We ended up coming here because the Chinese place we wanted to go to was closed (we will still try it, however). Well, what a GREAT choice. The food was so tasty & nicely presented. The service was excellent too- the staff was attentive (but not overly so), friendly & accommodating. In fact, even though I ordered MILDLY SPICY, my rice dish was really too spicy for me & they offered to take it back & redo it, which they did. My husband had the sautéed fish filet with young peppercorns which was very flavorful with intense spiciness. The decor & atmosphere were also very pleasant. Looking forward to going back! Bravo to the owners. Nice job!
Great spot for lunch. Lunch specials started at 6.95 and included an app and lunch. For $2 more you get soup too. Service was very friendly and the restaurant is clean and modern.
Opening a Thai restaurant is like cheating. It's basically the same ingredients in different configurations, and it's simple and cheap. Thai 86 adheres to the same principles that have made Thai food a hit in the US, with a lot of the popular staples (pad thai, green curry, summer rolls, etc.).
The restaurant itself is actually massive. It extends all the way to the back, and the decor is surprisingly nice for the block it's located on. When we went, we were only one of two tables. To be fair, it was a bit late for dinner and they did seem to do a lot of Seamless deliveries.
As for the food, we started out with the summer rolls which were super bland and the tom yum hot & sour soup. The soup was pretty good (better than similar ones I've had in Park Slope) and it was loaded with a bunch of veggies and shrimp.
I was with my parents, and we shared a pineapple fried rice. I thought it was pretty good, especially with the cashews and raisins for texture. But then again, pretty hard to screw up fried rice.
Here's where they went wrong though. I ordered the spicy drunken noodles with beef, and what came out was chicken. The ONLY OTHER table in the place got my order (we ordered first and they got the noodles first, which was a red flag). We told the waiter, and he was very apologetic. But come on. There were only two tables and they managed to mix them up. The noodles themselves were actually pretty good and they didn't skimp on the spiciness.
Lastly, we went with one of their specials – black pepper duck. It was a huge dish with tons of veggies. Lots of duck in it as well. Great flavors and went well with rice. Interestingly enough, they only had this dish listed on their Chinese-only print-out specials menu. Totally worth asking for it if it's available, because it was the best dish we had.
The other thing worth mentioning is that with the purchase of any entree, you can get half price Singha's ($2.50 instead of $5), so that's quite a deal.
I'm glad Bay Ridge is ever expanding in its food options, and I'd definitely come back. Docking one star for the service and the lame summer rolls though.
*Delivery Order* The food took forever to get to my house, but I know that's not the restaurant's fault! We even called and asked and the lady was nice. She explained that our food was taken out by seamless and should be there soon.
I ordered chicken pad thai – my favorite. It was warm and delicious! Lots of flavor and a huge portion. 2 noodle dishes = $20 – great prices.
We will be ordering again!
Delivery took 70 minutes on a quoted 30-45. Food was decent but nothing was spicy, even dishes which were ordered extra spicy.
I can finally get amazing Thai food without having to go into Williamsburg or go to Queens!
My hubby and I decided to give this place a try one Saturday afternoon for lunch, and we were pretty amazed at the affordable price. We started off sitting next to a bamboo wall divider, and gazed at the wall of framed Thai eats with tempting pictures and explanations of their contents and origin. A really nice touch.
We ordered the standard Tom Yum and Tom Kha soups, and they were both spicy and tasty, but I was partial to the Tom Kha more. They had healthy pieces of chicken mixed with the vegetables which is something rare in itself. Good go!
Next, I ordered my favorite – Drunken Noodles, and my hubby tried the Pad See Ew. Excellent choices for both! MY drunken noodles were spicy with a fair amount of shrimps, and the portion was perfect. The smell was just as good as it tasted, and I was pretty happy about it.
We've come back and tried the Pad Thai which was also pretty great.
We'll be back for the Thai Iced teas and to further explore your menu!
