  1. Two years ago, one of my friends who lives in NY recommended Sushi of Gari to me when I visited.  I did not get a chance to eat at any of the Gari locations on that visit.  Finally, last week I returned to NY again and got to try Gari 46!

I would recommend making a reservation as it is a small space and they are packed all evening.  Lady and I walked in around 7:30pm and were told it would be an hour wait.  We decided to go grab a glass of wine next door while we waited.  When our table was ready, the hostess gave us a call and we headed over.  We actually ended up sitting at the sushi bar since there was space.  The tables are very close to one another, so sushi bar seems more comfortable.  Besides, it's always more fun at the sushi bar.  They only let you sit at the sushi bar if you do intend on ordering sushi and not only cooked menu items.

As recommended by my friend, Tuna of Gari: tuna 8 ways ($55) is the thing to order.  Two orders – one for lady and one for myself.  Large hot house sake to share.  We watched the sushi chefs make beautiful plates of jewels (sushi).  They have fresh selections of fish and many trained chefs working the sushi bar.  Tuna of Gari did not disappoint!  Although I cannot recall exactly each type of tuna sushi, all of them were remarkable!  The spicy tuna roll was very good but not spectacular like the sushi.  The dish is filling for one person.  If you love tuna, this signature dish is a must order.  It's a little pricey, but well worth it.  Total tab was $165.

Overall, authentic high-end sushi dining experience.  Ambiance is cozy and hip with the clientele ranging from businesspeople to dating couples to girls on a night out.  Service was average.  Our server was here and there but we did have to wave him down a few times.  Sushi chefs don't really engage in conversations at the sushi bar, so don't expect to be taking shots with them.  Highly recommend if you are looking for a good sushi joint in NYC.  There are several locations and their menus vary.

  2. If I could give half stars, I would have given sushi of gari 3.5

Food: good. Didn't blow me away, but it was very good and I'd order the same rolls again. In fairness, I really didn't give them the opportunity to blow me away. I had two shrimp tempura rolls and a spicy crunchy yellowtail. The person I was there with had an eel roll, California roll and tuna. We started with the edamame.

Service: polite and attentive, but it took us asking three times to get the amount of wasabi we initially wanted.

Atmosphere: pretty typical which is fine with me. Maybe a little on the smaller side. Tables kind of close together, but it didn't feel stuffy.

Misc: I'd go back, but it would have to be a client lunch or something like that. The bill after tip was ~$90.

  3. Let me preface by saying that I'm a fairly picky sushi/sashimi eater. If given the choice, I would rather not eat sushi/sashimi when eating out with friends because so many restaurants serve such bad quality sushi/sashimi.

So what do I look for in my sushi/sashimi? Among others, these are my most important: freshness and thickness of the fish, temperature of fish served, seasoning of the rice (too sour? salty? bland?).

Sushi of Gari satisfied them all, and more.

My friend generously suggested that I try the Omasake, while he had (I believe) the Sashimi Deluxe. (He was here a week before and had tried the Omasake).

Before I ordered, the waitress asked me if I was allergic to anything. I told her I was allergic to gluten. She ended up bringing me 2 pieces, before the finale dish, that had gluten in it, but when she realized her mistake, took one of them back and traded it for something else. I don't think she realized that the other piece was called "cake" and also had gluten, but I'm not going to hold it against her.

As for the finale dish: oh my gosh. It was hard to savor the flavors because everything melted in my mouth (meaning they were all that good). And I loved, loved the innovative sashimi/topping pairings. Also, I generally dislike mackerel sashimi because mackerel that isn't as fresh gives off a strong scent that I can't stand, but the mackerel served here was absolutely phenomenal. My mom used to always tell me that you can tell how great a sashimi restaurant is by how fresh a mackerel they serve!

Yes, omasake is supposed to be served one piece at a time, but everything was just too good – I don't want to complain.

Pro tip: Don't dip your sushi in soy sauce. The rice has already been seasoned.

