Sushi of Gari Tribeca

“I went to the UES Sushi of Gari a few years ago, and my impressions were that the omakase had great food, although it was expensive to eat my fill.”

“Every piece of nigiri and sashimi was perfectly crafted, full of flavor, extremely tender and practically melted in my mouth.”

“Two of my favorites were the salmon with tomato and tuna with tofu sauce/chili.”

  1. It was kind of a last minute thing- a friend saved me from some-guy-hitting-on-me-with-a-terrible-pick-up-line by sending me a text, "Sushi of Gari? Got a reservation, but it's in only 10 minutes from now." Twist my arm. Club me over the head and drag me there. YES, OF COURSE I WILL RUN IN THE COLD TO MEET YOU THERE IN 10 MINUTES! If that had been the pickup line, the guy would have scored. Instead, I left in a rush to go put raw fish in my mouth.

Simple, small, unassuming, intimate. I like that. True, things got a bit tight inside, but sometimes a little tightness doesn't hurt, you know what I mean?

The omakase here was perfectly portioned- I didn't feel like the restaurant went over the top in an effort to "prove" itself, as many omakase meals seem to imply. The quail egg with yellow tail was pretty amazing, the toro was buttery smooth, and there were some pieces with jalapeno flair that really stole the show. The green tea was very nice on the cold day.

The service was a bit odd- the waiter was difficult to understand, and seemed to only address me. He also went into lengths to ensure that we actually wanted to order the omakase, as if he wasn't sure we would know what it was. I appreciated the warning, but I just felt like it was unnecessary.

    Otherwise, the experience was excellent.

  2. I am over inventive, fusion-style sushi. I like the clean, crisp, buttery taste of fresh fish not garnished with a sloppy stewed tomato, weird sauces or strong smoked flavors that overpower the delicate flavors of raw fish. I came to this realization while sitting in the "see and be seen" Tribeca outpost of Gari where it was crystal clear that it was not about the food here – but about how much you could pay for expensive, over priced sushi.
If you do happen upon Gari – Omakase is fun. You can set your price limit but may find that at a $125 price point per person, you are still hungry and opt to up the anty to another sum that feels more comfortable after two bottles of expensive saki. However heed this – if you are a purist – order a la carte or go someplace else.

  3. Came here on a postponed Valentines Date and was super excited that my boyfriend was going to have his first Omakase experience. When I saw the yelp rating, I was surprised to see it lower than the other Garis but upon arriving, I can see why. The restaurant ambiance was not as impressive as we had hoped. However, the food was still spot-on.

We sat on the first floor and did not realize there was a second floor until we left. I would try and avoid the first floor if possible as it is very closed and confined and you have no view of any sushi chefs. It kind of took away the magic.

We had a choice between a menu or the omakase but chose the omakase. Why else would you come! (actually I legitimately heard the table next to me say that they don't eat fish…wrong place to eat bro. Needless to say, he got a California Roll). We started off with some miso soup which was tasty and refreshing. Then the Omakase started, which ended being about $110 each for 12 pieces, including tuna, salmon, yellowfin, oyster, lobster, foie gras, trout and mackerel. It was great. This was my boyfriend's first try of actual good quality sushi and he could tell the difference immediately. We started off with tuna and it just literally melted in our mouth and everything just got better as we progressed. It was great. Everything was great! Each piece was accompanied with a different topping or sauce, making everything pop uniquely. The service was very attentive as well.

Overall a great experience with delicious food! Definitely worth a try.

  4. I've been here a handful of times and it's always good. Not great, but good. I love the small, unassuming room but hate that the bathroom is basically in the middle of the dining room. The omakase is the reason to go here, but everything is overpriced for what it is. I've never had an issue with rude staff or bad sushi here, but have also never left and thought "wow, I can't wait to go back." Mostly it's just been "wow, I can't believe we just spent $250 on ok sushi. Again."

  5. Dropped in without a rez with hopes of an available table and were able to be seated immediately.  Although they provide the things one expects at a sushi restaurant, it lacks character.  The raw fish was quite good, orders are taken quickly, delivered quickly – to the point that it feels rushed.

We noticed the sushi/sashimi menu is entirely in English – the words hamachi, unagi, toro, etc. are not prominent.  Who cares is a reasonable response to that but, in some way the proprietor is sending a message – never seen that anywhere else.

The main floor dining room decor is bland and the tables are tight.

This did not feel like a Japanese experience.  Would go back with expectations managed.  Was expecting more of…something.

  6. My favorite sushi place in NYC (5+ stars for the exceptional good food, 3.5 stars for the ambiance). They literally expand the dimensions of my sushi tasting experience. Those sushi plates always impress me no matter how many times I have been there.

I'm not big about ambiance, for me the food quality and state matter most. That being said,  TriBeCa location is small and simple but I still LOVE it because of the great taste of every single piece of sushi. Among all the choices, tuna platter and sushi platter deluxe are my favorites. The good variety of different mix of texture, taste and how the fish is prepared makes the whole dining experience fun and inspiring. It's amazing how they present and combine the everyday dishes like silk tofu, eggplant, raw tuna, seared tuna, and etc. The tastes and the experience is hard to put into words, but if I have to describe it to you. I will put it this way – amazing, creative, spaceless, and fresh.

Their great food quality kept me going back. Love to bring any of my sushi-lover friends here.

  7. I've never been here, but only have had take out from here. I think it has the perfect amount of fusion if your into that. I loved my take out box! I've been to the original location which was delicious as well.

  8. Had done some research before dining and I was informed not to go with their omakase as the price quantity ratio was too low. Apparently I had made a right decision.

Ordered the asparagus and tuna avocado as starters, miso soup to clear the palate, and eel roll, assorted sashimi as main dishes. The sashimi was a bit mediocre yet I enjoyed tuna avocado a lot. Overall a little bit over priced for a one-star rated Michelin, but worth going for at least once.

The crepe was amazingly good, if you are a big fan of lady M.
