Have come here a few times and gotten a different experience not always bad but not always good. They have really good Multigrain pancakes so sweet you don't even need syrup their eggs are really good as well and cooked to order. This place is always a little crowded so just be aware of that a head of time. I have also had steak here which they cooked to order even if you tell them to make it super rare :). The thing I did not like about this place however is their wait staff. They don't speak English that we'll or at least the two that I have had. I had to repeat my order multiple times and even then it got messed up because they couldn't understand me. It's annoying but I understand it everyone is trying to make a living just be forwarned that it may happen so bare with them and try not to get upset.
When I picture how a diner should look and feel, Tenafly Classic Diner fits exactly how I imagined! The atmosphere definitely exudes the classic diner charm that you see in the movies [reminds me of the diner in Back to the Future].
The food here felt less greasy than the typical diner and I was impressed by the selection of items on the menu. Overall, a tasty and fun diner experience, definitely worth the visit.
Bright clean diner in Tenafly! Decent menu and decent waitstaff.
I had a cheese burger with fries which was grass fed beef. Tasted good. My wife had a clam chowder which was ok too.
Service was quick and pretty friendly. The place was pretty busy for 9:30pm and probably lots of regulars. We would come back if in this area.
I cam in and had a salad here before heading to the Tenafly field for softball practice i was coaching. The place is super clean and the staff is friendly and timely. I certainly want to go back to try this place out with a few people and enjoy the experience. Their salad was delicious but over dressed. I'm planning on going back with a few friends to check out some other menu items to give a better review and get a better understanding on the place. I'll be back for sure, good experience overall just can't rate much past the salad.
The Penne Vodka (order it minus the alcohol) is simply divine. I've never had Penne Vodka quite as good as it is at this diner. I mean there's only one other person who can cook better pink sauce but this is a close second and it reminds me of her.
It's a bit pricey but well worth it. The portion is large and if I have some Italian or garlic bread with it, IT IS OVER. The service is great. I enjoyed coming here. It's a cute little corner diner you can spend time sitting in and talk the night away.
I'd eaten here years ago when I first visited my boyfriends hometown. It was OK then. We ate here again last time we were in Tenafly and there was a remarkable drop.
Food was OK. We had sandwiches. Fries were barely edible, but I'm not a fry lover to begin with so I'll admit I have a bias against them. (Potatoes in general…I just don't get them). My sandwich was forgettable.
The service..that's what made the trip memorable, and not in a good way. There were very few people in the diner when we went, and so we thought that the service would be reasonable. It seemed like it was everyone's first day on the job. Or maybe they decided that just for that day the kitchen staff and wait staff would trade jobs. Just to see what it was like…
The waiter was so incredibly slow. it wasn't just us, the few people around us had to ask him to do various things for them (get the check, get ketchup etc)…That was infurating, especially when he was standing around chatting with other staff. I didn't hear the conversation but just seeing him stand there and chat while people were getting antsy..It bothered me.
Then, at the end, he dropped off someone else's credit card at our table. Yes…someone else's! That someone is pretty lucky we're honest people! BUT when we tried to tell the waiter, he insisted it was ours, as if we didn't know our own name!! Thankfully, we were able to figure it out with the help of the other customer who overheard us trying to tell us it wasn't our card, and we ensured it got back into the rightful owner's pocket.
Good portions and cheap food. But it's not enough to get me to want to go back next time I'm in Tenafly.
I'm surprised it took me this long to check out this place since it's walking distance from my church and a fan-favorite of a lot of my church members. But I finally got to eat here….TWICE in one day!
So first my lunch experience….
Upon walking in, I was impressed with how clean the place seemed to be and liked that it was well-lit.
I got their Mexican eggs benedict. Benedicts are one of my favorite breakfast dishes to get at diners and I must say that the eggs benedict here did not disappoint. The Mexican benedict came with chorizo and some vegetables. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the hollandaise sauce was delicious. I enjoyed the chorizo but only wish they included more vegetables. I thought they english muffin could have been a little bit more toasty. One complaint I have is that I asked for my fries to be well-done but they were clearly not crispy at all when they came out. The chili on top of the fries was a nice touch though for this Mexican eggs benedict dish.
I ended up back here for dinner that same night….
I got their "lite" burger which was supposed to be a burger with mozzarella cheese, mozzarella sticks, marinera sauce and pepperoni with disco fries on the side. I specifically requested that my fries be well-done, light cheese, and gravy on the side. The waiter seemed to understand since he repeated my instructions back to me. So my entree comes out and immediately I see gravy poured all over the fries and spilling onto the burger-side of the plate. Fail. I take a bite of the fries and they're incredibly soggy. Fail. And of course they use yellow cheese and tons of it too. Personally I'm a fan of white cheese on my disco fries. Maybe the burger can redeem this dish. I take a bite into the burger and the beef tastes great but there is something missing. I take apart my burger and low and behold, no marinera sauce. The mozzarella sticks are super soggy (gross) and the pepperoni is semi-cold and lifeless. This burger was great in theory but terribly executed. Any chef with some sense would have put together this burger by cooking the items all separately and putting them together at the end but it was clear all the ingredients were piled on top of the beef and just popped into the over to heat up and melt the cheese. Everyone knows mozzarella sticks are the best when they're crunchy. So deep-fry them and put them on at the end! *sigh
Service was not that great. The waiter came by our table once and I found myself flagging the waiter down (he was just sitting at a table and chilling over a plate of fries) for more water. When I asked for hot sauce, it took about 10 minutes for it to come out. You get the picture.
Overall, I think this place can be great. More consistency and care in their food preparation can go a long way. The servers need to be more on top of their game. The prices are definitely more expensive than other diners I frequent in the Northern NJ area which could be justified if they could execute their food better, but slow service and poor final food products don't warrant higher prices.
Wow can't believe I have never reviewed this place! Especially because I used to live right next door and basically lived here late nights and weekends.
Always great food. I've been there for breakfast, lunch, dinner, late pm and in between. Always good service, good location, ample parking, good servings/portions etc.
Summer- outside seating -very cute
Chicken Alfredo- yum
Salmon Salad and basically ALL salads-YUM
Paella-yes…paella (not even sure if on the menu) is absolutely delicious… They have latin cooks and boy can they cook!
Breakfast-yummers!
Cocktails- Haven't had drinks there (something about ordering liquor at a diner?really? Not for me)
Desserts- haven't really had them. Recall a cheesecake-did not blow my mind
Anyhow-cute place, good food, good location and town- definitely a must try!
