This food truck makes all the others weep because it kicks ass. Seriously, get food from here and be happy…
Tried the chicken with jasmine rice and papaya salad today. At $9 a meal…it's pretty expensive for a food truck. The chicken was seasoned well but a bit chewy. The Papaya salad was pretty basic…nothing too special. I wasn't too impressed since I expected to get more food for $9.
So much potential, so much flavor, and a poor execution. Really a shame.
The menu is pretty enticing with various spicy and slightly sweet proteins (pork, beef, chicken, tofu, etc) served with a spicy salad and jasmine rice for $9.
I opted for the spicy and sweet pork with the mango salad. Upon opening the container, I look down and it's not generic pork, its thick, layered, pork belly. From a food truck? Man, am I excited. Then I take a bite and two things jump out at me: 1) the favors here are awesome. The sauce is bleeding over to the rice and its delicious. 2) the pork is just not cooked well. It is over done, and tough bordering on rubbery. Such a shame to use a quality pork and cook it to badly, especially with the accompanying favors. The salad also was a great combination of sweet and spicy.
Will I come back here again? Yes, definitely because the favors were spot on, but I will not be ordering the pork again.
Sweet Chili parked outside of my office today for the first time, and something about their description of the cuisine as "Thaietnamese" on the back of the truck caught my attention. All of their entrees have a base of jasmine rice, which I love, so I was in. I ordered the jasmine rice with heavenly beef and the bean sprout salad. For dessert, I ordered the coconut candy. All together, it came out to $12. Very reasonable – and they take credit cards. For me, this is huge. I only carry cash about once a month, which typically prevents me from checking out new food trucks. Also, when people accept credit cards, I always order more.
The food was great. I'm a pretty small girl, but I just wolfed down the entire box of food plus half of the dessert. The beef was great – not fatty and very flavorful. The serving size was ideal – I was able to get a big chunk of beef with every forkful of rice. The salad was also awesome. I typically hate bean sprouts – I will actively remove them from Thai dishes – but the salad totally changed my views. Mixing some of the beef in with it proved to be an excellent choice. The dessert was crazy good – like sticky, sugary crack. My co-workers are currently standing at my desk picking at the remaining half like vultures.
My only complaints are (a) a lack of spiciness and (b) the stickiness of the jasmine rice. For the meat, I would prefer more of a seasoning rub rather than having to rely on sriracha for some heat. Also, they could use chili garlic sauce instead of or in addition to the sriracha for a saltier, bolder kick, which would be nice. For the rice, I would personally prefer something fluffier.
I really hope they keep coming back to my neighborhood – I could see this being a weekly thing for me!
Stopped by the first time after getting out of school early (they close at 3) and happened to walk by the truck on my way to see grandma (not my hood). Impressed by the unique menu, flavors and friendly service – returned again today hoping to try their taro purple rice pudding (they were sold out last time!).
Loved the crunchy slightly salted taro chips over the warm creamy coconut purple rice pudding combo. It can use a little bit more sweetness (perhaps slices of mango? yumm) but it was the perfect comfort food on this freezing afternoon.
I also really enjoyed the coconut rice cake – very unique Asian spice – def don't forget to add a fried egg! I wasn't as big of a fan for the shrimp radish cake however – the red dye? Flavor was a bit off. And I didn't really see any pieces of shrimp? But for $3-4 dollars, these dishes were the perfect snacks!
Super sweet chef and cashier (she gave me a new loyalty card with my previous stamps after I casually told her I misplaced my last one). If only they stay open a bit later, I would def return to try their platter and desserts!
Sweet Chili is a great food truck. I've seen them before at Governor's Island and some other events around the city, but honestly forgot about them until they began making a weekly stop in LIC by my office. and now I'm hooked, Jerry, I'm hooked!
I usually get a green papaya salad and either the chili chicken or spicy pork belly. both of these meat choices are great; the "heavenly beef" wasn't bad, but I prefer the chicken or pork belly. the chicken and pork tend to be a bit more tender and flavorful. for an extra buck I top it off with a fried egg for a protein boost.
of the trucks that camp out here, they seem to move the lines the fastest. I appreciate that.
