What a charming, family-friendly, easy breakfast place!
I came here with my boyfriend and some friends for an easy, Sunday breakfast catch-up. Torn between a few things, my boyfriend and I split the Greek omelet and the Taylor Ham Breakfast sandwich (on a bagel.) Everything was delicious! As many other people note, the breakfast potatoes are delicious – somehow creamy, crispy, and steaming all at once.
The service was a bit scattered, but well-intentioned. On a busy Sunday morning, I understand the somewhat frantic service. No one's order was messed up, and the coffee was flowing!
In the realm of breakfast there's not much (some breakfast meats, waffles, pancakes, omelets, what have you). So to stand out you need to nail each item and that's exactly why S&A's stands apart from that trendy place down the road from here (which always has a line out of the door but so disappointing).
The home fries aren't that typical batch of raw bland potatoes with just the one side that's crispy and cooked… these are banging and well-seasoned.
The pancakes are crepe-style and delicious.
Your coffee cup is constantly being refilled.
That complimentary fruit cup is a nice touch to wake your mouth up.
The wife is mighty demanding when it comes to omelets and she approves of how S&A's make theirs.
The staff are all cool.
And it's always easier to get a table here than that other place on the other side of town. (In my travels I've learned the hard way – when a place has 'pancake' in their name they usually don't live up to the hype.)
Typically the service is awesome and the food is oh so good!! Usually there is a wait for the weekends which I don't mind because they are that good, but today was not the case so there is no excuse for the delay with food and service!
First we asked for brown sugar and they brought a small amount in a to go sauce cup for just 1 person so we asked more and they young guy brought the container…I said ok thanks not sure if he didn't want to be bothered with coming back or just wanted to make sure we had had enough. Took over 15 minutes to be asked what we wanted to eat…people who came in after us are eating before we did and the worst part was that the food took 40 minutes to come out and no one came to check on us. Everyone who came in after us ate and left and we were still waiting for food. I had the most simple order and had to send the eggs back.
I still give them 4 stars because they are usually on point with everything. But today was just a bad day. Hopefully this is not the case for the next time.
Have an awesome weekend!!
To start I'd like to say that the food was very good here, I had the "Denver" omelette which was just a fancy name for a western. The homefries were also good.
Now for the bad, the service was pretty bad, most of us went with empty glasses for extended periods of time, and whenever we asked for anything we got the feeling that we were bothering the servers.
The parking situation wasn't the best and I was greeted with a filthy tablecloth, see the picture. Also, I saw one of the workers moving around bread and preparing egg/chicken salad with no gloves, it was kind of disgusting.
Clean up the service, wear gloves and this would be a 4-5 star restaurant, as for me? I probably won't be back.
I ordered breakfast takeout from Steve & Andrea's the other day since there are hardly any breakfast places that deliver by me, one of the places is in Newark like 30 min away…
I ordered egg whites with home fries, french toast, a Venetian Omelette with home fries, and a side of turkey sausage since they don't have turkey bacon.
The staff were really friendly, the food was ready when I arrived for pickup, and they got my order right!
I may have had too high of expectations because I read so many reviews about their home fries being the best ever, and their french toast being amazing. I really wasn't blown away by either. I also felt that the ingredients in the Venetian Omelette were right (Spinach, Baby Arugula, Tomato, Fresh Basil & Fresh Mozzarella Cheese), but that it came off a little bland somehow, like the basil wasn't basilly enough…? You know what I mean?..they were there, but I couldn't really taste them. Maybe my taste buds died from the excessive partying I'd been doing, so it could be my bad.
I would like to come back and try the pancake/crepes. They look interesting. And a sandwich or 2, and update.
The food is fine here – standard NJ diner food that hits the spot but isn't necessarily memorable. Service was lacking on a recent trip. Apparently the seating is seat yourself, although my friends and I didn't know this until we waited 15 minutes and finally noticed that the other people waiting grabbed up seats on their own. We also waited a long time to order. My Mexican omelette with avocado, tomato, cheese, black beans and onions was filling and comparable to similar diner omelettes I've had in the area. All of my friends had egg dishes, but I noticed other customers eating the crepe-like pancakes which looked interesting.
I was really excited to try this place with my cousin for a weekend brunch.
My cousin ordered the Mexican omelette and I ordered the banana pancakes and homefries to share. Our food took FOREVER to come, but I guess that made sense considering how many people they had to serve, but it seemed like people who got there after us were getting served before us. In terms of the food, the banana pancakes were great but pretty average and the homefries were delicious but a little too oily.
Overall, it was a nice restaurant, but I think the place is a bit overhyped, but I would definitely come back here if the wait isn't too long!
This restaurant definitely has the vibe of a "I came here when I was a little kid" feeling. Probably one of the better breakfast places I've tried in North Jersey.
I got the Taylor, Egg, and Cheese sandwich: pretty bangin'. Very good balance of flavors all around, and I just love how each time I knife into my sandwich, the yolk from the egg just oozes out. This ooze definitely tells you whether the overall sandwich will be good or not!
Of course after reading Yelp reviews prior to coming here, I HAD to get the chocolate chip pancakes. I'm not that big of a pancake person, but I totally understand why people were raving over these pancakes. They definitely hit the spot for you at breakfast time. Get it if you have a sweet tooth and a savory tooth at the same time!
Only one gripe: this place should get more parking. Mind you, this is a good problem to have: this means the business is growing!
