Sushi West
“What this place loses in style points it makes up for in a consistently good eating experience.”
“Every time, I get the Manhattan Roll (salmon with spicy sauce on top, with spicy tuna and tempura crunch inside), and Ikura sushi every time.”
“If that is what you want then stick to the fake over priced Sushi Sambas and the like.”

I like sushi west. But I'd say this is strictly a quick-bite sushi joint in the neighborhood, versus a place that going to offer a Japanese culinary venture (for that, see Aki on W 4th.)
Came here for a very cas. dinner with friends from out of town. I really feel like given this place is on Hudson, that boots points already. It's very unassuming outside- don' t expect grand decor, or service.. space is actually pretty small. Maybe 10 2 seater tables, and a sushi bar. We came at 7:30 (3 of us) and had no problems because it was empty. I was happy I got to sit down despite arriving teeny weeny early.
The menu has everything you need in terms of the basics- rolls, hand rolls, sashimi, special bento (the cooked meat) boxes, sushi/sash combo boxes, all the apps… etc. Nothing special really..
We thought about order drinks/sake but passed on it. I know nothing about Japanese hard liquor so don't know what's good but seems like plenty of patrons liked the beers on draft (sapporo and the other usual suspects). We went right away with the food…
We ordered: veggie tempura- perhaps a tad better than normal tempura, good veggies used (yams, zucchini, asparagus, cucumber)…and not super oily. (but very hot). Pork Gyoza (didn't try this, I don't eat pork but it looked good)., Hijiki seaweed salad…. this was not very good. It was a grainy, finely chopped… and sticky. With some sesame seeds. I wanted to try something new but it was not for me- I quickly was wishing for my house salad with ginger dressing!
Then for the sushi rolls- we shared 4: the manhattan… salmon atop of spicy tuna. Very good – great fish; very fresh, and pressed nicely. Someone here said it was too much rice, but I disagree- it was a good amount. I appreciated that there was a variety of fish in one roll.
We got the white horse- cooked eel, avocado with WHITE tuna on top. I am always a stickler for white tuna because it's not offered everywhere… pretty good. Sweet, like eel should be. Have no complaints here. I've had better white tuna…I'd say this was second to the manhattan.
Overall – I thought the best was the spicy tuna with crunch. Simple spicy tuna- which was had a deep, creamy flavor (yum), but the crunch (from tobiko flakes) added a great texture. Lastly, was the spicy scallop roll.. I didn't have any of this (don't like scallop).
For dessert.. they didn't have much. Granted it was standard neighborhood sushi place but they could have had SOME inventive desserts.. maybe even something with tofu. Maybe I was dreaming of EN down the street. But no, there was just green tea/red ice cream and that in the mochi version. I was so disappointed that it came packaged. I mean, open the damn package to tell me that it's not frozen. And it tasted as such.
Split three ways, it came to $25 for person. I would have been less aggressive in hindsight, as the rolls themselves are standard $10-12, but my friends were in town and we wanted to go all out somewhat.
Unfortunately, sushi west is not the best place for that. Now, the food is really more a 4 star, but the decor and service really bring it down to a 3. The biggest issue with service is that we were very rushed.. the waitress came by to take our order a few times..prompting us to order when we wanted to look over the menu and chat. She didn't ask us about dessert… and she slammed the check down the minute I took the last bite of my mochi.
Now, I know that by 8 onward, the place getting filled with people but still.. there was not crazy line out the door, and being rushed is never cool. It's also very un- Japanese like.
I would probably come back because it's a local, casual sushi joint (I love sushi) but I will look at other places first.
Delicious, filling and fresh sushi in an unassuming setting. Great location along Hudson St though!
The Sunset Roll is amahzing – inside out (the best way in my opinion). Quick service, and quaint ambiance inside. Definitely coming back!
Good cheap sushi when everything else in the area is super expensive. It was a bit empty on a Saturday night, but service was prompt. We ordered the shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, Manhattan, and salmon rolls and the flavor was on par with any other cheap sushi place. They have good sushi deals with their platters ranging from $11 – $20 for one person.
Totally fine……..nothing special, and I have to beleive there are better places in the area. The prices are normal NYC sushi prices, the waitress didn't find my friend funny and the place seems to attract a lot of solo diners, which is cool by me. The service was quick and appreciated because I was ravenous.
My new fave sushi spot. It's close to my place, the food is fresh, the servers are nice and it's pretty cheap in sushi terms.
You can always tell the quality of a sushi restaurant by how fresh their yellowtail sashimi is. And for being such an inexpensive spot, the yellowtail is wonderful here!
Two people can enjoy a very filling meal and drinks for just under $60! (People not from NYC, I know that sounds expensive still, but you'll realize how great that is soon enough.)
Only ordered delivery from here, so can't really comment on restaurant … I WILL say, delivery was F-A-S-T … it almost seemed like 5 minutes, via Seamless. I usually don't like ordering sushi for delivery but this looked and tasted pretty fresh. I tried the sashimi entree and Manhattan Roll – very good. Will give the restaurant a try!
Sushi dinners stress me out and yet they are what I first suggest when meeting up with girl friends before going out. Why do I put myself through the anxiety? Because it's always so darn tasty!
If I had my way I would get a couple pieces of lots of different types of sushi to make my own 8 piece assortment. It would consist of spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, rainbow rolls, and maybe a spider roll for fun. However never have I been offered this so must decide on one specific type… That is unless I go to Sushi on Hudson (also called Sushi West just so you don't walk by the awning like I did!).
Get the Manhattan Roll. You get the tuna and kick of the spicy tuna, crunch of the shrimp tempura, and salmon on top which is reminiscent of the rainbow roll. It was so tasty! I also really liked their ginger dressing on the salad that they brought.
Service was quick, prices are great, and overall it was an easy experience. I'm not around the neighborhood too much but would definitely go back when I'm looking for a sushi experience that isn't so stressful!
*3.5 stars*
Sometimes you are just in the mood for sushi, but your wallet isn't. I tried Sushi West for a casual Tuesday night takeout meal, and it did not disappoint. The fish was good quality and each roll was made to order, so it was much better than the refrigerated "sitting out" Whole Foods type of sushi. I had 3 rolls: a Philadelphia, a spicy tuna, and a larger specialty Green Dragon roll (eel, avocado). I enjoyed each of them, and it was just about the right amount of food… I maybe could have ordered one more roll or something since I had a small lunch.
The only reason I am giving it 3.5 stars instead of 4 is because I gave Kanoyama 4 stars, and the execution here isn't as good. Some of the avocado fell off my Green Dragon roll, and it wasn't as precise as some of the better sushi I have had. But the taste is there, and the fish quality is there, so for this price point, you can't go wrong.
