Want some good authentic and cheap mexican food. This is the place. I've ordered from this place several times and they do not disappoint!
In an attempt to eat more "locally," I stopped in to Tacos Mexico for a fast and cheap dinner. Three tacos ready in 7 minutes for $7.50? I'm so there. Although I was in a rush, I opted to eat in (tacos are best when not soggy) and that way I would get chips and salsa. The salsa was fresh and bright and on the watery side (which is normal for fresh salsa). I actually ate the entire dish of salsa. By myself. I also ordered three tacos: Vegetariano, Tripa, and Lengua Vaporado (vegetarian, tripe, and steamed beef tongue). As I sat for my seven minutes, I took in the decor – plastic tablecloths, dim lighting, pastel walls, Mundo on TV, and the large order counter and open kitchen beyond. Its a utilitarian space – it doesn't try to be upscale or touristy. Just comfortable enough for a quick bite. I've also never seen it uber busy in here – at most, there are 5 tables occupied out of the 10. So bring the friends!
The tacos were all wrapped in butcher paper to keep them together and keep the filling from falling out. The tortillas are appropriately double wrapped (does anyone peel off one layer to avoid extra carbs like me?) I ate them in the order I listed and they went from okay to awesome. The Vegetariano is refried beans, rice, lettuce, guac, and radish. It wasn't filling without being substantial and I was hoping for more flavor oomph, like peppers or mushroom. The tripa was more like pork cracklins. It was fried and crispy chewy and diced. It was heavy, oily, and not as flavorful as I hoped. (I was hoping for stewed tripe.) The beef tongue, however, was everything I wanted. Large chunks of super tender meat, minced onion and fresh cilantro, a delicate flavor… Totally worth ordering five of these. Anyway, I'll be back!
Giving this place four stars because they deserve it, even though it doesn't meet my standards for Mexican food (I miss California a lot right now). I feel like some people expect too much for NYC Mexican when we should just accept what we have for its face value and appreciate all the other amazing food we have.
The service is really good and welcoming and they also deliver woo! They have a great selection of drinks and really good horchata. They could improve on the guac in my opinion, it was kind of just like blended avocado with not much flavor otherwise. But the chips + salsa were mad gooood!
The menu is surprisingly large: I tried carne asada tacos and the enchiladas with molé sauce. The tacos were amazing and double wrapped with paper on the outside to keep everything together. The meat was well seasoned and the molé sauce was GREEAT!
Very underwhelmed with the food here. I don't remember exactly what I got the first time but I recall feeling really disappointed. I went back again the other day because I wanted to give it another shot. I really like terrible-for-you Mexican food (you know, the kind that's smothered in cheese and has crunchy tortilla chips in it) and I was hoping that maybe the first time was a fluke and that this time would magically be better. It was not. 🙁
Service is really good, both times I was there the lady behind the counter was super attentive and nice. The place is a bit run down, but if the food were good I'd just avoid that by ordering it to go. I don't think this place warrants a third visit. I'm going to continue my quest for greasy nachos and quesadillas elsewhere.
Just ordered take-out and it is the best Mexican I've had in Astoria so far. Since this is my first time ordering from this place, this review may or may not change in the future.
Overall, the food tasted good, but the prices could use a bit of a workout.
Let's not mince words here: Tacos Mexico is a hole-in-the-wall. Not particularly clean or inviting, they make good, cheap mexican food. They deliver until 2 AM. They make delicious fatty tacos, burritos, stuffed with meat, rice, cheese. Great for after a night out. They are better than Taco Truck, and thankfully cleaner than Yummy Taco (as great as THAT name is). Great for after leaving one of the many publick houses on Broadway after a few flagons of- oh you get it…
They also have a variety of imported soda options, ranging from the expected Jarritos flavors to an apple soda, along with imported (read: REAL SUGAR) coke and Sprite.
Grab a menu, order some food, enjoy, go home. Simple as that.
I recently joined a couple of my coworkers for lunch at the nearby Tacos Mexico. Although I had never noticed the place, the giant mural painted down the street from it made it seem pretty authentic and tempting.
My coworkers also told me that it was speedy and cheap, perfect for lunch!
The atmosphere of Tacos Mexico is interesting, clammy and barren. Have you ever seen one of those Steven Segal movies where an old, desolate restaurant serves as a cover for an illegal drug or child laborer smuggling operation? This place kind of gave me that vibe, without an air of imminent danger.
Although every menu item was illustrated with a picture, I couldn't understand the menu for the life of me. So I gnoshed on free chips and salsa until I found something that sounded vaguely familiar…"Cubana"?
I thought that I had ordered a cuban sandwich…
Meanwhile, my coworkers and I kept filling up on the free chips and water (did I mention that we're cheap?)…Which is when I noticed that my water tasted like Sprite or lemons or Mr.Clean.
About half an hour LATEr…our food finally arrived. We were becoming a bit testy, because our lunch break was almost over…for just a couple of sandwiches? And then I noticed that my "Cubana" was slathered in a thick, nasty layer of MAYO! Ugh, I hate mayonnaise and I was so turned off by this. I barely ate half and then wrapped the rest up in a hurry. If you're going to stick a bunch of mayo on my sandwich, at least give me the option to opt out!
And then the waitress hinted that we should call ahead if we're "all coming" next time…as if 4 is a large crowd to serve in a near empty restaurant?
Yeah, next time I will call ahead and say "thanks, but no thanks!"
It has been years since I last ordered from TM. And they were the only Mexican option delivering that late. So I thought I'd try again. Quesadilla, burrito, rice and beans, guac.
Called an hour after they confirmed my order. Had to speak to two people. Dude swore it already left and would be there in 10…but sounded like no one made it, and I was gonna get a rush job.
It's now half an hour after that – so 1.5 hrs total – and still no food……….was about to call again….dude buzzed up.
So why the extra star?
Delivery guy was nice. Both people on the phone were nice. Food arrived hot (supporting my theory, but….) and was better than last time.
Improved food and customer service? I can chalk up the delivery time to a hiccup, and see about working my way through their menu….
