Thai Rock

“The jet ski operation is well oiled and safe with a large area to play in and no more than 3 jet skis out at a time.”

“Pad see Yew and Massaman Curry were flavorful and fresh, a nice warm lunch on a rainy day.”

“The dumplings were amazing and peanutty & the curry puffs were flaky and had bigger potato hunks than other restaurants, which we enjoyed.”

  1. I don't know anywhere else that you can get sloshed (responsibly, of course), listen to a decent cover band, eat a lot of delicious Thai food, and then go jet-skiing. What's not to like?

My cousin hosted her rehearsal dinner here, and no one anywhere near me had any cause for complaint. I suppose the band made it tough to talk to each other, but there's alcohol (lychee martinis, Lucky Buddha beers, anything else you can really think of), so that doesn't really matter.

I must admit that I didn't actually order any of the food myself (or pay for it, for that matter), but I ate everything (this is my MO), and it was all quite tasty. There was plenty of variety (fish, beef, chicken, vegetables, rice, noodles…), except that there did seem to be a common theme of peanuts or peanut sauce in just about everything. I dug it, but it did spark a conversation about what happens to a Thai child born with a peanut allergy…we decided that particular subset of the population probably died off long ago, which is totally not too morbid a discussion to be having as two people embark on a life together.

    Be warned:

    1. There was a decent amount of heat in the curry, and the papaya salad (som tam) as well. I imagine they can make it seriously spicy if they so choose.

    2. If you host a party of any kind, they will likely give you entirely too much food. My end of the table would've had a substantial amount of leftovers if I hadn't eaten 23 curry puffs to my face. I blame my grandmother for not pulling her weight. I suppose she may be a full foot shorter than me, and about 70 lbs. lighter, but that's really no excuse.

    3. The parking situation is not great, especially since it's about as far away as you can go and still be in NYC, so you're probably going to have to drive.

  2. Straight up solid Thai food with a KILLER view. It sits on the bay, right on a boat dock. I think you can rent jet skis from it. If you're lucky enough to get there for sunset, you won't be disappointed. Also, there was a pretty decent band on the night we went.

Apps: Roti and massamun curry and curry puffs were solid.

We had the chicken pad thai- seriously good. The noodles are tangy and saucier than your standard pad thai, but made for a really tasty meal. the chicken also was so incredibly moist.

The Tom Yum fried rice was also banging. I don't really know what's in that, but heck I looked forward to eating every bit of it. The portions are also huge so you will have left overs.

I would have rated it a 5- but parking is kind of horrible and the tofu was a bit over-fried and spongy. I'll still be back though!

  3. We had a great time here.  Came for a rather large birthday party of 50 people and the staff did a great job of keeping every one filled with food and drinks.  Location can't be beat and if you come during sun down you get an amazing view if you are sitting outside.

    Likes:
    – Location is right on the water facing the bridge
    – Outdoor seating is ample
    – Indoor seating is ample as well
    – Nice out door bar
    – Live music during the summer is good
    – Its connected to a dock where you can rent a jet ski to take around the bay

    Food:
    – We tried so many different things from the menu which most were good.  The salmon stands out to be the best we tried from this evening.

Overall we had a great time here and will definitely come back before the summer is over.

  4. If you're looking for a nice escape from the city life and city pace, this place might just help you with one of their Mai-Tais.  However, that might be about it. Their food is sub-par and their service is about the same. After being here 3 times; my order has been forgotten, wrong or cold.

However, not everything about this place is bad. Their location is great, they have a a huge outdoor seating area and they always have a fun crowd/live entertainment.

Worth a try if you're driving by.

  5. This bar/restaurant gets a 3 with the help of the bar. If it wasn't for the amazingly sweet Gabrielle,  this place would get a 1 star. We ordered spicy mussels  (Thai spicy) and shrimp dumplings. My boyfriend and I had one bite of the mussels and spit it out. Yuck!!  The shrimp dumplings were also really fishey.
If it wasn't for the amazing drinks the bartender made and her pleasant behaviour then this place would be a 1 star.

