After many years of visiting this fine establishment, they ran out of lengua for the first time!!!! Good Lord. That is and always will be my go to. When me and my gf come we don't even bother looking at the menu. 2-3 lengua tacos rapido por favor. When we feel like having some sugar, we order a large mango milk smoothie.
So yesterday I was forced to try some new things. Tried the al pastor and tripe taco. Both were good. Tripe caught me off guard though tasted like crunchy crunchy tripe (because it was deep fried). Also had the carne arsada horchata. The horchata reminded me of an arepa , I would order it again. I left happy with the whole experience even though my all time favorite was sold out. I think Yelp has promoted my secret too well. Will return to satisfy those lengua cravings.
The tacos here are really great and quite large! It's a bit hard to order if you don't know what any of the names mean so be patient with the waiters and ask questions! The inside of the place is definitely no frills, but you get what you pay for.
Oi… I feel bad giving this only 3 stars however they expanded with California bar next door and all the prices went up! The food is tasty however I don't think the pricing matches the portions… especially when you get a feast when ordering Colombian food. I'm going to stop ordering the entrees and stick to the tacos.
My family in California are adamant that they don't do Mexican food well in New York, but they haven't tried anything in London – it simply doesn't compare. Taqueria Coatzingo is authentic, delicious, and cheap. If you want fine dining, then this isn't it – during our meal we had people coming up to us asking for spare change, or trying to sell us DVDs – but it somehow just adds to the friendly, local community atmosphere and vibe. Try the lengua al vapor tacos – beef tongue served with guacamole, onions, coriander and lemon. Trust me on this one.
Very authentic place with most staff speaking Spanish only. The food was authentic and portions were good size. But the flavors were lacking or off.
Got the free chips with salsa to start. Salsa tasted a bit off but I was starving, so still had some before the food arrived.
Tried the asada, pollo, and chorizo tacos. Each one was big and came with guacamole, but not a lot of flavor in the meat.
Also had the rice and beans and Horchata. All of those were good.
This place is more of a 3.5 star spot.
.
I had this place bookmarked ever since seeing the cemita picture on seriouseats. Finally got a chance to go last week on my way into the city. I got a chicken milanesa cemita. It had breaded chicken cutlet, queso oaxaca, refried bean spread, chipotle in adobo, tomato, onion, lettuce and avocado, all packed into a fresh cemita roll. This was a thing of beauty and tasted great. God, why cant we have a place like this in CT, I'd be there twice a week. So wish I could eat my way through every torta/cemita this place has. Guess I'll just have to try and recreate at home until I can come back!
My go-to taco place in Jackson Heights for cheap, delicious and authentic Mexican food.
I don't think service is the best, but this ain't no high-class restaurant. You're getting a taco for $2.50 so don't expect waitresses to cater to your every need and hand you a tissue when you need to sneeze. You flag them down to order and to pay. I also noticed that all the waitresses are women dressed in tight shirts and pants. I guess it helps with male customers who like to oggle the ladies. Just don't undermine them – they definitely know how to run a busy restaurant.
I love the complimentary chips and salsa they give you when you sit down. It's usually warm since they continuously fry them to keep up with demands. I recommend the chicken tacos – it's basic, but it's good. The beef is not so good – a lot of fat and unchewable pieces. The gyro one is super flavorful and I heard a lot of good things about the spicy pork too.
I want to try the other dishes though. They have an extensive menu full of homemade Mexican food.
If you dine in, you get free tortilla chips with salsa. Coatzingo's tacos ($2.50 each) are pretty big & I love how each taco already comes with guacamole. But I'm still lacking flavor. I've had their tacos and torta. A lot of the times, you can't get a taste of the meat. That's probably due to the additional toppings masking it, but it makes it so difficult to figure out which taco you're eating if you get different kinds. It gets to the point that they all taste the same, since all the toppings are the same for each taco.
During my most recent trip, I ordered the torta and got the chorizo and eggs (I think it was ~$6.50). The chorizo wasn't for me. It lacked the spice and flavor that I normally enjoy. So I wouldn't get the chorizo. The torta itself was filling. It reminded me of a hamburger,
in a good way. We ordered to go and it took some time for them to cook the food, but they were super busy on a Friday night, even at 10pm. I think my party waited about 15 minutes, which is pretty quick for a busy place.
Taqueria Coatzingo can be easily accessible by train, it's 2 blocks away from the 74th St-Roosevelt Ave train stop.
