Great supermarket with nice weekly sales. Ice cream is on sale every single week! There's always a deal on orange juice, 2 for $5, sometimes 2 for $6. Cereal, beverages, you name it, there's always something good on sale here. I buy their store brand flavored sparkling water. It's dirt cheap and friggin delicious! They did some major renovations to the supermarket over the summer and it looks great! They have a larger and wider beer section now. This is literally my most favorite supermarket in my area. If I wanna shop cheaper than stop and shop, I goto Western Beef!
Not being a fan of the super mega Marts of any product, minus a great wine shop, I'm split on how my shopping experience translates into a fair grade for double S.
There's no way I can dismiss the cleanliness, variety, convenience, hours of operation and sales specials.
That being said, produce of the non-organic persuasion is oddly unique in comparison to produce in single store operations like those in Middle Village to cite a quick example. Vegetables and fruit alike look picturesque sitting in their display bins, but once at home sitting on my cutting board, all my hopes of flavor bursting from inside the peel become dashed with one single downward stroke of my knife's blade. It's as if some of the produce was cross breed with cotton, I occasionally catch myself observing the object of my lunches intentions quizzically, wondering what's lurking beneath the outer casing, probably more than I should.
Meat has spiked recently in price across the board regarding most every meat type, but lately supermarket meat is a tremendous disappointment and my concerns grow with every passing day. This feeling leads me to return to my local butcher shop for my carnivore needs, much like my Middle Village example speaks to. Yes he's a bit pricey and has the occasional finger on the scale, even though he lives on my block, but I feel better in the long run, there's shopping through consumption piece of mind.
Great food products fresh veggies and meats. The prices are high and the worst part is every time I come it 2 folks in the register…come on…thank good for self-service.
I wrote a review on there Westbury location, but wanted to review this one separately because this is my local, "go to" supermarket.
Its in a complex, they have pizza, (pizza place is delish, check out my review for pizza classica), liquor, ac moore, chase, petland and a fashion bug. Nice size complex, gets busy but worse case scenario you have to park on the 2nd floor, which is not the worst thing in the world since there's an elevator up there. Parking garage no charge. Plenty of shopping carts, inside and outside. Entrance to supermarket is like on the underground level, so they have a ramp or an elevator to get you down there. Place is a nice size. They recently did some restructuring of the departments and where the items where located. ALL of us where walking around pretty confused, but I'm sure it was for good reason.
customer service is good. they are helpful. they have the deli kiosk where you punch in your order, get a # and go shopping while they get your order ready….LOVE THAT!
Meat selection is good, they have a wonderful cheese dept with every cheese you could think of, I really like this about stop and shop. Well stocked produce department.
Bakery could be better, it kind of small and by the time I get there things are finished (or maybe they just don't ever have them, like the rainbow cookies and the cheese bagels) that's a little annoying. I will say that when I do get bread, muffins or cookies….they are always fresh! Bakery also has a section of "day old" baked goods that are reduced, its by the registers. I've found really good focaccia and garlic bread from here and its normally good for a few more days, I have even froze it and then popped it in the oven….works really well, got that tip from the food network!
What I don't like is the self check out! Its really a pain in the rear end! Its weird, there's no belt, there's a bag holder and they want you to put your item directly in the bag once you scan it, so they can weight it type thing. This causes a bit of a problem, you can only put so many things in one bag and when you move the bag the register get kind of confused. there is an employee running around helping everyone, but this cause it to take longer, and the employee is annoyed most of the time. At the other location we go to, they have a belt which make it so much fast, scan, throw it on the belt, and you can just keep zipping the items down the belt.
wish they would work on the self check out area, as the lines are generally really long.
Edam cheese, poffertjes and bitterballen are some of my favorite Dutch foods. Peter Stuyvesant, of Dutch origin, is no stranger to these parts. Add Stop & Shop to the mix and you're ready to truly go Dutch.
What? There's a connection between this Northeast USA supermarket chain and Holland? Indeed, Stop and Shop has been a wholly owned subsidiary of the Dutch company Ahold since 1995.
Alas, you won't find Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet here but you will find in all likelihood the largest, cleanest and most well stocked supermarket in the immediate Forest Hills/Glendale area. It's a space that is truly worthy of the word supermarket, unlike the pretenders on Queens Boulevard.
