Suma Sushi

“Even the delivery man was nice, and personally complimented me on my apartment's wall colors lol.”

“I would give this business 5/5 if it weren't for the fact that it's still just run-of-the-mill sushi; however, you're not going to find Japan's best in Morningside Heights.”

“A place that I can drag my parents to when they visit that doesn't involve me walking more than five minutes away from my apartment!”

  1. I ordered delivery from here twice and after that came to the conclusion that it just isn't that good, or just not what I prefer.  However the sushi is decent and for the price it isn't that bad.  In the end, if you're looking for a cheaper sushi option then this might be a good choice for you.  They are also quick with delivery and have never gotten my order wrong.

On the other hand, if you're the kind of person who is picky about their sushi rice, seaweed, fish grade, etc then this place is not going to do it for you.

  2. Unremarkable and easily forgettable.

They do get the extra star for accommodating our party of six the same day as Columbia University's graduation – I swear the street was full of people in light blue robes all looking for places to go eat with their families afterwards!

  3. I have been a fan of Suma for over a year now and they are consistently awesome. They are super polite over the phone and their POS (whatever they use) makes my interaction with them super efficient and f a s   t ! The food always arrives ridiculously record time (about 10 blocks via a scooter) and the fish is still cold and rice still warm – perfect.

The lunch specials are always a hit for me; always getting either the two roll combo or chirashi. It's so refreshing to find a good place in M-side Heights for sushi besides the usual Columbia-town tourist traps.

  4. FINALLY! A place that I can drag my parents to when they visit that doesn't involve me walking more than five minutes away from my apartment!

The restaurant itself is quaint, bright, clean, and interestingly decorated, with liquor bottles lining shelves and walls full of photos from around Manhattan.

I partook in miso soup, avocado rolls, tamago, and Tempura Ice Cream (made with green tea ice cream). The miso soup was good (…though it's hard to really screw up miso soup…or improve upon it, for that matter…), the tamago was tasty too, but the avocado rolls? LIKE BUTTAH. I can't remember the last time I had a better plate of them! So creamy and flavorful! The Tempura Ice Cream (fried ice cream, yes) was delightful. The green tea ice cream they use isn't as bitter or biting as some kinds I've tried, and the chocolate sauce, whipped cream, and cherry on top? One lovely $5 dessert. Well worth it.

Some people may not enjoy their playlist of Ciara, Usher, and Mariah Carey, but I enjoy any restaurant that allows me to sing along to long-forgotten 90s pop and R & B favorites! I left the restaurant singing, "And then a herooooo comes alooooong…", and I was NOT complaining. 😉

  5. Meh.  Don't love that they put lettuce leaves in their sushi. Chicken teriaki has a light sauce and isn't the tastiest. Still waiting for something to best sura.

  6. I tried the Alaska roll, spicy tuna roll, spicy orange roll, and broadway roll. The rolls seemed fresh enough, and I enjoyed the Alaska roll. However the rolls that involved spicy tuna and spicy salmon were way too mushy. They are definitely made with too much mayo. I probably would not go back.

  7. When it comes to ingesting raw fish and other questionable ingredients, you had better investigate the place that is producing such items first before you do so. Taking my own advice, I ordered from Suma after I'd read the Yelp reviews thoroughly.

And my investigation yielded (mostly) accurate results. Yes, the sushi is decent, and yes, they do deliver. However, had it not been for the wasabi that came with my Spider Rolls (no, not spider…deep fried crab, cucumber, lettuce, and avocado), then I would've been a little disappointed. But it was definitely fresh, I'll give them that. And $9 for 5 rolls isn't TOO bad, but a lot of their other items are higher priced.

However, the delivery time was not what I expected it to be given the fact that I live a grand total of two blocks away. Maybe it was the snow storm? A lot of other reviews have mentioned how much they like this place in the absence of any other real alternative, and while I'd agree that this probably one of the only places in the area that you can get decent sushi, I don't normally award more stars for a "oh, you didn't suck as badly as I thought you were going to" award.

On days like today where I barricaded myself indoors? I'd order from Suma again. But when the summertime hits? I'll walk the 10 blocks down to Whole Foods and buy their sushi instead.

  8. Suma has something of a hole-in-the-wall vibe.  Lured into larger places on Broadway, I walked by it for about three years before trying it, and once I did, I realized how much I was missing out on.  The California rolls are among the best I've tried in New York, and the basic salad provides much more vegetables and a better ginger dressing than many other places.  The miso soup is also very well done. As others have mentioned, the bento box is probably the best deal, and delivery is super-fast.  The restuarant also provides a quiet and cozy space for dining in.
