Tandoori Chef 2

“It had been several years since I had eaten Indian cuisine, and since I'm sensitive to spicy food, couldn't remember which dishes I liked.”

“During the 12 years that I have lived in Millburn, I have yet to find an Indian Restaurant nearby.”

“Although it does take at least a solid hour for delivery, it's worth the wait and they always deliver with a smile.”

  1. We ordered delivery from here and it was excellent. I ordered the Malai Kofta. I'd had it once before from another restaurant and it was disgusting, but I wanted to give it another try because their description–Soft potato and cheese dumplings cooked in an almond butter cream sauce–sounded oh-so-good. It was excellent! We had to hit $30 on grubhub so in addition to BF's chicken something, we got samosas. This will happen again.

  2. I wasn't too familiar with the downtown Maplewood area so I came here in a whim after a book signing event around the corner and walking around to find dinner. It was a weeknight and the place wasn't too busy. I was hoping they would have dinner buffet but turn out they did not. So oh well, we ordered tandoori chicken and chicken tikka. They were ok, I've had better, but not bad either. And I kinda wish they served the rice more generously considering we ordered 2 entrees.

  3. The food is good here. There are a ton of vegan options as you would expect of an Indian restaurant. The few times I've been to this restaurant there wasn't many people. It's sort of tucked away behind the main drag of maplewood avenue.

The staff is attentive and friendly. One time they did forget my soup though. This is why we write things down. I was plenty full on my entree and appetizers anyway.

Try it out. You probably won't regret it.

  4. We went there at Saturday night. Nice vibe and high quality food. Server was nice and cool. We asked for free naans and he brought us a lot.

  5. In short, the food is good to very good, but the service is almost nonexistent. The waiters seem to hear very selectively (like every fourth request) and seem to be automatons who have no ability to understand the most innocuous requests for variations on spice-heat levels, etc.

The food also takes FOREVER to appear, and that is after it takes 15-20 minutes for the waiter to finally come to take the order. In a recovering economy, most restaurants go out of their way to provide superior service. The Tuesday night we visited Sona in late December was a busy one for Maplewood restaurants. We settled on Sona because it was cold out and there were empty tables. Now we know why.

That said, the food was tasty and well-prepared, and a decent value, although the chicken and meat dishes were long on sauce and a bit stingy on the protein.

I think any repeat business I give them would be of the takeout variety.

  6. Good but not great. Had lamb biryani and lamb sheesh kebab as well as garlic naan.  They forgot the naan and brought it after we were almost halfway through the meal. The sheesh kebab was good but the white rice not that flavorful.  The lamb biryani was ok but the rice kind of sticky and the meat too fatty. Also it wasn't that warm when it came out.  Glad to have found an Indian place in town but wish it was a bit better.
