Came here for a group bday dinner and it was a good experience. The food isn't cheap here but if you come for the group experience its worth it. We paid the $25 for the show which wasn't the bad just not great. The best thing about the night was the dance floor and live entertainment. They charge a $10 cork fee for liquor here which is great. We bought several bottles of wine and vodka and had a good time.
For food their is a mushroom and potato appetizer and the lamb osobucco which were both outstanding to me. The lamb is a very generous portion that can easily be shared by two.
The restaurant is also on the boardwalk which made it a plus that we got to hang out at the beach after the dinner.
You come here for the view, not the food.
The latter is standard Russian fare of average quality. We shared two four-course meals of roast chicken roulade, harcho, and pozharsky cutlet, French fries; and Ukrainian borscht, lox and vareniki with potatoes. We also split some escargots. The strongest dish was the borscht.
Sidebar: There was a stick of rock candy in our napkin holder. No idea how or why….
I think I'll move this back down to a 4.
Harcho/mushrooms with potatoes are still excellent.
Decent selection of classic Russian cuisine. Their rye bread is good. The potato and mushroom dish is tasty but not the best one I've had. The greek salad is refreshing. Vodka is served in a carafe with lovely long stemmed shot glasses. The best thing about this place is the dessert coffee. It comes with a stick of rock candy. Delightful. The second best thing is the sunset over the boardwalk and the beach.
Overall they're not the most tasty Russian food I've ever had but they make up for it with location and the view. People watching is definitely possible here in the outdoor table setting.
Two Words: Russian Opulence
Growing up with a Russian parents is not easy for a completely assimilated American. My parents never understood the concept of just going out to dinner with my friends.
Common Questions/Answers (all in Russian of course):
1. Would there be a show after?
2. Would someone be performing?
3. All you and your friends like to do is eat
Well, the last part is definitely true. For me, eating is a social experience in itself. However, the answer is usually a big fat "NOPE" to questions 1 and 2. Enter: Tatiana. The quintessential Russian restaurant where you can expect food AND a show.
Last Saturday was the first time I had ever been to the infamous Tatiana in Brighton Beach. Dinner was at 8:00pm. Our group had a private table in the back. It was good because we had our own space; bad because we didn't have a direct view of the show.
Dinner started coming out at around 8:30/9:00. Course after course of common Russian delicacies…everything from salad to caviar to fish to meats. Towards the end of the dinner, there was a show on the main dance floor. It was like a downgraded version of a Vegas show. Which was perfectly fine. Food was still coming out after the show, until around 10:30. Then of course came coffee (which was so watered down) and dessert (Napoleon, which was average).
The service was efficient. Our plates were changed often.
The food is good, not great. Nothing was memorable. However, there is A LOT of it if that's what you're looking for. Expect to spend around $150 pp…especially for prime time Saturday night. You're basically paying for the amount of food and the show.
I think you can bring your own liquor. But that may depend on the package. I'm sure their in-house liquor is extremely overpriced.
That being said, I would go at least once for the experience.
Where do we start!
I've never had such a bad experience.
Located on the strip of the coney island beach you would think on a Saturday afternoon that you'd have to wait at least 20 minutes to get a seat, exciting right! Wrong.
I discovered shortly thereafter why this place sucks, which means its empty most of the time.
Checking out the menu 4 pages long with everything and anything possible on it, already knew that something will go wrong. Whenever a restaurant has a huge menue something is bound to GO wrong.
I ordered a cheesecake for dessert but the waitress said they do not have cheesecake today! She recommended I try the cheese blintze, which I love.
Waiting waiting 20 minutes later I ask for an update! Well its made from scratch might take another 10 minutes. Well 30 minutes later I picked myself up and left with out my blintz.
As a frequent guest at restaurants whether via yelp or private RSVP I've seen many places succeeding just by listening to customers complaints and accept criticism as a way to help you better serve and hopefully make more money.
(1) a very successful restaurant keeps the menu small with 3-4 appetizers 2-3 salads 5-6 main.
The reason is so that you should never have to say to a customer sorry we don't have that today.
(2) food should never take more then 15 minutes from ordering to serving. Once you're over 15 minutes you have lost the customer and majority will not return.
(3) a small menue will help a customer choose without all the confusion and will make sure the kitchen always has all the ingredients which will help the staff get the food out in less then 15 minutes.
I am looking forward to seeing some of the changes invite us back once you've made some changes and will be more then happy to invite some of my fellow yelpers to review.
PS a restaurant on the strip should not have to have 4 guys standing on the boardwalk trying to get people interested. Such a highly visible place and one of the only high end eateries you shouldn't have to have anyone selling, hopefully you will make the changes I recommended and you will see a huge difference .
Good Russian food but they sure do charge a lot for what it is. Was here on a weekend for brunch. Me and the lady sat outside on the boardwalk and enjoy some, pelmeni, salad olivier
beef tongue, and chicken shish kebab. Besides the tongue, all of the dishes were authentic and delicious. But the prices are on another level compared to all the other Russian restaurants in the area. I guess they charge for the ocean view and their well known name. Will be back again. but only when I'm down to drop that cashola.
If you would like to taste genuinely prepared Russian cuisine, dine at Tatiana's while people watching on the boardwalk. I have been frequenting this establishment for many years. They have a vast and delicious menu. Every appetizer and entree is bursting with flavor and blessed with a touch of Russian magic. For newbies, I recommend the Mushroom Julienne, Caviar with crepes, Chicken Kebabs, pan fried potatoes, any and all the Vareniki for starters. You really can't go wrong with any of the items on the menu. The variety of beautifully prepared whole fish, all delicious. The servers are all Russian speaking, come from all over Russia, and are happy to recommend a dish for you to try based on what you like. There is nothing like enjoying a cold brew on a hot summer day at Tatiana's on the boardwalk. Don't forget, Tatiana's is one of the last Russian restaurant's that still offer an exotic night show on the weekends, you can BYOB and listen to live music followed by a performance put on by exotic dancers. Being a native of South Brooklyn comes with its perks and walking over to the beach and having brunch at Tatiana's on the boardwalk is one of them.
