eat some delicious, home-style dosa (or other south Indian delicacies) and fill your bowl up with unlimited sambar…and if you don't spill any or get your hands dirty, you didn't do it right. Now, this is not the "best" dosa I've ever had, but let me tell you, it's pretty damn tasty. My go to order is the Mysore Masala Dosa and I double-down on both of their chutneys – coconut and the red one (forget what kind it is, but a bit spicy). I drench eat bite in a load of sambar, that, as I mentioned before, you get unlimited quantities of. There's a black crockpot in the back of the restaurant with a large ladle and you just take it and go. I usually ask for masala (the potato shak/subzi) on the side, but they always forget, so I just scoop it out myself when I get the dosa (I'm a slow eater and the dosa starts to get soggy). I also think the masala (spice) on the dosa is the same that's in the red chutney, which explains why I like it so much.
I've also had the masala idly and it's different than probably what you're thinking. The idly is cut into smaller pieces/cubes, and it's mixed with some peanuts. The idly's itself are pretty tasty – again, mixed with that red masala spice, and then you just take each piece on a spoon, dip it into the sambar, and taste the aroma of flavors as they melt in your mouth (and sip on water because it's extremely hot – temperature).
Overall, it's a good place. Could service be better and the people who work there be a bit nicer? Of course, but who knows if/when that will ever change. They're doing what they're doing and their customers enjoy it and keep coming back. Delicious food, but don't be expecting a delightful dining experience.
Came here with my anorexic friend (we're going to more restaurants than ever.. I think I found the cure!) we shared a palak paneer masala dosai. I thought it would be palak paneer the curry stuffed inside the dosAi but instead the spinach was in the dosai batter itself which was a little disappointing but oh well. We were starving so it was good anyhow. Bathrooms are nasty, Indian style.
I was SO disappointed with this place. I understand having an extensive list of different dosas is awesome but at least make them all unique! I got the cheese palak dosa expecting a spinach filling and something delicious because I've had a delicious palak dosa before. Anyway what I got was a huge dosa with the standard potato filling with american cheese (at least use indian cheese) and here's the palak part, a spinach chutney that was extremely lightly spread and dried on the dosa. I wanted to leave and go to dosa hut up the block.
Everyone else in the table ordered different things but technically the same filling with very little variations. It all tastes the same!
Even the sambar was salt-less. I'm sorry but I'm never coming back regardless of how large the dosas may be.
2 stars for having a long list of dosas and quick service. But they actually deserve 1.5.
Delicious Dosa and tons of different options. This place is cash only so be prepared before ordering. Parking/driving in this area is a complete nightmare so good luck with that.
If you're looking for atmosphere- do not make this your first date or anything like that. Think chinese takeout joint.
The food is cheap cheap cheap and so delicious. 2 Dosas, 2 drinks for under $15. Can't beat it.
One of the places where you get absolutely authentic dosa- how God intended dosa to be. The dosa selection is extensive with some very interesting combinations. We went on a Saturday night and the place was crowded. Although it was self service..people working there were very polite and friendly.. One of the better choices on Newark avenue..
One of my favorite go to spot for south indian food. Their sambhar is always good and it's free 🙂 although the taste is different each time but I like it every time.
Few of my favorites are dahi vada, poori sabji, bangalore masala dosa, idly and the list goes on. I have never left disappointed from this place.
Prices are affordable and food is tasty.
Good Dosa!
