Tabata Ramen

“My favorite is the Sutemina Raman, no meet with tofu since I am a vegetarian.”

“Mmmm, boy oh boy, the coconut based broth was delicious, not too strong, but enough to get a true flavor explosion.”

“I had the Sutamina Ramen, which is what I consider "a flavor of all trades" type of ramen.”

  1. Who knew you would be able to find a good ramen place in this part of the city? The Tabata ramen, yum! I was in the area and only came across this place because the place I originally wanted to go to had rude service, thank goodness for that! Anyway, slightly bigger than a hole in the wall, we sat by the register and the ramen came out quickly and piping hot. We ordered the Tabata ramen, tonkotsu ramen and fried oysters.

The flavors and textures of the Tabata ramen were different; it reminded of me Southeast Asian inspired flavors and the creaminess of it went well with the ramen noodles. The tonkotsu ramen was good as well, just the right amount of flavor. The fried oysters were pretty good, but not a must have when you're here. Overall, so glad to find good ramen here and if you're in the area in need of a ramen fix, this place will get the job done!

  2. 3.5-4: This place is quite easy to miss because it's so narrow and the signage isn't eye popping. All in all, a very solid place for a bite to eat, especially on crazy 8th Ave where there's a lot of fast-food. Also, super close to Port Authority, if you're headed there.

Inside, it's quite small, but we got there on a Wednesday evening around 7 pm and there were just a few people inside. We were seated right away; the gyoza ($6) was juicy and tasty and I got the miso ramen ($10.50), which had pork, carrots, bean sprouts and some greens. There was also a hint of spiciness to the broth. The ramen is definitely not the best I've ever had and the portion were adequate but not huge, but I enjoyed the food, service, and experience. I wish there was a ramen place that didn't make you super thirsty afterward from the salt!

The rap radio station they were blasting wasn't very Japanese or pleasant and I would suggest changing that!

  3. Ever sleep with someone and then find out later that person is an ex's sibling? I ate here not knowing this is the little sister of an ex that I dumped in a horrible breakup, until after. Confused? Me too. I'm horrible at remembering names, streets, and restaurants. I can blame it on the alcohol, but I'm not a heavy drinker, so obviously it's the weed.

The original hooker in question is Tabata (see my review). Tabata Ramen, is the better version of her older, bitter and cruel sister, but only in service. The broth here is light and has good flavor. The pork belly (or charsu? i'm not gonna look it up, because I'm too lazy right now) that come with many of the bowls is sliced thin, like bacon. Odd, but I'm kind of into it, which is what I usually say after a horrible date.

I've had a few of the bowls of Ramen in this joint and to make a long story short, it's better then what you get at a deli/lunch spot, but no where near as good as the top spots in the city. The seating is tight, because the space is small, the way a ramen joint should be. In a pinch and with time constraints, treat it like a booty call- it's good enough.

  4. This is one of two locations in midtown Manhattan, fast pace, enthusiastic host, thumbs up for the quick service, great ramen for the perfect ramen price (a bowl of ramen should never cost $15-$20), I will be coming back for lunch.

Today I walked in because my colleague told me about this place, close by work, not a long wait (I should not wait more than 10 mins at a ramen place), I went on my own so I ended up sharing a table with another customer that I made friends with, how easy was that!

I usually only eat the shio ramen at most ramen places, if they don't serve this, I go to tonkotsu, oh boy their tonkotsu is creamy and flavorful, but not full of msg-sweetness or stickiness in the taste buds, they spent a good amount of creating this broth, I couldn't resist but took a couple of sips of it even though you're not really supposed to drink the broth of any ramen bowl. The chasiu was not bad, the eggs were alright, the noodles were chewy, they've got a great texture exactly how I like my ramen noodles.

Generally, one bowl of ramen does not fill me up, so I ordered the karaage (marinated chicken thigh, deep fried) as well, it's very tasty with a few drops of lemon juice. It's not greasy, it's fresh and tasty.

I will come back to try the miso ramen!!

  5. If you're looking for a (clean) hole in the wall joint that serves ramen .. this fits the bill perfectly.

It's nice to see Tabata Ramen do well enough to set up a little offshoot/outpost on 8th avenue.  They serve pretty much the same menu as the main branch and I was pleased with my quick experience.

The folks here were friendly and service was fast and polite.  My baseline is usually the shoyu ramen, which I like to use as a guide to see if they can at least get the basics right.  The noodles here were pretty solid and the broth was excellent.  Not greasy at all and the trimmings (bamboo shoots, roast pork) were all well made.  I like the fact that the broth was not too salty or greasy and the flavor was excellent.

I'm a fan of this place.  It's a great place to grab a simple/no-frills bowl of ramen right in the heart of midtown.

  6. If you're looking for a solid, hole-in-the-wall joint with good ramen, then look no further. Tabata Ramen (or Tabata 2 – according to the sign above the door) is easy to miss amidst all the other signage, but I'm glad I stumbled upon it. It's cozy and the service is efficient, with food served quickly after you order it. I've never had cold ramen before but wasn't disappointed with what I got: the Tan Tan Men's soup was tasty and flavorful, and the noodles were perfect with a good texture. The minced pork was wonderful, and the spring onions and cucumbers rounded the dish off nicely. Had the lychee sake and no complaints on my end.

  7. I was doing a little shopping during my lunch break when I walked past this place. If you blink, you will miss it. Nestled between an adult DVD store and a 2 bros pizzeria lies this little gem.

I entered and was immediately greeted warmly in Japanese, I assume? The restaurant was very clean and I was shown to my table by my server. He was very professional.

I ordered the tonkotsu ramen. The broth was on point, the noodles had a good thickness and firmness. The pork however was not as tender as it should have been. It was either over cooked or was cooked the previous day and the leftovers were served to me. Had the pork melted in my mouth, this place would have gotten 5 stars.

With that being said, I will definitely return to this spot. I'm looking forward to tasting everything else on the menu. I recommend you do the same.

  8. Solid 4 stars for their rice dishes!!  I was suspicious at this place at first just because it is so close to port authority and I feel most restaurants that are close to port authority are just for tourists , but after I had lunch at here for 2 times , I am really satisfied. I had their curry rice with pork  and their chicken Katsu Don , both are very delicious !!!!  I would definitely want to try their Ramen next time , hope their Ramen would be as good as their rice dishes !
