Subpar Chinese food. I got chicken lo mein and chicken broccoli there once on my way home and was thoroughly disappointed. Bland, tasteless. Did not even fulfill my Chinese food craving. Never again. I did not get sick, though, so that's a plus.
If you want Chinese food in this area I would instead recommend Empire Express.
This is my go to stop for "I'm-drunk-and-hungry-and need food now!" type of moments.
So many times, my boyfriend would wake up and see empty chinese food containers on the kitchen table and he'll know I made a pit stop to Taste of China along my way home from the train station.
I'm just a stickler for the beef and broccoli- they make the beef so moist and slightly chewy and the broccoli nice and crunchy. Best thing is they can cook that dish in less than 5 minutes on the spot – not microwaved or anything like that.
Keep feeding me that beef and broccoli and I will be a happy drunk.
I was pleasantly surprised by this fast food Chinese place. On my way to work from the Second Annual Kings County Fiber Festival and needing some real sustenance, I popped in this to place to order some shrimp mei fun. It was surprisingly good, with a generous portion of noodle and many small shrimp, not the miniature ones you often find in this dish. The cabbage, shredded pepper and chives were all crunchy and fresh. They cooked it with curry and some chili per my request and contrary to what I expected, was not so greasy. I would try this place again if in the nabe, and probably do takeout and carry the food to the lovely park by the Old Stone House. The restaurant does have three large tables and feels quite spacious due to the huge glass windows on both sides of the corner. It is also clean but lacking in any ambience. Hey, it's cheap Chinese takeout with the bonus of sweet, friendly, accommodating service so if you want the Per Se vibe, go dine there!
This was the first Chinese Restaurant I checked out since moving to Park Slope after living 29 years in Chinatown (Manhattan). I had little expections as I kind of simply assumed their "Szechuan Hunan & Cantonese" was nothing more than Americanized fare made by Fujianese people. I was right.
Ladybugs and germs, get ready for a treat because I'm gonna teach you cats what Chinese food should NOT be. Fried Rice should be stored in one of those large rice cookers to keep warm – not exposed to the air. This explains why your rice seems icky. ( e-fried moist rice is better than re-fried dry). Egg rolls (and the fried rice) should have plenty of roast pork chunks. Their egg rolls have nothin but cabbage.
If you MUST come here simply for convenience sake, try the egg foo young with Brown or White rice (avoid fried rice like the H1V1 virus). Chicken with Brocolli is safe. Soup is safe, but expect high amounts of corn starch in your egg drop.
It gets an extra star for portions and price. For 50cents to a dollar more for slightly better quality Chinese food, go up one Avenue to 5th Ave.