  6. This place was really good. I always order the same Thai dish everywhere I go the pad se ew. My only complaint is that this place is so much more expensive than any other Thai place that I go to. It's good food, but I'm not sure if it's better than elsewhere where it's cheaper. It is a nice place to enjoy cocktails out on the outdoor space with some friends.

  7. After a multitude of lefts and a few illegal U-ies we arrived only to stand in a stifling, musty waiting hallway amongst other sandy beach goers..

After a bar spot was assumed, the rest if the experience was one of my best Rockaway nights I can recall.

Pounding Scorpions and Mai Tai's while absorbing the sunset as the live music began to play was a wonderful moment. I wish it could have lasted forever.

Back inside — the Shrimp Pad Thai was served up with an unnecessary delay apology.
The flavor was tremendous and the portion was heaping, easily enough for two. Very good quality, plentiful shrimps were the size of a baby's fist which, as with their noodle counterparts kept the flavor train a Rollin'.

Sitting at the bars far end I was fortunate to chat with Boy, the bartender who was producing some of the most beautiful, works of art — traditional Thai adult beverages.
Being the fortunate recipient of some extra over pours and mixes, I sampled away without hesitation.

This was a wonderful dining experience and my highest recommendation is stamped upon Thai Rock.

  8. I am in love ! I found this place in an article about the top outdoor places to eat. This one ranked #3. When in Rome why not check it out? Parking is extremely difficult in the summer. It took me at least 30 minutes of circling around before I found something close by. The restaurant itself does have a parking lot but it's small and fits no more than 8 cars. It's considered public parking and folks sausage in their cars like sardines. You will then need to provide your phone number to the hostess in case your blocking someone that needs to leave before you.

Now let's get to the good stuff. When I walked in there was a line. If you don't have a reservation be ready to wait. The place is huge. There is an indoor dinning area that can possibly seat up to 80 -100 people with an equally enormous bar. Vibrant colors, appealing to the eye, giving you the feel that you have been transported to a Caribbean island some place. Behind the indoor dinning area you will find an outdoor deck area facing Jamaica Bay. Possibly seating for another 50 folks with equally large bar like the one inside.

I opted for a bar seat so I can take in all the happenings behind it. I love to watch bartenders create drinks. My choice of seating was perfect. Boy was our bartender, as he mentioned to me, was in his creative kingdom. He was whisking fruity concoctions every 5 seconds. Each one was more beautiful than the next. He added special touches of rose petals, different fruit garnish, making each drink very attractive to the eye. But the best part was the taste. This man really knew his craft and was very generous on the portions of alcohol. You actually paid $10 for an alcoholic beverage and it was very well deserved. No overflow of juice, and inept mixing proportions like some other local bars that try to stiff you. I order the lychee mojito. It was a tall glass, original mojito flavor with right amount of mints and limes. Beautifully topped with two lychee fruits on top. Flavors were outstanding. I also had a margarita and a frozen mango matti. Yummmnessss all the way. I had a heavy lunch so  I was not overly hungry deserving of a full course menu.

I did want to try my favorite Thai dish – pad Thai. This was the test. Drinks  have been outstanding to this point. It's a Thai place and if  they can't get pad Thai right then it's a deal breaker. Of course they outdid themselves in the food department as well! The portion of pad Thai was sufficient to feed two. It was rationed out appropriately. Peanuts, scallions, bean sprouts, the protein and the thai noodles all in their own section separated waiting for you to mix them in together. When I started mixing I noticed the Thai noodles had additional sauce that was just the right amount to infuse the flavor to all the different additional items that would be added in eventually. The sauce was a dark, soy based with plenty of flavor and kick. I was very impressed. This has to be by far one of my now too favorite Thai places. I can't wait to return on a hungry stomach and try more items from the food menu.

As an added bonus on weekends they have live band. The band started playing at 8pm and their voices were amazing. The restaurant had such a great setup that even if you sat inside you can still hear the band play. I will definitely be back real soon!
