  1. This is a great, great date spot. I love that you can make reservations – unfortunately even though we had we were still seated about 30 minutes after our appointed time. However, the staff handled it really well; they gave us some sparkling wine to enjoy at the bar and apologized more than once for the wait once we were actually seated. Our waitress also didn't bat an eye when we named a price for a bottle we wanted to spend that was a bit on the lower side – instead she directed us to a few options in that range and we ended up with a delicious, smoky red.

A word of caution – portions are not big. We ordered the bread, scallops, steak tartar and roasted beets with parmesan. The beets were my least favorite but I'm glad we ordered them because it was a filling amount to split between two. The bread was fabulous and though I only got a few bites each of the steak and scallops those were also incredible.  5 stars for quality and service, minus a star for the teeny (but pricey) portions and the wait.  Still, I can thoroughly recommend and would return anytime!

The Four Horsemen is the natural wine bar at Williamsburg from LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy. A couple of weeks ago, I went to this place just for wine, and really loved the vibe and décor of this modest bar/restaurant. On my more recent visit, I wanted to see how the small plate-centric food from this place was. A combination of great wine and food always makes for a pleasant meal obviously. While there were some winners at the Four Horsemen, I felt the consistency was a bit of an issue.

The start was very promising. Warm house bread and cultured butter was absolutely delicious and the olives escabeche was pretty unique as well. On the other hand, as much as it sounded promising, I really didn't get heirloom pepper fritter with thyme and buckwheat honey. It just felt like oversweet flour without much character. I was a huge fan of summer peas that came with Calabrian chili, cashews and ricotta salata, with absolutely refreshing taste that would make for a perfect complement to your wine. Charred eggplant cappelletti in brodo was also surprisingly good, with aromatic flavor of the pasta that was delightful without being heavy. On the other hand, pork sausage with beans and mustard greens was too salty even though the meat was nicely cooked. I had to stuff a lot of vegetables with the sausage to balance out the flavor. For dessert, I was pleasantly surprised with the marvelous flavor of brown bread ice cream, but somehow the combination with roasted figs and almonds didn't add up. I think standalone ice cream would've done the job better.

As noted above, the vibe at the Four Horsemen is really great, with minimalist Scandinavian décor and hip vibe coming from the relatively small wine bar. The table was fully booked but I had no problem getting seated on the last minute at the bar. There are a lot of exotic wine selections (I've tried a bottle of orange wine that tasted pretty unique but I would probably go for white or red) and my suggestion is to try a variety in glasses. The Four Horsemen is really a great place for a casual wine night among handsome crowd in Williamsburg. I'd love to see the kitchen have more consistency to complement the wine selection.

  3. My friend and I are both pretty into wine, so we decided to check out the Four Horsemen this past Thursday. When we arrived just after 6pm, the whole place was empty. When we left at 9pm, it was packed. So if you work in a borough, or can sneak out at 5, the weeknight early bird special is probably your best bet (even on a Thursday!).

We chose 2 seats at the bar, and our bartender helped us select an optimal wine procession. I started with a super light French Muscadet, tried an approachable orange wine from Friuli (very interesting, yet very delicious!), and then finished with a Gamay. She also helped us choose a cheese based on our wine selection, a sheep's milk cheese with fantastic stewed shallots on top.

In addition, we started with some airy gougeres, which were served piping hot and peppered with raclette. We also went for the warm house bread, fried potatoes, and then the clams with garlic, oregano, and smoked pork. I loved all of the dishes, from the comforting warm bread and decadent butter, to the spiced patatas bravas. But for me, the best dish was the clams. They were served in an herbaceous broth that had amazing flavor.

Overall, I loved the sharp focus on wines, as well as the unique, yet cozy menu.

  4. So… A) they don't have WiFi B) the mobile signal is atrocious C) the service is incredible (see Rachel) and d) the food is indescribable and incredible.

Seriously, the menu was one of those 'list a bunch of ingredients and who knows what on earth you'll get in your plate' places, but the food was scrumptious. The sugar snap peas with lemon and ricotta Salata is possibly the best thing I ever ate in my whole life. The veggie pasta tasted like it had been seasoned and cooked with Italian sausage, but it was veggie. How is this even possible?! And the avocado thing … Well, I don't know what it was but it was terrific.

We had a pinot from the Willamette Valley, Bow and Arrow, and ended up ordering it 5 more times. Oopsy! Absolutely delicious.

I love this place and you will too.

  5. I've been meaning to try this restaurant since last summer when I moved to Williamsburg last summer. This place gets an A+ on so every level you can imagine– food, service, ambiance, and details are all top notch.

My friend is vegetarian so I decided to go non-meat for the day and thought it would be hard but we had no problems at all. We split a bottle of red wine and got the bread, fried potatoes, and pasta. Wowza, all three items were seriously insane. The bread was homemade, super warm, and was melt in your mouth status. Definitely recommend getting that. The fried potatoes were perfectly done and were served with a delicious aioli sauce and are to not be missed at all, not to mention a perfect serving for sharing purposes. Last came the pasta which was super light and was seasoned with the perfect olive oil dressing it seemed and some veggies/herbs. This was definitely one of the best meals I've had lately in Williamsburg.

Service was amazing, as people are super attentive there. Also, their decor/details are awesome. They have globe lights hanging from this interesting slat roof, and they have shelves of wine bottles all around. I definitely noticed the wine bottles throughout the restaurant, even the front window. When you go here, all the little details about it make this place so personable and a great addition to the neighborhood.

SO glad I got to try this place. Randy, I'll be back! FB love. 🙂

  6. Wow this place gets better and better each time I'm here. Came here for dinner tonight and as usual the food was amazing. Place is owned by James Murphy of LCD sound systems. I even once saw Aziz Ansari here haha!

Tonight I ordered the black bass crudo, clams, soft shell crab, smoked speck, robiola bosina, and steak. The cheese and charcuterie plates are always really good so definitely try out the speck and robiola bosina. The crudo was garnished with carrot dashi and cilantro which were full of flavor, clams were delicious and soaked in a savory soup, soft shell crab was a small marinated crab that was tender to the bite and steak was cooked medium rare and garnished with peppercorn and mustard greens giving it a Chinese flare.

Wines are great as well! I tried a glass of the Pinot and the Tempranillo. Pinot was very fruity and tasted like the grape itself while the Tempranillo was more flavorful and had deeper undertones.

Overall an excellent experience. Check it out if you're in Williamsburg!

  7. Very small place but it definitely had the local vibe for the business meeting I had with someone visiting from out of town.  The pasta with asparagus was delicious and the dessert I had was awesome (I know it was chocolate as I'm a chocolate fiend).  I wasn't sure if the meal would be filling but I think that dessert made it such.  Staff was very friendly & even let me charge my dying phone; I'm not a drinker but my guest liked the wine she had.

  8. Stumbled upon this restaurant as I was searching the neighborhood for a small quick bite while waiting for another reservation to happen. Was pleasantly surprised because I was told this was the second time having brunch service. Good job!

Ordered the poached eggs, crispy potatoes, and their homemade apple soda. The poached eggs were done perfectly, sometimes the eggs are far too underdone or overdone and just defeats the purpose of being called a poached egg. The crispy potatoes are SO good. Can't eat this by itself because it's so flavorful but having it in between bites of the poached eggs was just perfect. The apple soda was interesting but I don't think I will be ordering it again.
