We had a weird experience at Suprema. The place looks so cozy, warm and artisanal and has great reviews so we decided to give it a try. Our server was atrocious! Service was very slow. We had to keep asking for water because we wouldn't get anyone to check on our table. The food is good but sizes are pretty small for the price. Wines are great. Give it 3 stars mainly because the service was so bad and my party was very anxious, hungry and not pleased at all. It probably was a one time deal but enough to never come again.
We dropped in for our Happy Hour without knowing it was the bar's Happy Hour (2 for 1, 5-6 PM). The GF hit up a dark rose ("Good, it was spritzy") and I had the Manhattan, made with craftiness by Anthony's trainee. The Manhattan ($14) was especially good because it was dry and flavorful made with rye whiskey and a blend of four vermouths; one of which was Campari, one of my favorites. We plan to go back for dinner sometime. The meats and cheeses boards are the thing to go their for, according to the GF, after she read through the menu.
TIP – convenient location
BONUS – spacious, attractive restaurant
SHOUT OUT – Anthony rocks the bar!
BONUS – good value at happy hour
i'm torn. indifferent.
i wanted to love this place but instead, i think i left underwhelmed. and in even all of my analyzing and over-analyzing, i can't quite put my finger on why.
my boyfriend and i were wandering around the village before meeting a friend at SoHo Grand. we were hungry and thirsty (always thirsty!) – while we initially stopped in to suprema and then walked out (because we're indecisive sometimes), we eventually decided on suprema.
we sat at the bar and the bartender was very attentive! great service. and we took his recommendations re: food. we ordered the caesar salad ($12) and the meatballs ($18).
while the salad was a good size, it was lacking the flavor i expected. i guess caesar salads can be hit or miss. this was more of a miss, primarily because i have had better.
however, the meatballs were BOMB. i was so nervous, too, because my boyfriend is italian and quite frugal, so when just two meatballs (for $18, mind you) were placed before us, i was bracing myself . . . haha. my boyfriend went straight for the kill – the red sauce (gravy) – and it was a hit! he loved it. and the meatballs were superb and much more filling than we expected! thumbs up.
as for beverages, we both had a la chouffe (one of my favorite beers) and then i had a dirty vodka martini while he had a negroni. both of our cocktails were delicious, though my olives had a weird texture. meh. minor detail, i suppose?
long story short, this wasn't my most pleasant bar/restaurant experience, but i think i would come back to split a bottle of wine at the bar. would probably skip the food next time . . .
I'm pretty sure this is a new business.
It's local to me so I wanted to like it, and I did.
Small plates / tapas is their angle, along with a shop (Bleeker St entrance) and a decent sized bar.
The food was pretty pretty good, service was friendly and knowledgeable.
Misses out on fifth star from me as was still a bit new (lack of menu's), confusion when we first arrived as who was seating us etc, nothing I'm sure they won't iron out as they get into their stride and I'll be back and happily upgrade my review if the rest of the menu was as good as what we tried.
Deserves to succeed.
