  1. It Can't handle the competition. There are ton of bakeries within a 2 block radius. The store is small and doesnt offer a ton of variety. I notice that they sell buns and drinks as well. Nothing stands out to me.  I picked up a coconut bun. Its solid but nothing special. This place doesn't do anything for me.  Come on capitalism and free market, I want to taste the best. There are better bakeries in flushing.

  2. I have only been in this tiny bakery a few times. only in the heat of summer when i cant walk any further and i am dying of thirst i may come in here for an iced drink. One thing i especially like is their mini egg cakes and freshly made waffle. No toppings or anything but like this place boasts its good for a snack. If you get the mini egg cake you eat one of those suckers and you cant stop popping them into your mouth.

I came in here to get some cakes or something for chinese new year presents. There is not a lot of selection. They had the sponge cake rolls and cookies and some breads but i ended up getting two boxes of fresh chinese egg rolls. they had a plain one and i also bought one with speckled black sesame in it. being the clumsy fool that i was while i was telling the lady what i wanted (i got distracted by the mini egg cakes and the waffles) i dropped a whole box of the sesame egg rolls. The freshly made ones are especially delicate and the plastic boxes it came in was so slippery it crashed to the floor and broke into a bunch of small pieces. I told the lady i would pay for it but she asked the staff to get more in the back and gave me a fresh box of unbroken ones- same type and everything. How awesome is that.

The place is small and you cant help but think that if you sit there the staff will just be staring at you the whole time you are there. Like closet size small. But come by if you want to grab a drink and a snack. It is never crowded and props for the great customer service.

  3. Not to be confused with the infamous Taipan Bakery (yelp.com/biz/tai-pan-bak…), Taipan Snack's recent opening earlier this year has been hindered by the constant construction awnings and relatively little exposure. In terms how they stack amongst the competition, Taipan Snack is somewhere in the middle of the dime-a-dozen Chinese bakeries and bubble tea joints along Main Street.

It's Cantonese name ("Dai Ban Siu Sik") is a colloquial nod that loosely translates to "big shot little eats." It's not hard to see the place is attempting a modern look, with it's ambiant lighting and psuedo contemporary interior. There isn't much seating as with most mini-cafes / bakeries like this, but just enough for singles or couples to sit and enjoy a bun and a drink.

Speaking of the food, the individually packaged breads are nice (keeps the "fly problem" at bay), but seem to sport a much smaller selection than some of their nearby competitors. I've had a loaf or two of their butter bread and I do enjoy their egg tarts on occasion, but each have been pricier than the average joint while not being necessarily better. The HK waffle is interesting and so are their mini cakes. Beware of the misleading signage outside that shows hot dogs and ice cream, I still have yet to see anyone order it.

I've mostly stuck to their drinks as their boba and milk teas have proved to be solid during the recent summer time heat wave.  Pricing is average and the drink sizes are about right. There are some days where they leave the door open and drinking inside is a tad stuffy due to the relatively shoddy ventilation.

Though there are improvements to be made, it's nice to a little bit of life breathing in this block again. With Duane Reed jumping the corner, the closing Joe's Bestburger (yelp.com/biz/joes-bestbu…), and the near empty offices, the only business attracting traffic is Chase Bank (yelp.com/biz/chase-bank-…). If that's not sad, I don't know what is.

  4. A satellite bakery knockoff from the original well known Taipan Bakery in Manhattan's Chinatown.  It presents some of the Cantonese staples of Chinese buns where I mainly came for a Guk6 Caa1 Siu1 Baau1 which none were avail, ergo I opt for a single Pineapple Bun at $1.10.  The Pineapple Bun was average to be flaky.  It appears to be clean and the fly problem does not visibly exist.

There minimal indoor seating on stools with a fully functional air conditioning system.  No facilities are available, it is to my belief, on premises.  Staff primary converse in Cantonese but are able to also hone Mandarin.  The cashier cannot count American Dollar in cash for my change out of a $20.00 as she administered it to me in piece mail on the counter, rather than into my hand.

Original is always best as nothing beats the original Taipan Bakery in Manhattan's Chinatown on Canal Street.
