  1. Better than Taco Bell…if that's saying anything.

Stopped in after a Monday night of whiskey and wandering with a craving for some authentic Spanish cuisine to find its way upon my palate. Had bookmarked then months ago as it was the only taco shop in a sea of pizza parlors down in the financial district so I figured why not give it a shot. At first glance, you won't think it's a Taco House…as it looks nothing like a house of taco and more like the typically quick Chinese restaurant setup you see everywhere. Once inside, you realize why it has that quick Chinese restaurant feel, mainly because it was clearly a Chinese restaurant at some point and someone decided to change it into a taco house…but changed nothing else about it. Like, really, they changed narrowly a thing from their old ways, so much so I think the wok they cooked my taco rice in is the same wok they use to make the delicious Chinese Stir-Fried Rice I typically order from Chinese restaurants.

The tacos were nothing spectacular but weren't terrible by any means. A little light on cheese and sauces, but the chicken had a savory flavor to it that was exactly what I was looking for before riding the rail cars down the Manhattan underground. They do offer delivery service I noticed, as an elderly man made his way in to grab a bag of food then back out into the night upon his little motorized bicycle. As far as being a place I would venture into again, I'd have to say if I'm in the mood for a taco, I would make my ways elsewhere because this is not going to give you the satisfaction you may be craving.

  2. Oh my. Do NOT order from here.

I ordered through seamless and now I wish I had reviewed the yelp reviews!

Ordering and delivery was fine. I was shocked to see an Asian man delivered my food in a red bag (common in Chinatown) and when he handed me my food he kind of stood there…..was he waiting on tip? He then yelled something in Chinese to me and left……what the!

Ok the food. This isn't a quesidilla? Looks like two flat breads together. Fine, I'll try it I said.

Where's the cheese? Didn't I order chicken? I called the store and an Asian picks up. Why is a Mexican restaurant being ran by Asians? He yelled a few times in Chinese to his co-workers and he asked "am I sure it's not chicken because steak & chicken look alike" and said the cheese was mixed in. I gave up on the phone call because it wasn't going anywhere.

To say the least, I threw it away and definitely won't order ever again! Save your money and go to a real Mexican place!

  3. The food was ok just for the Nacho cheese but the rest…it was too salty. I had the chicken burrito and it taste dry and salty and a chicken taco which didn't go to well for the stomach

  4. Darni t! I wrote this entire witty commentary about how awesome this place was and I actually changed the rating from 4-stars to 5-stars after trying their grilled chicken burrito but the stupid webpage deleted my review!! ARGH!!!!

Ok. So now you will only get the dry no nonsense review.

Taco House is the quintessential hole in the wall. It is small. It is cheap. And it is possibly dirty but I tried not to look.

I ordered a chili soft taco (meat was too salty but soft taco was fresh and yummy–larger than normal–which is how I roll), and a grilled chicken burrito with a side of guac.

The chicken burrito is humongazoid! I needed all three hands to hold this baby up. I got the lunch special which cost $5.99 and it came with a soda. It was delish. Grilled chicken was good. Guac was good–def not as "putrid" as another Yelper stated. Maybe they got the old batch?

Salsa could use some work. It reminded me of a runny canned salsa.

I am definitely a fan and will definitely return. This is especially good after I went to Mama Mexico in Englewood NJ last night to try and satisfy my craving for mexican. After I spent $125 last night, I still craved Mexican…thats how bad Mama Mexico was. Save your money. I could have gotten 21 Burritos at Taco House for that money!

  5. Nachos with guacamole, side of extra jalapenos and a diet coke.

Pure bliss for under 6$ at your door in less than 10 minutes. Kid you not.

  6. o.k. so I still love the food here and have been wondering how they hold the line on their prices. So today I discover that all of the dishes have been downsized.

The containers for the lunch specials (C1, etc.) are all in smaller sized containers and the quesadilla are smaller too (and with a lot less cheese).

I still love the taste of the food I just don't appreciate the downsizing on the portions, I'd rather pay a quarter more to know I'm getting the same dish I had last week..

There are about four other tex-mex restaurants within a two block radius, I'll have to checkout the portion sizes at those locations. May be time to switch.

  7. Never been inside Taco House. Never actually even seen it. And that's fine with me. The food here is just "fine" too but I religiously only order quesadillas. Totillas are always fresh. Seriously addicting. Also, they are fast. Not just like, they deliver "on time" and within the time they tell you it takes to deliver. I mean, they slash that time in half. I swear sometimes my doorbell rings in 5 minutes (I'm about 16 blocks away, just counted.) My roommates and I joke that the door men in our building secretly work for Taco House. For all I know, they do.

  8. I'm new to using Seamless and I made the horrible mistake of choosing a place based on no delivery charge and the star rating on Seamless instead of cross referencing it with Yelp. If I had, I certainly would not have chosen Taco House. But it was late, I was starving, and I didn't feel like buying $20 worth of food so there you go.

The order took three times longer than it was supposed to, and when I called to make sure it was coming they didn't seem to care at all. The delivery guy looked pissed to the point of being alarming, but it was late and I live in a walk-up, so I cut him a break.

Then came the food. It was probably stupid to get a tostada salad, but anyway it was on the menu and it was called a Guacamole Tostada Salad, so I was hopeful. The thing came in a pastry box and was completely disassembled. The lettuce was in one corner of the box, the cheese in another. There were no beans. The guacamole that was so prominently promoted was in a teeny tiny container, like the size of the salsa cups at a taqueria. Same with the sour cream that I paid extra for.

It was the saddest meal ever and it put a bad taste in my mouth about Seamless. I'm going to keep trying because I'm lazy and hungry very often, but I definitely will not be going back to Taco House, whether it's online or in person!