  4. One of the best sushi places I've been to. We can only speak to the Chef's selection of omakase, but it was by far the most creative set of sushi we have ever seen. Every piece was unique and melted in our mouths. Absolutely adored this place, from service to food, and would send anyone looking for amazing sushi to Sushi of Gari.

We also had a side of karaage which was not the greatest chicken we have ever had at a Japanese establishment, so I can't speak to the cooked food. If you're looking for sushi/sashimi, this is your place.

  5. Besides the fact that I unknowingly spent over $300 at the omakase, I had an amazing dinner here. Sushi of Gari has some of the most delicious ensembles of sushi–each one completely different from the last. All of the pieces were complex, fresh, and impressive. We made reservations for the omakase, and sat next to others at the sushi bar. As people finished their omakase and were replaced with new patrons, ours seemed to be endless. After 32 pieces of sushi each, my companion and I asked when this was supposed to end, to which they replied "two more." We then got served with a $600 bill. After experiencing many omakases in the city, I've never been to one where I've explicitly had to state when I've had enough. I noted that the other patrons around us did not have to state when they were done, and were served in the same fashion as us. I found this rather sketchy, and though our meal was delicious, their negligence in informing us of this rule left a bad taste in my mouth. The omakase was a great experience, though I would advise you to learn from my mistake and ensure they do not take advantage of your patronage like so.

  6. This place is pricy but super yum. We splurged and got their tuna of gari (over $50) but it was totally fantastic – though difficult to share all the individual sushi pieces among two people (we both wanted to try everything). We also got 3 apps, which was maybe slightly too much food (but nothing was left over!). The pumpkin tempura was lovely and flavourful, the yellowtail collar was super tender and interesting (we'd never had it like that), and the only meh thing was the seaweed salad concoction which is something I usually love but this one was a ridiculously tiny portion and not that interesting/good.

  7. Excellent service, authentic food, a bit noisy.

So I've been here twice now. Both time with reservations via OpenTable. I walked in and was greeted and seated right away, the server came within a minute and asked if it was my first time there, it was not but I asked her to refresh my memory anyway, she proceeded took the beverage request and fulfilled the request quickly. Throughout the entire experience she was very attentive. It's nice to have good service in Hell's Kitchen 🙂

The food here is authentic, note there's a separate menu for rolls etc than the main menu, if you're looking for rolls you have to ask.

For dinner we ordered from both menus.

Edamame – not salty, good, I've had better
Spicy tuna roll – excellent, the tuna is definitely the freshest I've had in HK
Salmon roll –  excellent and just as fresh as the tuna roll
Sashimi Dinner – 15 pieces of Sashimi, excellent selection (I can't remember the types included) and fresh. My friend who does not fancy Sashimi ever had some.
Green Tea Mille Crepes – tasty, well layered and melts in your mouth.

The food and service here is top notch, the only reason I did not give it 5 stars is the place is a bit loud including the staff. Personally I don't like a lot of noise when dining but maybe that's how it's suppose to be.

  8. I expected to come here and finally bringbring my hubs to the dark side of sushi.  While delicious, it's wasn't an OMG – life changer experience (minus 1 for that).  We ordered omakase at a table while our companions ordered a la carte, so the waitress brought out all of our omakase pieces at the same time. That definitely isn't the way to go: fresher is better.

I liked the different take on the sushi here though, because most of the pieces were topped with something special; egg, jalapeño, horseradish cream, etc.  or marinated.  If you're a sushi purist, this isn't for you either.

The maki rolls I tried were definitely a step above other rolls out there… I think this is where the bulk of the great reviews are stemming from… They don't inundate on the rice and the fish is able to shine through.  Even the spicy tuna (most popular roll there) was yummy.

Dress code is super casual – some people were in shorts and tees.  Kind of weird for a higher end sushi shop, especially on a Saturday night, if you ask me.

Gotta give then a minus-1 for service.  A maki mistakenly came out instead of a handroll.   A spicy scallop roll wasn't ever put in; then when we reminded the waitress (25 minutes later), she didn't really apologize and then charged us for the roll anyway.  We kept needing to ask for waters and refills on the wine bottle we purchased.
