Thavma

“The best time to go is during the warmer months so that you can sit out on the patio.”

“We also ordered a Saganaki (we've decided the Broiled Feta there wins by a small margin), and my wife ordered an Eggplant Tower special that she really liked (I don't do eggplant).”

“Another noteworthy dish is the chicken brokola — the sauce is simply amazing!”

  1. From a TAKEOUT LUNCH standpoint, I would NOT ORDER AGAIN.

Granted, this may not be a true representation of all that thavma has to offer and doesn't account for dine in decor, service, and ambience, I will surely not be getting take out again any time soon.

    And here's why…..

    – 7 spread combo: Uninspired- other than the bruchestta, which was above average. the other 6 spreads were mediocre, lacking flavor/bland
    –  greek salad: i judge my greek salad by quality of feta, this was also uninspired.  a bit dry, salty but w/o complexity of flavors, just salt.  a bit too crumbly.  the veggies were ok
    – lamb and orzo: uninspired, the orzo was overcooked, def too soft.  the tomato based sauced was also too watery and bland.  the lamb texture itself was aight, tenderbut some pieces dry and of course bland as was the dish as a whole.  at least the serving size was big if you like lots of poorly made orzo.
    – lamb kabob: good char on lamb, but not very tender. uninspired.  fries was soggy but that's probably because it was takeout and had time to steam in the container.
    – mousaka: probably the best dish of the entire order: still uninspired.  sauce was good, well cooked dish but it seemed liked something i could just get out of the glass counter at a grocery store.

Overall: uninspired: maybe this is good for jersey Mediterranean food? it's probably better dine in and the pictures of the venue look nice, so i would still give the restaurant another try dining in…for dinner.

  2. Yep, I'm a fan! Been going here for a few months now and thoroughly enjoy the food. When I first went here, I expected it to be more like a Chinese take out place, but it's a cute little restaurant above the shops downtown. They also have outdoor seating in the warmer months which is a bonus.

The apps and entrees are fantastic! Huge fan of the tzataki and hummus, as well as a delicious eggplant tower that they are currently serving as part of a seasonal menu. Ever since I had it, I want to eat it every day, seriously. Chicken entrees and the shish kabobs have yet to disappoint.

Portions are pretty big, so go there hungry and don't fill up too much on extra apps or the warm pita they serve, though that will be hard to do! There are so many menu options, even people who are not totally into Greek food will find something to appease their palette. Bring some beer or wine, as they're BYOB here.

  3. This has been on my "bookmark to try" list for a long time.  I am glad to find a sit down greek restaurant in the area.
We dined on the terrace as it was a beautiful evening.  Service in the beginning was really good, but the attentiveness quickly went down hill as the place filled.  However, the server was always pleasant.  We waited a very long time (30+ minutes) between our app and main meal.  Annoyingly other patrons seated after us were finished before our food ever arrived.  It seemed they were severely understaffed.
The food was good and we will come again.  The chicken kebab was not the most flavorful and the beef kabab was teetering on burnt.  Both were dry.  This could have something to do with it possibly sitting under the heat lamp for a long time!  Falafel app was okay and greek sausage was different.  The Pita was good adn the greek side salad was great.

  4. Consistently good food with excellent service. Tonight four of us dined for about $100 with entrees and shared apps of roasted beets, hummus and baba ganoush with pita bread. This BYOB has a good selection of  fresh seafood, salads and meats. Our entrees included snapper with lobster mashed potatoes, moussaka, lamb with orzo and lamb chops with roasted Brussel sprouts.  All were excellent. Each entrée came with a small Greek salad. I have been here many times and the food never disappoints.  They have a small dessert menu with traditional Greek pastries as well.

  5. Solid take-out Greek/Mediterranean option in town center in Livingston where there seems to be a shortage of good ethnic cuisine options. We have been ordering in from this place for years both when it was part of the mini-chain It's Greek to Me and now as Thavma. Generally, the olive-oil brushed pita is tasty and piping hot, the Greek salad is solid and the few staple entrees we get are well seasoned. The octopus appetizer is fantastic, and the sautéed spinach is a tasty side dish. We also opt for the chicken fresco and the grilled seafood combination or lamb and orzo. Both are good…occasionally, the shrimp or lamb comes a bit overcooked but overall, these entrees are good options, especially when you have a craving for take out and all the options in the area seem to be a derivation of Italian and Chinese. The only salad we consistently find average is the village salad, aka Shepard salad, cucumbers, tomatoes, mint and parsley…..it is always just overdosed with tomatoes and not well balanced with enough cucumber and feta and seasoning.

For sure, a solid take-out place and a nice casual option for al fresco dining on the patio in the summer…and it is BYO!
