So this is apparently a legendary Queens Thai food spot. I have friends who live in the neighbourhood but had never been. So when we got into NYC and looking for a late lunch, they said we should try here.
Sure, sounds great.
SriPraPhai doesn't look like much. Your basic Thai restaurant, bunch of seating as you walk in and around the corner, kind of just… meh.
But I wasn't there for the decor, I was there for the food. And the food was… good. Yeah. I hot green Thai chili with beef and it was nice and spicy and we did some dumplings which were well cooked and had a nice sauce. It was a good meal. But was it the rave amazing legendary meal that I was promised? No. But it was quality and authentic, which was nice.
My frustration came from the service, which was actually pretty terrible. Besides the fact that it was slow and hell and we could barely get a waitress to stop at our table, we actually had a bad run-in with the staff. My lovely lady found a long black hair in her pad thai (gross). She tossed it away and asked them to take the food back because of the hair.
They took the food and then came back, demanding to see the hair. When we told them we didn't have it anymore, they shrugged and walked away. Ok. Only, then, the meal was still on our bill at the end of the evening.
I asked the manager about it, and she told me again, she needed to see the hair. I told her we didn't have it, obviously. She then brought out the dish again (which they had been keeping in the back for some reason?), and told me there was no hair. Ok. We went back and forth about this for a while and she finally decided to take it off the bill, I think just to shut me up.
That was pretty bad. Despite it's reputation, I'm not sure I'd be back here in a hurry.
The food is still great here. Authentic Thai food, almost feels like im back on vacation in Thailand. The staff is all Thai ethnicity from what I can see. Brought my friends last night as part of the Queens Welcome package I promised when they moved to Queens.
In ranking order from best to least favorite last night would be pad thai, softshell crab (expensive : $19), pappaya salad, pork larb, mango sticky rice, fried fish, chicken curry.
The mango sticky rice couldnt hold its sticky form too well, and the mango wasn't as ripe as it should be for the dish. And the curry was a little watery and not as flavorful as I expected it to be. Overall good experience with lots of seating and friendly staff. They are still cash only so leave the plastic at home.
Phenomenal! As a person that absolutely does not like Thai, this restaurant is awesome! Came here on the recommendation of a couple of friends and could not be happier we did.
SriPraPhai Thai sits in perhaps the most unassuming corner of Woodside. You have your local barber shop, a few bodegas, an urban park, some bbq's and domino games, then–BAM amazing Thai restaurant!
When you get to the restaurant, you'll likely have to wait so grab a number. They've got a DMV type system so you'll see your number on a large lotto like board in the windows. Efficiency here is high, you probably won't be waiting long and the place is also pretty big.
SriPraPhai has an inside section and an outside section. Now that the weather is nice, I'd def recommend sitting outside. You'll walk through the inside and smell a bit of heaven. Walking through the threshold, you'll notice a wonderful water fountain. There's a fair amount of seating outside and each table has it's own (LED) overhead light above the table for when it gets dark.
The menu–it's like a Thai bible. It's has enough pages to make Game of Thrones jealous. There are plenty of house drinks and beer as well as bountiful food options.
Our table went with a number of dishes including: watercress salad, fried pork belly, drunken noodles, and a few soup dishes. They were all winners. Watercress salad is a must have. Full of flavor, it's crispy and delicious. The fried pork belly was my favorite of the selections. The drunken noodles were great and had the perfect amount of heat to them. I honestly wish I could describe the food in greater detail, but again, I don't like Thai food so this was all really a revelation.
The service was fantastic. Our server was friendly, helpful and informative about the menu, and very eager to make sure we were enjoying the food and having a good experience.
At the end of the meal, I expect–like us–you'll be blown away by how good this place is. It's not often I can give a place 5 stars, but here it is. More than worth going out of the way for.
Hands down best and most authentic Thai place in NYC. You are not going to find anything like this anywhere else around here. If you do, PLEASE personally message me and LET ME KNOW. I've been on the hunt for above average Thai food in NYC since I've moved here and this spot takes the crown, no doubt about it.
