  1. Love it here! I've been in the neighborhood for a year, and in that time it seems as if The Citizen has had about three facelifts. First, The Dopeness, then The Citizen and now a revamped version of The Citizen. They should definitely stick with their current look, because I think the layout and ambiance work great.

Best part about this bar is that there is a stage for live music. Although some other bars / restaurants in JC have areas for live music, this is probably the only spot that has a designated stage and a decent sound system. Besides music acts, they also have other performances such as comedy and burlesque shows.

This probably isn't the norm, but I came in last night for an event and they had a selection of craft beers on special for two dollars. You definitely can't go wrong with that. I don't think this is always the case, but drink prices are reasonable every time that I come in.

If you are looking for a fun and unpretentious bar in downtown JC, then The Citizen is the way to go!

  2. Came into the Citizen with my boyfriend on a Saturday night at around 7:30. The place was completely empty except for a few others sitting at the bar. I think it was due to the fact that it was St. Paddy's in Hoboken, so people were probably still out partying, or passed out in an alley way somewhere.

Anyway, I found out about this place through Yelp. I had the old place (I think it was called the Dopeness) bookmarked, and we happened to walk by it one day on the way home. We had seen honey sriracha chicken tenders on the menu and already knew we were going to have to come try that out

So that's exactly what we did. I ordered the chicken tenders. The sauce was a perfect balance of honey and sriracha. You could taste both but neither was overpowering the other. The chicken was a smidgeon on the dry side but it wasn't bad enough to make me not want to order it again. The sauce really makes up for it.

My boyfriend had the Kim Jong Il (bacon-wrapped dog, Korean steak, kimchi, scallions, sesame seeds, sriracha mayo). The hot dog looked and tasted dry – like they had dumped it into the fryer. I wasn't a fan but he was.

Tip – they have a $5 beer (can Tecate, PBR, Colt 45) + shot (Jamie) special. It'll be like you're in college all over again.

Overall, I really liked this place. It seems like a cool local place to hang out.

  3. This place has the potential for very good drunk food. It reminds me a lot of Sticky Finger's Joint in the city, in which they have a variety of creative chicken fingers and french fry combinations. Cinnamon toast crunch crusted? Doritos cool ranch flavored? Umm yeah, sign me up.

We ordered delivery, and the food was really good, but just didn't shine as much as I thought it would. A few things were off (delivery took over an hour to arrive, no silverware was included, no ketchup for 3+ orders of fries, one of the orders was slightly messed up, etc.), but that didn't stop us from devouring everything. In particular, the Chili Chilitown fries were the perfect mix of sloppy, delicious chili and soggy fries, and the grilled chicken on the Cobb Salad was surprisingly flavorful and tender.

In comparison, the steak sandwich and "Drunker" fries were a bit of a letdown, mostly because of the cut of meat; the steak was overcooked strips that you would normally see in a mediocre fajita and incredibly salty.

I can definitely see the potential for this place, but it didn't quite translate for me through delivery. I'd be interested to see what the actual space is like and see if things are better in house.
