Cocktails, Appetizers and dining at Swine will probably make your heart flutter through out the the course of your meal depending on what you choose for the evening, but I was totally ready for a full throttle course of fattening goodness starting with the appetizers and finishing up the dinner with all the fixings of Mr. Porky the Pig Pork Belly Fat, Bone Marrow & Duck fat laden burgers.
We started off on this 6000 calorie feast with Potato Chip Nachos which lived up to all the hype we read about it and is definitely the Mac of the Show, it was cheesy, greasy nice small chunks of pork belly fat smothered in five cheese fondue and topped off with a nice little kick of jalapeño, I will gladly recommend this dish to everyone as a must try appetizer and be sure to share this dish with a friend or date so your both stuffed fat and happy from this.
Next up we had the Roasted Bone Marrow – this is a heart stopper and where our hearts did a bit of a pitter patter as we scooped out all of the flavored gelatinous marrow onto our grilled breads, this was big enough to share and is in fact plated to share and you should share; it was almost too much for us to finish it without feeling like total gluttons, good stuff just need to add a pinch of salt to bring out the seasoning.
For the next part of our porky the pig dinner feast we ordered the Pork belly with Pickled cabbage & sweet chili glaze – and my heart sank just a wee bit because I was expecting the top skin to be crispy and it was soft like jelly not a hint of crisp in site and a insult to Pork belly in my opinion but the pickled cabbage and sweet chili glaze made me forgive not having the crispy skin since the flavors melded so well with the Mr. Porky belly enough that we still enjoyed it.
We were greedy this evening as you can tell thus far but we weren't about to leave without having the famed Bone Marrow & Brisket Burger and my friend had the Duck Fat Brisket Burger of which I really love a greasy fat burger loaded up with more Bone marrow and it was everything I expected and wanted it to be, delicious.
My friend on the other hand didn't really care for her Duck Fat burger but didn't really say much of why she didn't, so I'll assume she was already on greasy fat overload from the Nacho Chips, Roasted Bone marrow and Pork Belly fat. All good stuff.
For Cocktails – you can't go anywhere with me and not have a cocktail, I ordered the Jalapeno (all up in yo) Biz-Niz which is supposed to be jalapeno-infused tequila blanco, cynar, lime, beet, basil-syrup, black salt – Mehhh, didn't do it for me but not bad just not for me.
The friend ordered the Sue's Revenge which is a concoction of D.H. krahn gin, suze, contratto bianco vermouth, grapefruit bitters, rosemary stir and this did it for her and me, LOL. so you know that was my next cocktail order for the evening and was just perfect.
The dining service here was attentive enough, plates were cleared so we could make room for more fatty goodness fairly quickly and the manager gave us complimentary drinks upon our departure so it was very nice evening here and we shall return.
P.S. and I love the Black and white photo's of vintage Sexy rock rocker Chicks too!
I SO wanted this place to be mind blowing, but it was just ok.
The bone marrow burger had great texture but not much flavor. Woefully under-seasoned even when I added pickles and spread on the sauce that came on the side. The potato chip nachos are definitely interesting but something I'd rather have in a dive bar. And I didn't enjoy any of the cocktails and wound up ordering off the menu, but even then I didn't finish my drink.
The free pinball is fun, though!
I had high hopes for this gastropub when I looked at the menu so I organized a dinner with a small group of friends. The atmosphere was very cozy but dimly lit. The drinks and appetizers were delicious but my burger was unfortunately very underdone.
Appetizer: We ordered the bacon wrapped figs, meat and cheese plate, and deviled eggs. All the appetizers were amazing and full of flavor. The bacon wrapped figs were my favorite by far. The salty bacon was a perfect contrast to the sweet and sticky figs. The deviled eggs were also pretty good but nothing spectacular. Meat and cheese platter was also pretty good, I'd recommend the burrata.
Entree: I ordered the famed bone marrow burger which came with potatoes. The burger was huge! I added the lettuce and tomato and could barely pick the whole thing up without it falling apart. I ended up having to use a knife and fork out of courtesy to my table mates. The meat itself was seasoned well and very rich from the bone marrow. I ordered medium on my burger and got rare, almost raw instead. The meat was still very red and lukewarm in the middle. Very unfortunate since I really enjoyed the flavors. One of my friends got the burger with chorizo but unfortunately couldn't eat it since his was even more raw than mine and he was a rightfully a little freaked out about eating raw chorizo.
Overall, I would try again and hope that night was just an off night for the kitchen. The drinks were delicious and creative so maybe I'll just grab drinks here next time.
Absolutely love, love, love this place! Was looking up different potential restaurants to try out for my birthday dinner and after reading reviews and seeing pictures, I wanted to give this place a go. And boy.. was it well worth it.
