I actually really liked this place. Best diner Ive had. There were a few very small things that turned me ofd and thats why they did not get 5 stars.
The place is definitely spacious! Has a good amount of seating, which is convenient. We were seated immediately upon arrival, and we were a group of 4 around 11 in the morning.
PRICES: Really good. With all four of us we paid 8 dollars each and we got full blown meals [this includes a 2 dollar tip from all of us as well, tax was only 2 we weren't cheap!]. Anyway, they even have a special where a coffee comes with the meal you ordered. 2 of us got hot chocolates so thats why it was a few dollars more than it would have been.
FOOD: Very delicious. I ordered fresh toast with turkey bacon and this is usually a hit or miss. This was definitely a hit! I ate it all and that is also very rare. It was not dry the syrup is not extremely sweet, the turkey bacon was cooked well. I was VERY impressed.
CONS: However, the check was written like chicken scratch and it was difficult to see what was charged for what person. This did not pose a huge problem because we pretty much split it even but this is not the best way to write a check for customers. The total was perfectly written though. Additionally, almost immediately after paying the check we were still catching up and we were asked if we were done so they can have our table. Technically we got kicked out…one of my friends still had a pancake and another a coffee. This rubbed me the wrong way.
Nevertheless, I would absolutely go back if I was in the area.
I work near here. When this used to be the Olympic diner, in three years, I'd only been there three times.
Since the Classic Diner opened up, I've been here dozens of times! It's funny the impact of new management. Speaking of which, the manager is incredibly friendly and not afraid of roll up his sleeves. He's taken an order or two from me (to go) and personally taken care of me.
I've had food here that ranges from the omelettes, frittatas, (the water always remembers to get me tabasco sauce), their soups, and wraps. Orders come quickly, but not too quick as in, "do they have these meals in the freezer?" Yum. I no longer say "there's nothing to really eat around here," and sometimes even come here for a work lunch!
What I sorta expect when I walk into a diner, old school stainless diner remodeled with modern touches.. The food here has been reliably good. The fried Calamari is on point; Light, fresh, crunchy.. The 'Greek style Penne' is absolutely awesome, even had diners at other tables eying it up, asking me about it. The waffles have been good but seem to vary in texture, some visits being lighter/fluffier and others a heavier, pancake consistency.. The dessert case is a sight to behold, and will have you pre gaming on what to order this, and next visit..
In the spirit of St.Patrick's day, tried the 'Irish Breakfast' today. Very disappointing. The white and black pudding included on the menu description were not present. If they were not available, I feel I should have been told so when this fact was discovered, and disclosed.
Overall though, one of the better diners, and I'll keep them in mind when I'm in the area.
This peculiar little piece of real estate was home to another diner before Classic took the space over. Gosh, what a dump the rickety old diner was, both outside and inside with a tired old couple running the show and random, but well represented drunks strewn around the perimeter. Classic Diner tore everything out and with the rebuild, no remnants remain of what used to be.
Orange coloration ties the appointments together from cups and plates to walls and booths, very cool in a groovy 70's meets modern way. Think Brady Bunch kitchen, minus Alice, meets a well built modern diners layout. Even the spinning cake case was the top of the line, modern & clean.
The Huevos Rancheros brought me back to my years in San Diego where this meal appears on many a menu, every Mexican establishments menu to be sure. Runny eggs under fresh green peppers and shredded cheddar cheese, beans and home fries. Pico de Galo, guacamole and sour cream comes generoso on the side.
My mom ordered the chicken quesadilla which half was consumed by yours truely. Each meal was delicious and under $9.00.
Our server was top shelf. With a genuine smile and offering freshly diced jalapenos, coffee refills and a few attentive checkin's, we were never in need of anything.
When it's good, it's good! Seated immediately, water brought, coffee brought, the decaf is hot and strong. Menus on the table. Bus service and waiter service spot on.
No meal is a disappointment. Today I had a grilled cheese on rye with bacon. It was perfect. The toasted blueberry muffin was the best we've had in a very long time. Crumble on top, moist and flavorful inside. Came to the table hot and crunchy.
Hot open turkey, egg breakfasts and lunch platters (chicken salad with Cole slaw and potato salad) are all great. Cole slaw has raisins which are a nice, sweet touch and red potato salad is flavored with dill.
Really nice all around diner. Every time.
I love me a good diner and everything about the Classic Diner is, well, classic. The modern decor, the great service and the tasty food just combine to make this a fabtastic restaurant! (Sorry, Merriam-Webster, I just made up that word because I couldn't decide between fabulous or fantastic to describe this place)
Located right underneath the elevated J & Z train line, so it has good public access. It is a little strange to drive to because the streets here in Richmond Hill go off at weird angles and bend & weave all over the place, but they have a small parking lot on both sides of the restaurant for your convenience if you do drive here. Even the unisex single occupant bathrooms are clean as can be and there's a baby changing table in the handicap accessible one for you new moms & dads!
This diner is a Queens classic and is aptly named because it's a melting pot of flavors. They have avgolemono soup showing their Greek side and also matzoh ball soup for what ails you. For me, the criteria for a good diner is if they can pull off a nice beef brisket and Classic does it well. Sliced deli thin and served au jus keeps it flavorful and moist. It wouldn't be a diner favorite without the requisite potato and vegetable sides. The burgers are great from the bite I got from my wife's and they have a good variety to choose from. You can sub in waffle fries, sweet potato fries or even home fries with your burger deluxe. We were too full to try the monstrous desserts in the display case, but I have my eye on that 8" high strawberry "short" cake for next time!
I have to say that the service was above and beyond any diner or many other restaurants I've seen. Our waiter kept our water glasses filled and could stack 3 dinners with all the side dishes on one arm. When he saw our table was crowded with all the dishes, he just dragged the next table over. This guy is hard-working old school and he deserves a nice tip.
I know why they called this place Classic Diner because the french toast is CLASSIC! Okay its not the best french toast in the world but yeah its really good and the turkey sausage was not bad either.
The coffee is good and the wait staff are consistently coming around and re-filling the cups.
Go early and they have a breakfast special. I got everything pictured for less than 20 dollars.
My parents like to have dinner with me and hubby around once a month, and diners are usually the top choice. Occasionally mom and I like to do dinner alone as well. Mom and I came to this place for dinner one night and I have to say I am very impressed. I remember it fondly as the shit hole on Myrtle Avenue for many, many years. They got a renovation and makeup which was long overdue. It's a beautiful place now, with lots of space. The food was pretty good as well. I had a wrap which is always one of my diner go-tos and it was really yummy. The fries were really good as well. Mom enjoyed her food as well. The prices were on par with most diners in Queens, and the portions are very generous. Overall it was a pretty good experience and I'd definitely go back.
