Steak ‘n Shake
“BUT just for the fries & to try out different menu items, I'd much rather come here than Shake Shack.”
“The steakburger does live up to the name because it's a fat patty and its leaner, but still very juicy.”

When I want a greasy, no-funny-business kind of burger after a really bad day at work, I go down a few blocks to Steak 'n Shake to indulge. And when I mean indulge…I mean I get a double cheeseburger, an oreo shake, and a side of their charmingly wilt-y herb seasoned fries.
The hords of tourists means no harm to you–they're just trying to get their burger fix too–so just find a seat as quick as you can, and indulge away without judgement. That delicious milkshake accepts you for who you are and it doesn't judge you for messing up that statistics report.
So honestly I wanted to go to Chic Fil A but if was closed this past Sunday so I decided to come here instead. I'm from the Midwest and remember this place as a favorite shake spot.
I hate that it's in the middle of no where. Location wise it sucks. Also it's really small inside with barely any Seats. Plus they only serve popular items. Not s full shake shack menu.
I got a patty melt which comes with fries with a cookie shake on side. The patty melt does melt in your mouth. Burgers are better than five guys and also shake shack. Fries though we're greasy.
The shakes here are great. They are old fashion shakes and not that bs you find else where. Best fast food shakes!
I would come back if in area and there was no other options. Shake wise it's great.
My first time eating here is linked with the memory of the first time eating out with my now best friends.
I love the prices, the old diner vibe decor, juicy, greasy, delicious burger, their crispy thin fries in the paper cup, and amazing shakes. Try the frisco melt – not a proper burger but with the sauce and bread it's DELICIOUS.
Space is cramped so I've had to stand and eat a few times in the back area but not complaining. Also, there is a burger phone on display with their swag you can buy.
I always frequent Steak 'n Shake when I visit Florida so when I found out that there is one open in midtown I immediately had to have it.
I am so happy this establishment has finally made its way up north.
The burgers, thin crispy fries, shakes and of course the prices are not to be beat.
They also deliver.
Nothing really special about this place. The location is awful since they crammed their business into a puny office space with barely any seats. The people who eat here are pigs. They don't clean up their mess. It's self served, not waiter service, who do you think you are? I had to clean up after them just to be able to get a seat.
Burger is good, not anything that will exceed my expectations. It gets messy so have a bunch of napkins. Fries are pretty darn good too since they're made from scratch as you can tell from the potato skin still being on the fries.
Would I come here again? Most likely not. I definitely favor Shake Shack over this place. More seating, employees actually will clean up the mess of people leave behinds, unfortunately also after swines, and of course the food speaks for itself.
Not as good as the Steak n Shake in the suburbs. Menu is a lot smaller than its Midwest counterparts. Prices are also higher to account for location. You won't find the 4 under $4 here
Would be 3.5 stars…
I remember when I was at FL when I was a kid (in favor of Mickey Mouse), and went to a Steak and Shake twice for the first time. I didn't have any burgers, but I did have some of their shakes. To me, they were really tasty. I've heard about this location. So I said to myself, "Hey, I must try it out". That's what I did.
My old man and I walked in at around quarter to 12pm on a Sunday. With the exception of one patron, the restaurant looked quite empty. As we waited briefly to place out order, we saw someone in the kitchen singing a long to an un-remixed Katy Perry song in the background. That was quite funny. The music they play here is "Top-40" with a low volume in the background (doesn't quite match to what I listen to today – lol).
So after a brief wait with a chuckle, a female worker with a pleasant attitude greeted us and asked what we wanted. We both ordered the two "Original Double Cheese and Fries" with two small, MINT OREO COOKIES AND CREAM milkshakes. After our order was placed and paid, we grabbed a table with a buzzer. After a 5-7 minute wait (whatever), our order came in a huge bag.
Well, one thing's for sure, is that this chain restaurant is known for their steak-burgers. Our original double cheese steak-burgers were made up of two patties, American Cheese, ketchup, lettuce, tomato, pickles and onions. I actually ordered mine without the pickles and onions. WOW, this was really good!
The patties were juicy and packed with flavor. The included condiments made the taste even better. I really enjoyed my burger, and my old man enjoyed his too. Nothing was burnt here!
Of course, a burger meal would never be complete without fries. Do you know when you go to another burger joint, and pay a higher price for a burger that DOESN'T include fries? Well, this is NOT the case here! Any steak-burger you order here COMES with fries! Now that's a pretty GOOD value.
Speaking of the fries, the type that we received was shoestring. It was lightly salted (sea salt or any seasoning costs extra). They tasted really good. Dipping them into ketchup made the taste even better.
"Shake It Up!" – This chain restaurant is also known for their, well, SHAKES. They use HARD ICE CREAM, milk, and appropriate toppings for various shakes. Forget about the watered-down ones blended with ice cubes, because these shakes are thick and creamy. It was just as thick as the ones that I had in the regular FL location.
The Mint Oreo Cookies And Cream shake contained mint flavoring, several chopped mini pieces of Oreo cookies, and blended well together with HARD ICE CREAM. Of course this was topped off with WHIPPED CREAM and a cherry on top. Everything tasted delicious. This shake counted as my drink along with my meal, and dessert, especially due to the tasty Oreo cookie pieces on the bottom of the cup. I recommend this flavor to anyone who likes mint and Oreo cookies.
The floor here is black and white. Some parts of the walls, and the counter around the ordering and kitchen area is bright red. A yellow line was also visible in the restaurant as well. That made the whole restaurant look really good. The place looked clean too, which is a plus. Also, if shakes aren't for you, they have a Coca Cola Freestyle machine for soda.
Okay, so why the 3 stars? Well I had a hard time choosing between a 3 and a 4, but after some thinking, I decided to lower the rating. One, the menu is extremely limited (as other Yelpers have mentioned). If they make their menu just as lengthy as the one in FL, or just simply add much more variety, then that would have been fine.
2nd, the seating area is very limited. Even though I had no issue finding a spot, this could be problematic for those who want to sit down and eat during crowded periods. Lastly, the hand sensor for the paper towel dispenser in the bathroom wasn't working as nothing would dispense, and no electric hand dryer was available. So much for drying my hands properly.
This place has only one restroom. They also have an area where patrons could buy seasoning and chili. Patrons could sit at small tables or counters to dine. It's located next to the Late Show theater. Overall, this is a decent place to grab some burgers, fries, and a shake without spending an arm and a leg. I'll definitely be back one more time whenever I'm in the city for some sightseeing. Cheers!
Let's say right now that this is NOT a REAL Steak 'n Shake. It is a Signature location which means truncated version of the real thing. All the ones I've been to are real locations where they are open 24/7, you can find suitable seating, get served by wait staff & see their very good and comprehensive menu. Here all you get is jam packed seating, long wait times and a truncated menu that while good, doesn't feature some of their best stuff. The chocolate and vanilla milkshakes are on par with the experience of getting them at a real location.
But I will give them credit for having the Coke machines where you can create your own beverage. They also serve alcohol here, which you can't get at a full service Steak 'n Shake. I guess those are some small comforts to make up for the travesty of this compared to a true Steak 'n Shake experience. I'm not even sure if you can get a hamburger here with one layer of steak burger.
So if you've never been to a Steak 'n Shake in your life, you should go just to try it once even though you are not getting the real experience. However, if you're used to the real experience at a true Steak 'n Shake location or you want the experience you got in some other suburban area you'll be disappointed coming here (though the Coke machines & alcohol might cheer you up a little).