Said by many that this is the best Thai restaurant in NYC. I would agree it is definitely one of the best, considering the combination quality of food and price together. They have a thick menu (with pictures! So helpful) and I had a really difficult time making a decision. The dishes are so affordable (mostly $9 – $12) and the portion is really generous.
Eventually we got the beef massaman curry with coconut rice and the lunch special set (pick an appetizer, a soup, a main dish, and a drink!). We picked chicken and shrimp dumpling, tom yum soup, chicken pad Thai, and Thai ice tea. Sooo much food!
The massaman curry just blew my mind! Try it! Try it! Try it! The perfect stew with tender beef and flavored big chunk of potatoes. It goes perfect with the coconut rice. Both me and my date decided this is our favorite dish for the day.
Steam Dumplings were meaty and delicious. I have a thing for dumplings with thin skin and large fillings. This is exactly that! It's better than so many other Chinese dumplings and Japanese gyoza.
Tom yum soup was sour and umami. There is mushroom and shrimp with it. A nice starter to prepare your taste buds.
Chicken pad Thai was also amazing. The chicken was juicy, unlike other places the chicken easily get dry and hard to chew. I feel the noodle was more chewy than other places. But it could be my illusion since I've been looking for all the good things of this place.
The chai ice tea was just alright. Too sweet and artificial for both of us.
Definitely will come back to this place to try more stuff! They also sell snacks and desserts at the front. We were too full to try any today. The rice crackers and crispy chicken skin looks very interesting.
Awesome food that friends in Manhattan were willing to travel out for. Good high-quality food. I really liked their curry soup (forgetting the name but it's more of a northern Thai soup) and their chili lime lamb shoulder
4.5 Stars
Loud, busy restaurant on a Sunday night. Lots of seating inside, and there's an outdoor garden in the back.
The papaya salad with peanuts and dry shrimp was strongly flavored with a sweet lime juice, and a kick of spicy. It was pretty good, though not that different from other papaya salads with green papaya strips, a few skinny green beans, cherry tomatoes, peanuts, dried shrimp, red chili pepper, and garlic.
The fried shrimp cakes were tasty. The shrimp inside was soft and the breading on the outside held the whole thing together. It was dipped in a sweet honey sauce.
The gai-kua was broad, white noodles stirfried with some egg and small pieces of chicken (no soysauce). There was a some cilantro on top. This noodle dish had it's own flavor in a plainer way. Very good.
The fried trout in a spicy sauce with eggplant was the dish that spoke least to me. It was good with round, green Thai eggplant, green peppercorns, and the fried fish, but I probably wouldn't order this again.
The coconut rice was fragrant and very soft, almost to the point to where it would clump together – though it didn't.
The mango sticky rice was well…mango sticky rice. The mangos were perfectly ripe, the rice was sticky with coconut milk over it, and the crispy yellow things on top.
Very full, satisfying meal.
Hallelujah! I finally found a Thai place that's worth taking a trip to near me. My previous Thai place was all the way in New Jersey (about 2 hours away) so trekking a little less than an hour is cutting my travel time down by a significant amount.
1) This place is cash only- annoying, I know but they have an ATM so that's not too bad. There's also a chase about 3 blocks away.
2) This place became packed pretty quickly but there is a lot of seats available (+ outdoor seating as well!! Unfortunately, my boyfriend and I were starving and there was no way we were going to be able to wait until a seat opened up).
3) The menu is quite extensive so there is something for everyone. There's even a section just for vegetarians all the way in the back of the menu!
4) Perfect date night ambiance/ perfect for family gatherings/ perfect for dinner with friends. (The sound level did get pretty loud though).
5) My boyfriend and I ordered:
– Tom Yum Soup
A hot and sour soup with fresh cilantro mushrooms and shrimp.
– Coconut Rice
Very rich with coconut flavor- but not too overwhelming.
– Drunken Noodles w/ Beef
All the ingredients that contributed to this dish tarted super fresh.
– Green Chicken Curry
Yum! So rich in flavor. Definitely paired well with the coconut rice.
