  1. There are so many Sushi restaurants on the UES, and I have the ones I like which unfortunately stops me from checking out any of the others ones. Once in a while, however, I will step outside my comfort zone and try another place, sometimes they're good, sometimes not.

Sushi Suki is typical of most of the places around here, same decor, same amount of tables and same old Sushi. Not that Suki has bad Sushi, it's nothing special, at least not worth changing from the places I already like. If you are into rolls, they do have quite an extensive selection, and the 2 rolls that I did have were pretty darn good, particularly the Lobster Roll, as I find most of the time, the lobster is too chewy- but they did this roll right.

As far as the Nigiri Sushi, it was pretty generic.

All in all, Suki Sushi is a fine restaurant, just not my favorite on the UES…

  2. Best lunch or dinner under $10.00 on the Upper East Side….. Snow crab salad with tempura flakes, cucumber, tobiko, and eel sauce–add a side of rice. When I discovered their crab was so fresh I became instantly addicted. Try it! Now!

  3. I've walked by Sushi Suki a million times and never went inside. Friday night, we headed home from Bailey's pub in search of a eat-in spot still open. Sushi Suki's bright lights spilled out onto the street, and the sign read open until 11. It was 10:45, but they still agreed to seat and serve us.

The menu is pretty typical sushi with typical prices. We ordered some of the usual (tuna avocado, shrimp tempura, california…) and I tried the spicy mango shrimp roll. I'm always looking for good shrimp rolls because I don't like tempura and I don't like the Boston Roll (lettuce just doesn't mesh well with me in a roll). The spicy mango shrimp was great.

We also ordered calamari… it looked really strange – it had a soggy look because the breading was basically white, but it actually tasted really good. And it came with this awesome chili sauce that we wiped clean.

  4. I wish I could give this 3.5 stars, but for me its more of a 3 than a 4 if I have to choose. The fish was pretty fresh but nothing was rolled very well and the fish wasn't expertly cut. I got a sashimi app which was a ton of fish but the quality just wasn't doing it for me. I guess at this price point its a good deal, but I probably wouldn't go here again. Seems like more of a take out or delivery place.

  5. I came here on a weekday for their lunch specials (love lunch specials). It was pretty quiet. The only other people were some middles school students which was a bit odd in the middle of the day, but to each their own.

My friend and I both got the bento box lunch special for $10. It comes with 4 california rolls, 2 shumai, salad, soup and your choice of entree with rice. I got the salmon teriyaki and it was delicious. Just the right amount of tenderness and sauce. They didn't give very many onions with it like some other places which could be good or bad. At the end I guess it would have been nice if there was a little more food, but for $10, it wasn't bad. My friend got the shrimp tempura box and it came with 2-3 giant fried shrimp, along with some fried yams and a broccoli. She seemed satisfied with the amount she got.

Food came out quick and service was attentive (took dishes away right when they were finished). This is a good place to try for  lunch.

  6. This is a ok sushi restaurant. It is very small but looks and smells clean (very important when getting sushi). I ordered the crab salad appetizer and they had a very interesting take on it. It looked like a scoop of ice cream covered in toasted coconut. It was tasty but not overly flavorful. The tempura flakes (toasted coconut) took away from the flavor.

The sushi rolls were creative and tasted ok. I wasn't crazy about the yellowtail with jalapeno nor the specialty roll I ordered (salmon and tuna). It was fresh but not overly flavorful. The spicy tuna in cucumber wrap was delicious. The service was very good. I am more likely to order in from this restaurant as opposed to eat in.

The bathrooms are clean but are located downstairs and have a "someone is going to jump out and grab me" feel.

  7. Delicious and a decent value. Age dashi tofu was great, crab salad was fresh and nicely presented, and the special rolls we tried were both delicious. Fish seemed fresh and the flavor combinations worked. BYOB for wine, and I don't believe there was a corkage fee.

  8. While this establishment serves acceptable food for the location and price point, unfortunately, I have had better at Kobe Sushi about six or so blocks away.

I found the tempura to be not as flaky and slightly greasier, the spicy tuna roll to be less carefully constructed/rolled and a bit too mushy with fish not as fresh, and the beef negimaki to have slightly tougher meat. Also, while their salad offered a wider variety of greens other than iceberg lettuce, some of the greens had a bit of a sandy taste perhaps indicating that they have not been cleaned as thoroughly.

I would not discount this place if you live in the immediate area; give it a try. It is possible that I am being too picky.
