The Chocolate Room

“The brownie sundae is my number one choice and I pair it with either a glass of red wine or when I want to overindulge-classic hot chocolate.”

“I also had their house-made Sumatran coffee ice cream.”

“I like that the chai latte wasn't too sweet as my banana split was more than enough sugar for me lol.”

  1. I used to live across from The Chocolate Room on Court St… It was never good.. I'm sorry to admit this – but it reminded me of the bland, boring, "American" palate – unrefined flavors, mild, lack of spices and substance, lots of sugar.

I was bored real quick – and never returned after 2007.

Fast forward to this weekend. Friend was visiting… and wanted a gluten free dessert. They had one (it was real bad, she eventually got rid of it). Guy behind counter convinced me that the three layer chocolate cake, that they are famous for, was divine.

It was SHIT ON A PLATE. Catered to and for those w/ European palates. I grew up on nuance and spice and flavor.

I am SO SICK OF servers in NYC who insist that their "chocolate cake" or "chocolate volcano bomb cake" is good. They ALL SUCK. All of them. I have tried way too many to my chagrin.

At this point, I will not trust folks who love bland, hegemonic, (dare I say ethnocentric) food with my palate (i.e. if you think Hershey's Chocolate is actual chocolate).

  2. This place is incredible any time of the year. I have been here several times and it never lets me down. The chocolate ice cream is some of the best I have ever had in my life. The hot fudge, again, best I have ever had in my life. Goes without saying, anything ice cream related is delicious; milkshakes, banana splits, sundaes. The hot chocolate is out of this world. The chocolate almond cake is good, a little dry. The flourless chocolate cake is unreal. The chocolate layer cake is good, again, a little dry. The chocolates are amazing. The brownies and cookies are so damn good. The decor inside is out fashioned soda shop with a little bit of a Parisian flair. The servers are all lovely. I never had a bad experience here. This place gets packed on the weekends so keep that in mind. Just love this place so much. Can't rave about enough. It's a bit dangerous that I live so close to it!

  3. Oh Chocolate Room. I was there with you in the fledgling times when you were housed in a humble tiny space on 5th Ave. I've followed you to Cobble Hill and to your big new space up the block on 5th. Things have certainly changed. And not for the better.
This was once my go to spot for dessert anytime I had family or friends from out of town. We were even known for coming in 2-3 nights in a row during these visits. Service has always been very good, with a few mediocre times. The desserts are much the same, but over the years I have noticed a marked decline in quality of preparation, especially in the garnish stage. More on that later.
After my most recent visit I don't think I'll return. We came at peak hour, 9pm on a Saturday evening. It was packed. Some seats opened up at the bar and we opted for them having never sat at the bat before. Huge mistake. What we witnessed there was shocking. The young lady at the garnish station was apparently having a rough time of it. She was throwing things, including the ice cream scoop into the water bath nearby and splashing water, and basically acting like a brat (no eye contact with anyone, no speaking, etc) We watched her microwave chocolate cakes to oblivion and stick her finger into them (gloved of course) multiple times to "check" the temperature, she did the same thing with the crepes (the special that night). Her attitude and actions certainly left us feeling unappreciated as patrons. But, what shocked us as much as her actions was the overuse and abuse of the microwave. I mean, does chocolate cake really need to be microwaved? My mother ordered this and the young lady microwaved it until the frosting was melting into gooy on the plate, and then of course she served it. Yuck. Furthermore, do crepes need to be premade and then microwaved??!! Look around our city and see how many creperies there are. It takes a few minutes to have someone making fresh crepes at a crepe station. Finally, my butterscotch with the hard black bottom didn't have this, it was also gooy, no crunch. Big letdown.
At the end of our dismal experience the owner came over having been informed by the waitstaff of our chagrin. She was very nice, comped our meal, but then she started defending the garnish employee, with her in front of us no less. She begins telling us about the young lady's past. This was tremendously awkward and we felt inappropriate. At the end we left $20 as a tip to the great waitstaff- Anna has served us many times during our visits and she is amazing. It's a pity that not everyone working here is up to her standard. It makes me sad to say, but this was my last time at the chocolate room.

  4. This place is a really unique spot. Wine, chocolate, etc…

The prices can get a little out of hand – it is just after all some variation of sugar and flour – but I appreciate the diversity of the offerings and that you can sit at a table and relax.

Friendly service. Good eats. Prime date spot.

    Yep, I'd go back.

  5. I've been here twice in the same week, so I guess that says something about it!

The first time I came in, I just stopped by to pick up some goodies – hot chocolate, a brownie and their take on an Oreo. Hot chocolate is delicious. It's sweet without being too thick or decadent – just right. I especially love their whipped cream. Their brownie is the perfect combination of fudge and cakey (which is more fudge-y than cake-y in my opinion). The "oreo" is good as well, though nothing too amazing.

The second time, my friend and I actually sat down and ate. We both had drinks and shared the brownie sundae. Brownie, good. Coffee ice cream, gooood. Whipped cream, good. My only issue is that it took way too long for everything to come out. Service was just ok – she took our order and did her job but didn't really check up on us after.

  6. I saw on the menu that they have almond milk so I decided to have the Dark hot chocolate. The temperature of the hot chocolate was good, not very hot. I like the bittersweet taste of it.

Flourless chocolate cake: rich and decadent. Served with raspberry framboise sauce and topped with fresh whipped cream. Some flourless cake are grainy or dry, but this is completely creamy like a dense ganache. The raspberry sauce is very liquid. It's a rich dessert, the kind that makes you regret eating it because it feels heavy on the stomach.

They gave me a sample of the almond cake which is nice.

Hot chocolate – Dark hot chocolate: bittersweet Belgian chocolate blended with Valrhona cacao powder and milk (almond milk)
Size: regular served on a tea cup
    Taste: bittersweet
    Temperature: warm, very drinkable
    Texture: creamy

  7. Homer Simpson Day Dreaming about the Chocolate World and him eating taking a bite from everything he sees or touches.

I think The Chocolate Room is part of that dream because it's all desserts and chocolate.

Walking in you can smell the place filled with chocolate and other flavors.

I started off the Milkshake with 2 scoops of homemade Vanilla and whole milk. One of the better milkshakes I have tasted. Not overly sweet, smooth, and creamy.

My girlfriend and I shared a Black Bottom Butterscotch. A layer of bittersweet chocolate lies beneath creamy butterscotch custard, topped with fresh coconut whipped cream, and a chocolate wafer.
Unique, flavors are good, and tasted great.

We also went with the Chocolate Fondue which comes with Homemade marshmallow, all natural peanut butter fudge, coconut macaroons, orange cheesecake, graham crackers, strawberries, and bananas.
The fondue wasn't too bad. The chocolate had a slight bitterness to it. I liked the dipping the strawberries, bananas, and peanut butter fudge the most in it.

Probably the go to dessert spot in Park Slope near Barclays Center especially if you in the mood for lots of chocolate.

  8. MMMMMMMMM! Just as good as their sister location on Court St. The world would be a much better place if chocolate was negative calories. Like, why can't chocolate be like celery? Sigh. Anyways — I've tried their other location on Court St. , so I figured this would be pretty much the same. Yes, I was right…BUT that is a good thing. My friend ordered the brownie sundae and I ordered the triple layer chocolate cake..because when you're in a shop filled with chocolate, you go big or go home. The chocolate cake was so delicious. It was light and airy, yet the perfect snack for my gluttonous craving. The brownie and homemade ice cream was equally as delicious. RUN to The Chocolate Room! It's worth every single calorie!