Everything was delicious and amazing. Started off with their deviled eggs, which has a slight kick. Then moved on the glazed pork belly which was phenomenal, would be happy eating nothing but that for the rest of my days… if only I was so lucky. Then as entrees I got the special of the day, which was a 3 meat burger (can't remember the name to be honest) with a side of Brussel sprouts. We also got the pork shank, and the meat literally just fell off the bone. Unfortunately the sauce wasn't as good as I was hoping it to be, but everything was good enough, to the point where no plate was left with any traces of food.
Definitely left their full and happy. Must say I love the ambiance of the place. Super trending and completely digging the light up SWINE sign. Definitely the place to hit up if you're in the mood for good food and good vibes!
This place rocks!
I've had Swine bookmarked for so many months..ever since the beginning of 2015! Then one night, I was chillin with my friend and he said he was craving a good burger. So I went through my bookmarks, passing Shake Shack and Burger Bistro…and then I saw Swine! A bone marrow & brisket burger sounded very appealing, so off we went to the West Village.
Upon arrival, restaurant's interior was very cozy and warm. Bar was upstairs with a few tables and additional seating downstairs by the kitchen. Lighting was pretty dim. Kudos for the small and concise menu.
For apps, we started off with The Mac Daddy & Deviled Eggs. The Mac n Cheese was pretty good..could have been a little more cheesier. But the star of the Mac n Cheese was actually the crispy Onion Rings stacked on top. They were amazing! Perfectly seasoned, deliciousness!
For entrees, we each had the Bone Marrow & Brisket Burger, cooked medium rare. Burger was very yummy! Really liked the bun, burger itself could do with a touch more salt & pepper though. But overall, it was definitely a burger that satisfied my friend's burger crave. And it was an excellent first experience at Swine! I'll definitely be back to try the other items on the menu!
After a delusional attempt to walk into Minetta Tavern without reservations, my friends and I settled on Swine to get our bougie burger fix. Without doing much research on it, I saw "brisket and bone marrow burger" and that was more than enough to base our decision on.
The burger: Not quite as good as it sounds. If you didn't tell me what it was supposed to be, I might have enjoyed it more. The patty was juicy, thick, and cooked to a pretty precise medium-rare. The bun was charred on top, giving it that hard/soft texture that I find so desirable. I think there was a lettuce leaf of sorts in it, but the downstairs area was so dark and that one leaf so undistinguishable that it didn't even matter. The problem is that I got zero bone marrow taste, period. You can tell when a burger has brisket, and that held true here, but we were all initially enticed by the idea of the marrow integrated in the patty, and we all left disappointed.
Additionally, we shared an order of potato nachos, but I found the chips pretty bitter and was done after trying one. The fries that came with our burgers were very thick wedges and pretty bland, and the pickles were unanimously thumbed down by the table.
Look, Swine is a cute spot, and I did see some other attractive items on the menu, but I would not return here for the burger. It just doesn't stand out enough to go for again in a sea of upscale burgers out here.
Fantastic plates in a great West Village location with a cozy/intimate ambiance.
Potato Chip Nachos and Pork Belly were tremendous appetizers. The Nachos were especially a hit – perfectly crafted and a delicious blend of cheeses. Had the Bone Marrow and Brisket burger for my main – and that night they made a special out of the burger, jazzing it up a bit by blending in some chorizo, beef and duck confit. The flavors mixed really well, but I think it could have used a bit more seasoning. For drinking, I'll have to find out what Cabernet Sauvignon we had because it was a great selection.
My only gripe(s): the special burger came with a gorgonzola cheese, which I asked to substitute out for the cheese that regularly comes with the burger (tarentaise). The server checked on that, and said it was fine but that there would be a slight up-charge. For substituting cheese? Also, I couldn't really see because it was dark, but the burger did taste a bit undercooked – as some other people on here have mentioned as well.
All in all pretty great and will return to try more.
Swine makes a really great burger, but without an extra touch or even enjoyable ambience to justify the hefty price.
I had ordered the potato nachos with pork belly and the bone marrow brisket burger.
Maybe bone marrow is just that subtle, but I had a tough time saving the marrow in the burger (was it mixed into the meat, on top? I'm not actually sure). Nonetheless, it was a textbook perfect burger. It's very juicy, on a soft bun, with your standard condiments. And that's the thing. It's standard. At $20, I'd expect some type of innovation, but I don't think Swine delivers it. Again, I'm really just nitpicking, but $20 is a lot for a burger and fries.
The potato nachos were straightforward also, with the pork belly tasting more like crispy pancetta. I enjoyed the sauce.
Big points for the "Jalapeño in your business" drink, whose spiciness and smokiness went quite well with the burger.
Swine is a bit packed on weekend nights. You can find reservations on OpenTable without a problem, but it still means you're eating a few steps away from a bar. Though the music was nice, the amount of people gathered around drinking made the restaurant much louder than I would have liked.
Swine delivers when it comes to standard New American gastropub dishes, but at that price point, it doesn't bring in anything new to the table. Nonetheless, the execution is great. Come if you want an amazing burger.
