  1. There's a reason why this place is packed, especially on weekends.

    This place is actually pretty tucked away if you're not actively looking for it.  Given the unassuming exterior of Stiles, it relatively easy for most people to miss.  Even once inside, it's actually a pretty small joint – but it's packed with plenty of produce at very reasonable prices.  For example, earlier in the day I bought a head of cabbage of more than two bucks at a grocery store – only to find after I came over hear that they sold the same thing for $0.49/lb.  Talk about a big difference.

    That's just one example of the good prices you'll find here.  They may not have a huge variety of items but what they sell is very cheap (especially for Hell's Kitchen) and I've never had any issues with their products in terms of freshness or quality.

    As I mentioned, plenty of people in the area know about it so don't be surprised if you have a less-than-comfortable shopping experience on the weekends (or after work).  But for the prices that you pay, it's definitely worth coming here if you're looking for everyday fruit and produce items.

    They don't sell any meat here but I still think Stiles is a great place to buy items to augment your grocery purchases from elsewhere.

  2. My go-to farmer's market for most of our produce- pretty much as close as you can get to Chinatown prices!

    What I always get that's worth the price:
    * Eggs
    * Bagels and Portuguese bread (better to get this early in the mornings, they tend to run out by mid-day)
    * Coffee beans
    * Apples
    * Bananas
    * Sun-dried tomatoes
    * Green beans
    * Beets
    * Spinach
    * Mushrooms
    * Corn

    Items recommended getting at the side-cart on 53rd and 8th versus Stiles:
    * Broccoli (for some reason it's super $$$ at Stiles)
    * Berries
    * Asparagus

    Items recommended in Chinatown versus Stiles:
    * Garlic
    * Bok Choy
    * Spring onions
    * All other leafy Chinese veggies that Stiles unfortunately does not offer

  3. No frills. real deals.

    Not only do they have farm fresh veggies and fruits, they also offer Italian cookies, pastas, olive oil and the like! New Yorkers rejoice!

  4. It was an interesting not fancy but cost effective produce market. We got veggies, fruit and eggs for week. I'd go again if I lived closer. If your hotel is close by stop and get fruit!

  5. So this place is kind of shady and has no air condition and is full of flies… you'll feel like you're at a legit supermarket right in the middle of Midtown Manhattan.  Kind of weird, but I'm not complaining!

    Like most others here, I got a bunch of produce for way cheaper than at any Morton Williams, Gristedes, Whole Foods, or even Trader Joes.  I'm guessing the supply here varies – this time, I got beets, cabbage, carrots, a giant quarter of a watermelon, all for around $7.  That lasted me all week!  They've got all your basic vegetables and fruits.  If you're looking for any Chinese greens, the only thing here you will find is baby bok choy.

    I will definitely be hitting this market on my way home from work on a weekly basis now.

  6. I used to live in Hell's kitchen and LOVED coming here! Good fresh produce for great prices, can't really find those prices anywhere else in Midtown.  The one drawback is they close at 6:30, so if you have a normal job, it can be hard to make it there before closing.  Now that I find myself actually living further away, I find myself coming here more!!

    If I know exactly what I want, leave work right at 6 and I get there at 6:20, I can usually get what I need and get out be 6:30.

    Staff is always super nice, I've never gotten kicked out or felt rushed, but when I get in right before they close, I try not to take my time too much to be respectful as obviously they want to get off work and get home as well!

    This is a relatively small location, there are essentially two aisles, so 4 rows of produce.  In the front they have eggs, juice, fresh bagels and bread.

    The other pro is they take credit cards!

    I've only had good experiences when coming here.  Definitely have and will continue to recommend to others and will be coming back!

  7. My cousin had told me to stop in here as she used to come here almost daily for fruits & veggies – if she hadn't told me where it was I probably would never have found it on my own (or if I did, not ventured in). It's set up in a parking lot, but don't be intimidated by the looks of the outside, it's great inside!

    They take credit cards with a $7 min, not too shabby but there is an ATM outside as well. All the produce looks very fresh and I've never had an issue with it being bad or going bad quickly, though I do tend to shop for things and cook them very soon after when I get them from here. It's not as beautiful or clean as whole foods, but for this price…who cares? TOTALLY worth the stop!! Sometimes I do wish they had a better fruit selection, but beggars can't be choosers, this place is fab and has a huuuuuuge selection. Love getting produce here and you won't find it cheaper.

  8. I live one block away and I truly feel lucky that this fine establishment is in such close proximity. They have all the vegetable and fruit essentials as well as fresh baked breads & bagels, coffee beans, cooking spices, eggs, and pasta items. The most important aspect of this place is that all the produce is fresh and the cost is cheap, especially when compared to NYC prices. I definitely recommend shopping at this place if you are in the area and need to stock up on fruits and vegetables.

    Tips:
    -They take credit card for purchases of $5 dollars or more.
    -This place gets busy weekdays around 5:30 when everyone goes right after work. If you can get there earlier during the day you'll be good.
