My father was in town and I was in a bit of a bind because I needed to find somewhere quick, within walking distance to the Waldorf, and "healthy". Enter Sushi-Ann.
If you have been to other Midtown sushi joints such as Hatsuhana and Sushiden, then this is pretty much VERY comparable. Similar price point (~$30-50 a head), and good quality but not mind-blowing sushi. I'm a fan of these places because you don't feel pressured to eat at the bar and order omakase, and you can pretty much get a reservation day of without any problems.
We all opted for the set dinner which came with a generous portion of salad, miso soup, choice of two (or maybe three?) rolls, choice between grilled cod or salmon, and dessert. All for around $40. The fatty tuna roll was especially delicious and I would definitely get the cod over salmon. Dessert was your standard green tea ice cream but no complaints there because I love green tea ice cream.
Service was attentive and food came quickly. Solid spot in Midtown East and while its not my top pick for Japanese, I would recommend it if you're looking for a solid sushi spot with short notice.
The prix fixe dinner of black cod and salad, miso soup, two rolls and ice cream for $42 was okay. My dinner mate also ordered the grilled black cod and his portion was twice as big. I had the spicy tuna roll and fatty tuna roll also. They were indistinguishable. The decor was nothing impressive. Even though it was not crowded on a Wednesday night, the waiter seemed to rush us out by clearing our dishes even though one diner was still eating. A bit rude. Nothing impressive here
I finally sat at the counter and had an AMAZING experience. The chef (Sakai) was knowledgeable. funny, and created some of the best sushi/sashimi experiences I've ever had. I highly recommend plopping down at the counter and leaving yourself in the sushi chef's hands, whoever they are.
My previous reviews were for business lunches where I had to get in-and-out in 60 minutes and was focused on a client. I just had the pleasure of going to Sushi-Ann with a friend where we had more than an hour free. I realized just how delicious the sushi is in Sushi-Ann. We savored each individual piece that was put in front of us.
As always, Sushi-Ann has excellent, courteous service. Everyone is very attentive and they do remember people who come. Even though I come once every 2-3 months, they still recognize me…which is kind of nice 🙂
We snuck in here Friday at 12:15 for lunch and were able to get a table for 3! What the other reviews have said is true.. Its definitely a business lunch place.. There were people in suits everywhere. The atmosphere was a little bit sterile, but reasonable for a traditional Japanese sushi place. There were 8 sushi chefs on duty at the time, and the place was bustling the whole time we were there.
I got the omakase for lunch and it had excellent variety and flavor. The fish was all very fresh and the portion size very reasonable. The rice was on the softer side and had an excellent taste and consistency. The omakase comes with fresh ground wasabi, while most other dishes come with the normal paste wasabi (which of course has a little more kick).
This place hit my fix for fresh and high quality sushi during this last trip in New York. My only qualm about the place is that the service is a bit slow. We were seated at a table (which of course isn't the best way to go omakase), and we ended up waiting a good while before the sushi came out.. and when it did come out, it was all out..
The place was a little pricy, but definitely within reason. This place is up there on my list for expensive sushi.
I went to this overhyped an overcrowded restaurant on a business lunch. We had an omakase sushi and I have to say that this was extremely average sushi. The rice was just a bit mushy and definitely not the type of quality that I would expect to have an establishment the charges these kinds of prices. Furthermore the sushi itself was just okay there's nothing truly exceptional about any of it. The Toro was extremely disappointing and there was a number of pieces that were very fishy. Furthermore at $200 it was not a good value. I would avoid this place and go to other places.
Went here for a work lunch with a colleague. We made a reservation for 12:45, which was smart since Sushi-Ann was packed! We ordered edamame, black cod, a salad for him, clam miso soup for me and we both got the sushi and sashimi combination. The clam miso soup sounded intriguing, but it wasn't really superior in flavor to normal miso soup. The edamame was fresh and lightly salted, just the way I like it. The black cod, however, was definitely the highlight of the meal. It was delicious and super fresh with some lightly pan fried skin still attached. I couldn't get enough of it! The sushi and sashimi combo was good, but didn't blow me away for $34. The service is great here though. They keep refilling your tea and know how to perfectly time the different dishes. This place is so far out of my price range though that I won't be coming back here on my own budget.
Came here for dinner on a Sat night, we were seated right away and the staff are super friendly and attentive. We tried their Sushi and Sashimi combo and everything tasted great! I'm not a big sushi/sashimi eater and am i'm not a picky eater in general (but I can tell what taste good and what doesn't), this place was great! It was actually a lot of food for 2 ppl…
Sushi was good, service was great, prices are HIGH ($75 lunch for 2, yikes!). I would understand if there was something spectacular about this place but in my opinion, there is not. If you're wearing a suit, you'll fit right in. Sushi Ann caters to the work crowd. Great spot to have a biz meeting. Once the lunch rush clears out, its empty. Not sure about dinner. The A/C was blasting and this was unpleasant on a chilly, rainy day. The bathroom was not the best one I have seen. It was OK. I'm not thrilled.
