Taqueria Kermes
“Of course what adds to the very reasonable pricing is the fact that the place still has no liquor license.”
“(3) It's a little family owned place in a part of Queens that doesn't get much business, so I'd like them to do well.”
“I had the pork quesadilla and crispy shrimp taco and my hubby got a burrito and the surf and turf taco — all amazing.”

Pretty much everything we had here was fantastic. The nachos were way different from bar slop, with freshly fried chips, home marinated veggies, freshly made guacamole. The plantains y crema was even better, with super soft plantain and delicious creamy spicy dip. And three tacos: great shrimps, great fish taco, only the steak fajita style taco was less than fabulous. And after all that food, which left two hungry people unable to finish it, the bill was $26.
What a great find! Following a beer tasting in Ridgewood's Finback, we craved a burrito (okay mostly me, I heart burritos). Good thing Yelp helped us find Taqueria Kermes! We shared a burrito and got a side of guac with chips. I always love finding a good guac… and here it is, in unsuspecting Ridgewood, Queens! Such a treat 🙂
This Mexican eatery is a gem in the Ridgewood neighborhood, and I was surprised at how empty it initially was when I first walked in.
I got the Hawaiian quesadilla with pineapple, ham, and crispy shrimp. It came with the eatery's own cheese blend, and a creamy drizzle + guacamole + tomatoes on top. This dish was filling, decadent, and all-around awesome. Though it looked small, it satisfied my stomach and taste buds, for sure.
The decor of this place is well one: roughly textured red-orange walls, with blue vase decorations and small lamps hanging from the ceiling. They have group seating in the back of their restaurant, and their bathroom is well-maintained: something I always look for when I try a new restaurant or café.
Though Taqueria Kermes was empty when I walked in a bit before 8pm, there were more customers towards the end of my visit there (around 9pm), which is interesting to see on a Saturday night. But maybe that's because on the weekends, the families in Ridgewood like to spend their time elsewhere.
The staff workers were so responsive and top-notch: they seated me quickly, took effort to explain the specials, and refilled my water glass without prompting.
I am a Californian but more importantly a San Franciscan and even more importantly a former Mission District resident – the place where the burrito was born!
Untimely this place could benefit a lot from simplicity and better quality ingredients.
There were many complex and competing processed flavors. I would say this food caters to the 'southern' American palate and is not true to the simple beauty of Mexican cooking styles.

I was really surprised to find such a great taco place in Ridgewood. I ordered horchata and 3 tacos to go and it took about 10 mins.
Surf and Turf Tacos – This was by far the best one out of the 3 tacos I got. It's got steak and shrimp in it and the sauce was divine. The shrimp were big and juicy as well.
Carne Asada Tacos – My second favorite, the steak was tender and juicy, this was the sauciest taco out of all 3.
Carnitas Tacos – This one was a bit dry probably because there's no pico de gallo in it. The pork was really tender though.
Horchata wasn't too shabby, could've been a little more milkier.
All in all, not bad for Ridgewood.
Been here twice during my lunch break and even though the tacos are good, they are not the best I've had. Great service but a long wait for both food and drinks, even when we were the only ones in the restaurant. I got the little meats, grilled steak and shepherd chicken tacos, cost me a roughly $10 for all 3 tacos. Their fries with chipotle mayo was on point, I will come back to try more items on their menu and maybe have a chance to sit in their patio before it starts getting cold.
I had a very interesting experience with Taqueria Kermes on Friday night. I've always heard great things about the food here. I was in Ridgewood and hopped on Seamless to place an order here. It was a bit after 8 PM and Seamless said that the order was received by the restaurant and should be delivered to me within 30-45 minutes. After over an hour and noticing that it was approaching their delivery cut off time, I called the restaurant to see what was going on. After putting me on a hold quite a few times, they told me that they never received the order. I was hungry, tired and irritated so I hung up with them and contacted Seamless to get my money refunded. 10 minutes later the restaurant called me and said that they just got my order and just got the notice to cancel it. They were very apologetic and offered to still make my order even though they were closing shortly. I agreed because I was hangry and because they said they would have the food to me within 15 minutes. That wasn't a lie! It was delivered in lightning speed!
The food itself was excellent! Not just because I was starving. It was really spot on!! The hand cut fries with chipotle mayo were so delish!! You can tell they were fresh. Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Love that they left the skin on. They were huge! The chipotle mayo was amazing. Good spice kick, creamy and just fabulous. I wanted more! The Vegetarian Quesadilla was the best quesadilla that I've ever had! Wonderful amount of hearty vegetables. No filler veggies here either. Delicious, grilled and sauteed pieces of eggplant, zucchini, etc. The toasted quinoa was an interesting addition to the quesadilla. It was huge and was good enough to last for two meals. The guacamole and pico de Gallo that it came with were great. You can totally tell that it's freshly made. The veggie taco was good as well, but my heart was set on that quesadilla! Annoying experience but it turned out to be for the best because I found my new quesadilla place! Taqueria Kermes went above and beyond to keep a customer and to keep that customer satisfied. Kudos! I'll be back for more.
Kermes The Frog owns this place, and the tacos here are the exact reason why he was able to turn Miss Piggy into a, well, piggy. And I'm talking about the food kind of piggy, of course.
What to get: Fish Taco
What else: I love fish tacos. I love eating fish tacos. Please give me fish tacos. 😉
Actually, I have mixed feelings about Kermes. There's bad and there's good, so let's start with the good.
(1) The Fish Taco was absolutely delicious. Piping hot. Juicy. Greasy. Delectable. Probably the best fish taco I've had in NYC.
(2) The service was friendly, and the people are actually Latin which is always a good sign.
(3) It's a little family owned place in a part of Queens that doesn't get much business, so I'd like them to do well.
Now for the bad stuff.
(1) The shrimp taco was very disappointing. I would certainly never get it again.
(2) I found the prices to be a little too high. My two tacos were closer to $10 than $5 which I found a little shocking. The Fish Taco was excellent, but still.
(3) The wait time was extremely long, so don't come here if you're in a hurry. I ordered by phone and still waited at least 15 mins.
The bottom line is, I'd recommend their Fish Taco to anyone, but definitely not the Shrimp. Since, as promised, I always rate my places based on the best items, and based on taste, then I'll give Kermes The Frog a 5-star, but with reservations… that it's not one of my fave places in town.
And I'm glad it's named after the frog, and not big-haired people (Permes), little writhing creatures (Wormies), tinier writhing creatures that make babies (Spermies), or worst of all – Herpes. Because nobody wants that. And nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition. Or the Mexican one, for that matter. Comprendez?
