I have such a bad habit of not updating my reviews, but Strong Place has a… strong place in my heart, so I'll give them the honor.
Of course, they still have a wonderful beer list. They still have a great backyard (can't wait for summer!).
But I've since come back a few times and tried the food, and it's also great. The lamb burger with feta was one of my favorite burgers. The rosemary fries are the best.
They also have duck fat edamame. Let me repeat that – duck. fat. edamame.
I've also had their Allagash steamed Littleneck clams, which are pretty good. Broth could've been a little heavier though.
Their fried oysters, on the other hand, were perfect.
Bottom line – Strong Place is a great neighborhood bar and a favorite dinner spot.
Grabbed brunch with some friends here this past weekend. No wait (at 1:30pm on a Sunday). Super nice waitress. Good food. Good coffee. I'm a fan!
I always feel Strong after leaving this place! or is it crazy buzzed….yea. That's more like it, totally buzzed after awesome happy hour. I can't get enough of Strong Place because it hits the nail on some key fun factors for me. The servers have always been above and beyond friendly. The outside back patio is great to meet with friends and enjoy the nice weather. The $1 oysters are always on point. The buy one get one free beers is also unheard of in this neighborhood. I can't think of anything really negative! They do have a new expanded wrap/salad/grilled cheese/sandwich menu so if you haven't gone in a while, time to mosey on over to Strong Place. PS I used to always walk past it because they don't have a very clear sign.
3.5 stars…
Strong Place is pretty beautiful, I'm surprised it's taken me 5 years living down the street to check the place out. The backyard looked great but it was closed for the season. The beer list here is constantly changing and includes some interesting options at reasonable prices ($6-7 mostly). Food prices are a tad steep and limited but nothing unreasonable. I got the bolognese for $10. I should have read closer or inquired as I assumed this would be over pasta. What I got was just a small dish with a meat sauce, a dollop of ricotta, and a few pieces of toasted bread. I'm surprised it wasn't listed as an appetizer as that's really what it was. Everyone at my table ordered the lamb burger with feta ($16) which I tasted and it was great. The rosemary fries were very good despite having a tad too much salt and not too much rosemary. Overall the place as a-ok but nothing worth rushing back to.
Strong place is a great time for all those occasions you find yourself going to the bar.
With a date, hanging out with your friends or when you take your mother out for Mother's Day and the movie doesn't start for another hour so you take her to get some beers across the street! You know the normal times you go to bar.
If the name suggests anything about the beers, it's correct. This place has not only one of the most extensive selection of beers on tap, or one of the most changing selection of beers, it has one of the most unique selection of beers on tap.
Tons of great beers from all around, with high ABVs. This place is great! The food was good the one time I ate here. I do find myself here though really for the beer.
They have a wonderful design. The front bar is beautiful, the physical taps themselves are well made. They have clothespins hanging up the names of the beers above the taps, giving it a nice little niche. They have a huge meat locker type door for the bathroom, which is fun. The outside is nice looking, though you might want to bring bug repellant. They have televisions by the bar if a game is on.
In the end, it's a great bar for a happy hour or catching some beers before dinner. You should check it out!
Great spot for a beer and a bite, before or after a movie! Great list of draft and bottles of beers, and insanely delicious snacks! This time I shared a warm corn bread with lemony butter and it was WOW!
Definitely I'll come back!
I had been here a handful of other times for their beer selection which I have always enjoyed so we decided to try it for dinner and we are very glad we did. We started with an order of chick peas with sea salt and vinegar that we toasted and very tasty. I ordered the salmon with teriyaki and lemon which was fantastic. My girlfriend got the cauliflower soup and brussels sprout salad which both were also excellent. With great wine and service I loved the dining experience and look forward to returning when back in Carroll Gardens.
Nice spot in the neighborhood. 3.5 stars, but I'm rounding up to be generous.
We missed out on the oyster happy hour that makes this place so popular, but decided to get some oysters anyway to start our meal. Ordered a half dozen and 4 raw clams. They were fresh and tasty. Not the biggest fan of the raw clams, but I'm glad I got to try those out.
For dinner, we shared the bone marrow croquettes with short rib, duck penne carbonara, and the lamb burger. The croquettes had a nice presentation of being served with a marrow bone. They were good, but not as flavorful or rich as I thought they would be. The duck penne carbonara was extremely…ducky. Very strong duck flavor, although surprisingly lacking in salt. The sauce was creamy but I didn't get the tang of goat cheese that I was expecting. Still, it was a very solid dish. The lamb burger was thick and very well-seasoned. It could have been amazing, but was only just very good because unfortunately it was overcooked. I think I asked for it medium, it was past medium well. Still, you could taste the potential. The fries were good but a little on the salty side.
Despite its mishaps, this place has a very good vibe and I'd like to try the lamb burger again (maybe next time ask for it medium rare so they'll overcook it to medium?).
