Probably the best ice cream in Queens! With great flavors, come great crowds. Not so convenient in this small space. I made the mistake of coming in at the same time as two Girl Scout troops. Besides that, parking is tough in the area.
Now that I've gotten the negatives out of the way, YAY. I was able to sample a few flavors from here. The Dirty Razz was alright, and the Kitchen Sink (called that because it had a lot of different candies mixed in) was pretty good too. I wasn't a fan of the Superman flavor, though – the girl behind the ice cream said it was sorta like Fruity Pebbles, but it left me with more of a bubble gum taste. Whatever it was, it does make for a pretty scoop. I AM a fan of their mango lassi and blazed almond flavors! Their mango lassi had more mango flavor than some mango lassis that I've had, and their blazed almond reminded me of the almond milk tea from Kung Fu tea.
Needless to say, this place has a lot of options – besides all the "regular" ice cream, they've got overs, sorbets, dairy-free ice cream and fudge stickle that I've apparently got to try
When it's National Ice Cream Day, you celebrate.
So glad I found this little gem. Sweet Jane's is a cute, local spot that churns out (literally) some really unique flavors at a solid price. The shop itself is small and can get packed esp on a hot summer day. But it's worth the wait.
They have a chalkboard menu of their offerings – so while you're waiting peruse the many many cool flavors. Definitely step out of your comfort zone and try something other than vanilla/chocolate. If you want some recommendations, the girls let me try a decent amount:
-Purple Rain: A MUST. This Blueberry Lavender scoop is actually dairy-free but you wouldn't even notice it. It's incredibly creamy and the flavors really pop. It's one of their best-sellers.
-Lemon Berry: very tart which I like but the yogurt base makes for a great pairing.
-Birthday Cake: super sweet and looks pretty.
-Mango Lassi: just like the drink. So good.
They also have the Konery cones if you wanna spice up your ice cream to the next level. Also! Heads up, they're closed on Mon-Tues.
Sweet Janes, thank you for being so close to my apt. Can't wait to try every flavor in your store!
Yummmy yum yum!! My sweet tooth was telling me I needed some ice cream so I decided to do some yelping while in the area. Glad I got to try this place. They have a lot of flavors and the employees are so patient and nice. I was pacing back and forth between the carts of ice cream for a good 10 minutes before I settled on Green Leaf (green tea ice cream). I usually dislike green tea flavored food, but I enjoyed their green tea flavor because it wasn't overwhelmed or overly sweet. They offered and let me try a handful of flavors which were all very good. I especially liked the Lemon Berry, but I wasn't in the mood for a fruity flavor. I jokingly said "I'm going to walk out of here without an ice cream in my hand because you're letting me have so much ice cream!" to which the employee laughed and said it was okay. I'd def be willing to stop by again when I'm in Astoria.
Mhmmmmm so so many interesting flavors here. I had the mint cookies and cream and it was divine. These aren't your typical flavors. For this nice gem in Astoria, I would highly recommend for you to stop in and sample a few crazy flavors.
On my second time coming here, I loved it so much I had to leave another review.
I got two scoops, the "kitchen sink" and the "beastly nanastar," featuring an assortment of all their ingredients in the first, and bacon-banana in the second. ($6.50)
I really enjoyed both flavors immensely. I will always have a heart for all desserts like a kitchen sink which are pretty much a mix of everything they've got. I came across some cookie dough, some crunchy elements (for lack of better terms), and notably popcorn. You've gotta trust me when I say that throwing all kinds of things in ice cream is a good thing.
The beastly nanastar was the more adventurous of the two flavors. Once I heard bacon, I had to have a scoop. Banana-bacon doesn't sound like the ideal combination, but there's something about a salty bacon cutting through a very sweet banana that just makes it work!
Don't let the idea of "vegan" ice cream fool you–Sweet Jane's is the best ice cream in Astoria!
I'm craving for ice cream & check out this place. I had the smores & my friend got the salty caramel pretzel & mint cookies & cream in a birthday cake cone. Its very creamy & satisfying! I tried my friends icecream & I love the mint cookies & cream. Very strong mint but blends in well with the flavor. The cone is crispy & flavorful. Glad that they have this icecream place in Astoria. I'll be back for more to check out other flavor especially its almost summer time!
Pretty good ice cream. I got S'mores, which just tasted like regular chocolate, and Thai Coconut which had peanuts and was very tasty. I personally found both too sweet though and my throat hurt after eating it.
What I didn't like was being swamped with free samples by the overly aggressive employees. They gave me at least 6 or 7 flavors I didn't even ask to try and kept asking which was my favorite. I get they were trying to make a sale but it just made me uncomfortable. I'd rather go somewhere more laid back.
I've been fasting this week for Orthodox Lent and so I can't have meat, oil, dairy, or eggs. I've seen this place hiring on Craigslist so I remembered it having dairy free options so I went straight to it. Unfortunately, I completely forgot that EGGS aren't dairy haha and they do use eggs, so disclaimer! Not vegan! I worked in a dairy free bakery before where we also used eggs, you'd think I'd learn my lesson by now)
Anyway, I was a little upset but also so delighted by the ice cream so whatever.
When I walked in, I was very shy and didn't know where to look or what to expect. This girl gave me FIVE SAMPLES! Big ones, too! I tried the banana chocolate chip- amazing. The blueberry- amazing. The chocolate- amazing. The carrot cake- impressive! And then I got a sample of the mint cookies and cream for my mom, and she loved it.
I ended up getting three scoops in a cup (I went all in!) Carrot cake, chocolate, and the mint crumb. The carrot cake was terrific but I can't imagine eating any more then just a scoop of it, as it does get a little weird and sweet after a while- but I'd definitely get it again. The chocolate was great- when can you go wrong with chocolate? But the star of the show was the mint cookies and cream. I don't even like mint that much but it was SO good!
It was $8 though and I tipped the two sweet associates $2 so I literally paid ten bucks for ice cream, but hey! I'm definitely coming back. And I'm bringing people with me!
— UPDATE —
The supervisor reached out to me via Yelp, and she let me know that the dairy free flavors don't use eggs!
I called the store and the worker said they did, but I'm assuming she was new and not fully aware. Accidents happen and it didn't effect anything for me anyway, but just incase anyone reads my review and turns away because they think eggs are a main ingredient.. good news for you!!!
Ask about vegan options.
Enjoy!
