The Doughnut Project
“The beet ricotta: pretty magenta color from the beets, not enough ricotta.”
“I've also had the maple bacon bar (the bacon is nice and crispy) and cinnamon pepita doughnuts.”
“As for the Olive Oil and Black Pepper, it has subtle, light flavor, but then you get a hint of the pepper.”

Yes! Finally! I finally got all of the doughnuts I've been wanting to try (pretty much all of their flavors, tbh).
Every time I visit, it's near closing time and the doughnuts are sold out. I arrived around 2 PM today, and there they were.
I purchased the olive oil one, beet ricotta, maple bacon, and the famous everything bagel-donut hybrid. My favorite was definitely the everything donut. All of them are REALLY sweet, and I recommend balancing it out with a cup of tea or coffee.
To be completely honest, the quality of the doughnuts at The Doughnut Project aren't the very best in NYC. Don't get me wrong. It's good, but if you want the best doughnuts in NYC go to Dough in Brooklyn. However, I do think The Doughnut Project is worthy of four stars because of their flavors. You won't find the combo of flavors they instill in their doughnuts anywhere else. From their olive oil and cracked pepper to the PB&J doughnut, each one is unique. On top of that, the atmosphere they create in their small shop blocks away from Washington Square Park is artistic and a nice respite from the rest of Manhattan.
EPIC. Easily one of the best donut shops on the east coast! Peach pie donut was over the top ! This spot is a must for donut and pastry lovers.
Update: TDP crew is amazing. Was traveling to Baltimore and needed a dozen on a Sunday morning before opening hours and the team helped with a dozen assorted boxed and ready to travel ! Amazing team that goes above and beyond…
I would give it 3 stars for the donut but I am not a big donut fan so take my comment with a grain of salt. But the owners are from Seattle and doing some innovative things with donuts, trying to make them savory rather than just sweet. There are about 8-10 different options, some of which are truly unique. We stopped here on a food tour and tried the lemon and salt. Still rather sweet for my taste. The owners are super nice people and I hope they make it. The donut itself was just ok in my opinion.
There is no shortage of great doughnut places in NYC, and this one is no exception. I finally made it over there on Father's Day. I decided since I didn't have an actual gift that doughnuts were the next best thing.
I went over early, around 9:30, and it was nice to see it wasn't packed. I follow them on instagram and see they sell out some days, so I didn't know what to expect. The place isn't too big, with one counter to order, and seating along the window on either side of the door. I figured I would get 6 doughnuts to go, and one for myself that I wound up eating there. They had 9 doughnut options, plus two more that were off menu. I got the bacon maple bar, salted chocolate with buttered pretzel, everything dughnut, peanut butter and jelly, and the cornberry and peach pie which were new off menu items. Then I got another everything doughnut to eat there for myself.
The everything doughnut was great! It had the seeds on top like on an everything bagel, and a cream cheese frosting. The frosting wasn't really sweet, and not too cream cheese-y, it was a really good balance. The doughnut itself was kind of fluffy, and not too dense. I saved the rest for later, for after brunch with my family. We shared a few of the doughnuts. I took a piece of the maple bacon, which was soo good! I think bacon pretty much makes anything great. I also wanted to try the cornberry. It was so interesting, and I mean that in a good way. It was mixture of corn and blueberry custard inside, and you could really taste the corn. Definitely unique, and I really liked it! Unforenately after those two I was pretty full, and didn't get to try the rest. I left them with my dad, so he could enjoy them.
Definitely a great place to get doughnuts! I plan on going back, and trying some more!
There was an Instagram post by the NY Times Food, highlighting the kaya doughnut flavor that was custom made for Singapore restaurant Chomp Chomp. I HAD to come the following morning to try it, but alas, they did not have any there (yet) – and the staff behind the counter that morning goes,"You should have called here first."
Perhaps, you may want to not advertise that it's sold here via Instagram to BEGIN with.
I wasn't going to leave empty handed and got an assortment. Honestly, my most favorite (and reason for the rating) is the beets & ricotta flavor. It was the absolute best. Followed closely by the everything bagel and bacon one. The only flavor I didn't love was the lemon rosemary (I think) flavor.
Now I just tweet at them, waiting (still, months later) for them to get the Kaya doughnut flavor in.
I tried pretty much all the flavors of the donuts available because I am insane like that and we got these for an event at our company.
Here is my verdict:
Beet and Ricotta – pretty strange combination imo for a donut…I could still taste the beet. The ricotta filling was fluffy and interesting but personally I wasn't the biggest fan although everything was held together very well. You can taste the good quality of the yeast donut itself
Maple Bacon – The bacon was very crispy so I did like the texture. However, I prefer my donuts on the sweeter side and if you like the strange salty sweet combination, this might float your boat. They basically added bits and pieces of salty bacon onto a plain glazed donut.
Everything Bagel Donut – This might come close to my being favorite one. The cream cheese frosting was ON POINT. If you are craving both a bagel and a donut, you have met the perfect concoction that will satisfy both cravings…Can I get a whoop whoop..although I did notice there was a significant amount of sesame and no onion bits ( that might taste gross though).
Olive Oil and Pepper – oh my. oh my oh my..I love you like a love song baby. This sounds like a frickin weird donut. Bacon donuts have been done before but olive oil and pepper on a donut? I couldn't stop eating it. I guess I really like the little kick of the pepper at the end and how it brings out the perfect texture of the donut itself
Peanut butter and jelly – I can't deny my love of peanut butter. This is also one of the better ones in my opinion. If you don't like peanut butter and jelly in general, I can't acknowledge you as a person unless you have a legitimate reason (allergies). Otherwise, unforgivable. Not liking this is like saying you hate rainbows and butterflies…and all the other wonderful things in this world
Lemon with sea salt – I was not a fan as I am not partial to lemon flavors :/ nuff said
Salted chocolate w pretezel – I was a little unimpressed by this. The mocha donut at Dough reigns supreme when it comes to chocolatey flavors….
Mango Bango – I couldn't taste any of the mango flavors? I think they should work on bringing the flavors out in this one as it is still quite new
Continuing my celebration of National Donut Day today at The Doughnut Project. I found these guys on Instagram and fell in love with every pic I saw. I knew I had to make a trip here. Their menu is pretty small, but don't let its' simplicity fool you. Their donuts are by no means simple!
I got the Everything donut and my boyfriend ordered the Stuffed PB&J donut. I think the everything donut was everything it was hyped up to be. It tasted great: dough was fluffy and the glaze was light. The poppy seeds, sesame seeds and the garlic bits all worked well together. Do I think it measures up to the Everything bagel? No. But it's certainly very close. My boyfriend enjoyed it but not as much as I did. He thought the combination was a bit weird. He loved his PB&J donut, but I was iffy on it. The jelly was delicious, but the stuffed PB was a little on the heavy side. Plus, they gave a lot of PB. It's a very heavy donut, so make sure to come up for air when you're eating this one!
Their iced coffee is also really good. I recommend getting that as well. The guy working there is very friendly. He answers any questions you have about the place and the donuts. They have pretty cool wall art too.
Highly recommend coming here to try the donuts! I'll certainly be back for more!
