Difficult to locate if you're not looking for it, Sushi Ichimasa is a great find!
High in quality, the sushi here is both fresh and well prepared. But keep in mind that there is a $15 minimum per person, so your appetite had best be big!
mom and pop sushi joint. mostly japanese clients. still open 11pm on a monday for after-theater nosh. in a (french) word…Bof.
A hidden gem with great sushi.
A friend had recommended this place as she frequents a lot. The place is pretty small and does have a homey feel. I was the only customer at the time and sat the the sushi bar. I order a variety of sashimi: salmon, bluefin tuna, toro, yellowtail, amber yellowtail and some hot tea and water.
The chefs started on my order in front of me. When it came, the sashimi looked so fresh and vibrant in color. No fishy smell like bad sushi places. The pieces were a decent size and buttery when I bit into it, tasty. My favorite of the 5 was the amber. Mm.
Hankering for a bit more, I got the spicy tuna handroll. It was definitely filled with lots of rice, but the tuna was smothered in this spicy (yes, actually spicy) sauce. Stuffed after this.
fish is fresh and tasty. prices are a bit high but you get quality with what you pay for. Service is alright. Its not speedy like most places, but the homeyness is just what you need sometimes. It was interesting to watch the lady running the place hold and play with some other customer's baby so they could eat. She was having a blast with the baby.
I'll be back again the next time I'm in town for sure.
Not worth the money. Was appalled by the cost of the food given the mediocre quality. The fish dishes did not taste fresh and the rice was underwhelming.
Perhaps not the worst sushi experience I ever had but close to it. The fish wasn't very cold and took a long time to come out. Service was practically non existent. Diet Coke was $3 and was completely watery and flat. We paid $30 (before tip) for a lunch worth $15 tops. There are is way better quality sushi with lower priced lunch specials in midtown!
Ichimasa is definitely not some large-chain Japanese restaurant you should order 'tourist Japanese' food. You need to order only certain foods from these 'mom' and 'pop' places. It's not a place that you go to when you say "I want sushi!."
Go to Ichiumi or Todai for that if you like 'tourist-Japanese.'
That being said, orders included
Soba buckwheat noodles w/ tempura: Oh, my fave and they prepare it just right (in terms of the sauce to accompany it) and the noodles are of a firm texture and so fresh
Udon: I loved the broth to accompany this, perfect blend of sweet/salty, which I have a penchant for.
Appetizer: crispy fried chicken w/ a fresh lemon, fresh but a bit chewy
Next time I go back, I want to order the agaeshi, er, fried tofu which comes with soy sauce, the fish sauce tasting type!
The woman who owns this place feels like your own mother and it's relaxing to eat here on a cold wintry day sipping hot broth in a quiet small restaurant. 🙂
My friend and I were looking for a place to eat last night because I craved sushi and we ended up at Ichimasa. Upon walking in, we discovered that it was a tiny restaurants with maybe 15 seats total. We took a seat a the bar and after looking around, I found that the restaurant gave a very cosy feel. The place reminded me of those tiny little family-owned and run restaurants in Japan. It was really cute.
We ordered an omakase and a sushi-sashimi combo. The omakase came with 1 appetizer, 8 pieces of sushi, 1 chef's special roll, and dessert. The fish was fresh and the quantity of food wasn't too little. My main complaint was that they gave too much rice for the sushi. I was getting too full too quickly and wanted to enjoy more of our dinner.
Everything about the place was pretty mediocre, though I do give props to the tiny restaurant for serving up some fresh fish. But if you're looking to spend your money on good sushi, I'd vote for a place like Kanoyama. Economies of scale works.
Sushi with a warm and cozy feeling.
Food: 3.5 Stars
The sushi here is standard and rather basic. Many rolls revolve around the standard tuna/salmon with avocado.
I have gone here many times for their lunch specials typically ordering the sushi lunch. They always switch up what types of fish in the lunchbox. They always include salmon and tuna, but all the other pieces are always different. One week they give me crab/shrimp/eel and the next week they give me yellow-tail/red snapper/eel.
Their fish is always fresh which is a necessity at any Japanese restaurant.
Drinks: N/A
Since I have only eaten at this restaurant once for lunch, I do not know what they provide for drinks other than green tea.
Service: 5 Stars
The warm and cozy feeling comes from matron of the restaurant (whose name I do not currently recall) who greets you in a typical Japanese fashion, but instead of the forced greeting you sometimes feel from other places, this one feels genuine.
Every time I come in Sushi Ichimasa to order take-out she is always there to greet me happily and offer me a seat in the tiny tiny tiny tiny tiny tiny tiny restaurant.
After I place my order she is always there with a hot green tea and occasionally a small plate of finger food. One time I ate there she sliced some apples and gave myself and another patron waiting for their food a few slices (which is seems to have mainly been for the customers eating in the restaurant).
When I actually ate in the restaurant I didn't receive as much attention, but she was running all over the place trying to please everyone, so I couldn't blame her for that.
Ambiance: 3.5 Stars
This restaurant is remarkably small and a bit clutter with pictures and a large sushi station.
The restaurant from the outside is completely misleading since it has a few neon signs and rather misleading in terms of the entrance. The way the signs are placed it looks like the entrance is in the subway, but its actually further down the street covered with signs and papers.
Overall: 3.75 Stars
The service and atmosphere is what always draws me back to Sushi Ichimasa. There are better sushi restaurants in the area in regards to quality and price, but the warm and cozy feeling makes you feel like you are home being serves Thanksgiving dinner by your mother (maybe an extreme comparison, but I need to get my point across).
I recommend trying this place at least once especially you are are going there for lunch (dinner is pricey).