My only criticism to date is the unorthodox and somewhat confusing point of entry. Last summer I tried coming here and simply gave up because I had no idea where the actual entry is to Stop and Shop. Sure, you'll drive into the parking garage area, maybe even go up a level or two. My summer expedition was thwarted by impatience but on a recent day off I returned.
And suffered from the same confusion. I finally parked, walked around by Pizza Classico and some other shops before breaking down and asking for directions. "Excuse me, where's the stop and shop?" The white-haired woman motioned to the opposite side of the grounds and I thanked her.
Walking to the other side, I was still stymied. I didn't see any sliding doors or clearly marked entries. At long last I saw a grocery carriage emerge and climb up a ramp. A-ha! So that's how you enter…
Or take an elevator. I guess the space constraints of this shopping center made for the creative entry way. Either way, you can walk down a handicapped accessible ramp or take an elevator and be brought to a gem of a store.
Even on a Monday afternoon the place was crowded, however so be warned. As the only real supermarket in the immediate area, the aisles can be packed. A standard layout of produce, butcher shop, fish monger and more make up the store.
If I wasn't a regular (and sometimes Yelp duke) of the Waldbaum's in Bay Terrace I'd likely be more of a regular here. And it's through no fault of the store's interior but rather the exterior. It's not the easiest parking complex to navigate through, feels rather cramped and can easily descend into beeping barbarism. If you want to stay in the hood this is the best of the supermarkets; if you don't mind traveling further east you can have an easier time of the chore of grocery shopping.
we've started coming here for food shopping as suffering through LIE traffic on summer Sundays is a pain (and thus minimizing our trips to the Bayside Waldbaums). overall, I'm a fan.
it's huge and clean, with double-wide aisles big enough to make U-turns in. prices are reasonable with plenty of store-brand options in almost every aisle. great selections in meats, and an absurd amount of cheese.
there's even a dedicated aisle for allergen-free, soy-free, gluten-free, organic, lactose-free, blah blah blah health buzzwords of the week.
there's a Starbucks here too? yes, indeed.
when they're working – sometimes the system is down – there's the price scanners which you use to scan your items as you place them in the cart, then simply check out and bag at the end. I haven't tried, as both times they've been down at this S&S, but I've tried it at other locations and it can save a little time.
the dead end lane when you drive here coming from Union Turnpike (westbound) always gets me. don't take that immediate right, but go just beyond it.
plenty of parking, and with the vast majority of it inside that's a bonus during inclement weather. in contrast, in Bayside there's only a few spots in a building that you still need to exit to go shopping. parking is free, thankfully.
This is a really large and clean Stop & Shop! Make sure to avoid the chaos of the parking lot by going to the upper level where there is an elevator to the store and plenty of places to park your car without a problem. The deli and bakery section is the best around plus their prices are really great. It looks like the staff at this store knows what they are doing!
Definitely like this location, but further than other Stop/Shops, so only come here on occasion.
For one thing — they have a Starbucks! Hot day buying groceries , this would be a convenient and tasty treat.
Elevators to go up and down to the parking, I assume. A bit of a winding walk to the lot otherwise. I walked up the ramp and pushing my groceries, not gonna lie, got a little winded there.
It's smaller than Grand Avenue one, and don't have as big a stock, as in less of each product. They have everything, just much smaller quantity.
Some produce is fresher (organic cauliflower), some is not as fresh (organic apples and lacking the variety), couldn't find regular mangoes and the mangoes that were there had a lot of brown spots on the skin. Their health section was pretty good, but they didn't have smooth organic peanut butter, just the crunchy, and that's what I was looking for.
A fairly large alcohol section, or maybe it was mixed with other items.
Plenty of self-checkout lanes and the fact that they had about 4 (or more?) of "less than 12 items" self-checkout was appreciated. The one on Grand Avenue, it sucks waiting behind someone who has literally 88 items and they take about two hours because self-checkout usually has more issues or they get significantly more confused without someone to talk them through everything. Then they also have regular self checkout lanes (2-3), one was out of order though. An attendant was there, and stayed there. I hate when the attendant wanders off and you have to chase someone down when there is a problem.
Smaller store, aisles not as wide, produce section not as large, although the bakery looked pretty damn good. General space between aisles and the register lines is smaller, so if lines start to form, there is no way you are going to be able to pass.
Parking is in a garage/deck, shared with other businesses. I like this because on super hot days you have shade and your car isn't a sauna by the time you come back to it.
***Stop and Shop in general is not the cheapest chain, so be aware of this before you shop. Go to their website and look at the online ad.
