Ok so I finally tried Taco King today with a co worker and the reviews on Yelp are very accurate.
Taco King is at best a step up from a Taco Bell.
When you walk in your get a Chinese food take out feeling. From the menus that are in the same font as a Chinese restaurant to the multiple chefs that are all Asian and the containers you are served the food in. It's basically a Chinese take out place serving Mexican food. It just doesn't work.
The food is cheap $3 for most tacos and $8 for a burrito. The food is absolutely bland and has no seasoning at all. It was very disappointing and the complete opposite of what Mexican food should be. SALT, SPICES And Complete seasoning are needed. The chicken taco had chicken cut up that was teriyaki chicken that you get at a Chinese restaurant. It was not cut and seasoned at all.
We ordered the nachos to try "authentic nachos" as per the owner. They were store bought nachos put in a fryer and slices of cheese put on top. See pics.
How do you screw up nachos? You go to Taco King.
If your looking for a quick taco place after a night of drinking then you won't be disappointed. If your looking for Bergan County quality Mexican absolutely no was you will find it here.
Taco King more like Taco Jester.
Such a shame
First impression, what is this place ? It looked a like a converted Chinese food place which also included an all Asian staff. Not exactly what you would find in a mexican taco place. Either way there were a lot of options but both my mom and I settled on a grilled chicken quesadilla supreme. Supreme meaning with lettuce, tomato, guac, and sour cream and salsa on the side. I really was interested in getting gaucamole but since this place seemed a little off I decided to wait and see how it was on my quesadilla. We sat and waited for a few minutes and someone brought out our food. The minute I looked at it I knew it was weird. It was a quesadilla with two thick tortillas that were put together as a sandwhich. A normal quesadilla is folded over bc there's a lot of melted cheese. This one barely had any cheese, in fact I had to open it up to see if they had put any at all! In addition to the no little cheese in my chicken and cheese quesadilla, there was barely any gaucamole. It was very bland. I'm glad now that I didn't end up getting the gaucamole in addition to my food. The whole atmosphere of this place just kind of well throws things off. It was also very sparse in there which made it even weirder. There was one Sombrero on the wall. I don't know if this place is going to last to be honest with you.
Normally it take me two visits to want to review a food establishment. But for the benefit of those who are lucky enough to read this review before stepping foot inside, I want to paint a clear picture of what you are getting yourself into before you make the same (regrettable) decision as me and say to yourself "oh cool. there is a new taco place in Radburn plaza. i should go check that out." While in theory, that sounds like a great thought process and I commend you for thinking that way especially with the lack of quality food options in Fair Lawn, you are better off with a chain like Chipotle or Qdoba and I never ever ever say that.
Since Yelp is a place for opinions I will graciously express mine as I have done so often before. While I commend the owners for recognizing the absence of something like "Tex-Mex" in a town of 30,000 people they are getting 1 star for their extremely poor execution of their grand idea. Again, I appreciate the recognition of a business need but remember, even McDonalds once served up high quality food.
Here are my issues:
First and most importantly. The food was absolutely loathsome. A rather pathetic excuse for Tex-Mex. Seriously, it was awful.
Okay picture this. You buy a bag of store bought Tostitos, sprinkle some of that pre-shredded cheddar from the packaged cheese section of the grocery store, and add some canned black beans, olives, and a couple overcooked shrimp and pieces of steak, and then toss all that in one of those microwavable Chinese food containers, nuke, and sit down to eat it afterwards? Oh yeah I forgot to mention the free guac she added on top that was clearly store bought as well. Not even the good stuff from whole foods. Seemed more like some shameful guac from ShopRite. Maybe this is okay when it's after the bars let out and you are just throwing together everything you have in your pantry in order to satisfy your hunger. It is not okay when you are paying $10 for the worst nachos you have ever digested. Oh and by the way that digestion process isn't exactly going great for me right now (6 hours later). We also had some tacos. Those were vile too.
I'm sorry, but opening a shop that looks like every trashy Chinese food restaurant I have ever seen, throwing a sombrero and a picture of a cactus on the wall, and googling "what should be on my new tex-mex restaurant menu?" does not mean you know tex-mex. What it means is you saw a business opportunity for tex-mex and you put zero effort into sourcing quality ingredients, learning how to make a proper burrito or taco, and decided I am going to make a quick buck off these people by feeding them garbage. Sorry, but I'm not buying it … ever again at least.
