The General Greene
“Although the big yellow Van Leeuwen truck is good ice cream, the General Greene's flavors were far and away more interested and executed perfectly.”
“I was really perplexed to read such negative reviews posted, but did not have any of the issues these other people have listed.”
“He also showed us the ice cream stand that they built outside which will open in a few weeks.”

I'm new to the neighborhood, & this place came highly recommended by a friend of mine who has lived in Fort Greene his entire life. Decided to check it out around 6p on a Sunday afternoon after dying in bed from a post-birthday party hangover all day.
Ambience: clean, bright, lots of natural light. rustic, natural wood & metal chairs, tables, and bar. Casual dress, attentive and knowledgable service, relatively low roar of conversation from the customers. Soft music.
We sat at the bar & were immediately given water in these awesome, old school glasses. We ordered 2 bloody mary's, which we were given options with (vodka, gin, tequila, etc etc). We went with a house-flavored pickle vodka. The bloody's were perfect- thick-ish, spicy, fresh, bright. Came with a pickle, lemon wedge, pickled red pepper, and green olive.
Meals: I ordered the fried chicken with mashed potatoes, corn bread and gravy- as well as a side of brussel sprouts. My friend ordered the pork tenderloin which came on a bed of sweet potato mash, with some greens and mushrooms. Both meals were absolutely fire!! Our plates were clean.
They have a ton of desserts that they make IN HOUSE, and we didn't get to try any this time but that's only because we were so full / still sorta hung over. lol. Next time, forrrrr sure.
This place is a must try, and the prices are really really great for the quality of service and food your receiving. I would go here with groups, kids, dates, friends, family, literally anybody. Awesome spot for awesome food. Oh, and they dim the interior lights as the day goes on, and put out candles, which gives it a really nice vibe.
GO! & make sure you tweet them, cause they respond, and they are cool as hell. lol.
One of the friendliest and most knowledgable bar tenders in Brooklyn. Loved this place!
This place is super cute and we surprisingly had no trouble getting a table on a Sunday morning around 11:30. I like their menu offerings — they have breakfast pastries as well as some healthier options. My friends and I ordered a variety of pastries including the banana bread, the cinnamon roll, and the doughnut. I thought that all of these were good, and actually preferred this to their breakfast entree. I ordered the cemita from their special menu. That might have been my mistake — I probably should have stuck to something tried and true from their regular menu. The cemita was OK. I don't think they used the right bread. It seemed like a regular sandwich. We stayed for a while and the servers were good about coming back to refill our water.
We stopped by the General Greene for a late lunch today and enjoyed delicious food and great service. It's a decent sized restaurant with some cool decorative features and lighting. There is a decent sized bar as well as Fort Grace (walk up ice cream bar) just outside. The brunch and lunch menus are combined into one with various egg, omelette, waffle, french toast, burgers, and sandwich offerings. Prices were reasonable for the neighborhood and our waiter was friendly and attentive throughout. I tried the quiche of the day which had peppers, local corn, spinach, and Gruyere cheese. It was delicious and served with a side of greens with a light but tasty dressing. This was my first visit here but my dining mates had been here before and said sometimes the service and wait for food can be extremely slow, so may be good to aim for an off hour if you want a quick bite!
They have a separate dinner menu with some yummy looking salads and entrees, as well as some mouthwatering desserts. Will have to come back for a dinner and drink sometime soon!
Would recommend stopping here when in the neighborhood, perhaps before or after a trip to Fort Greene park, the farmers market, or the Brooklyn Flea.
A cute dinette/restaurant with plenty of seating, rustic, if not homely charm. It looks to be a great brunch place based.
I also didn't have the food here but based on the menu looks to be a family style shared plates establishment. Although typically up my alley, i wasn't necessarily hungry. Just thirsty for a drink or two and on the drinks front, they didn't disappoint. We tried the Sip n' Pine and The Middleton and both were refreshing drinks well suited for sipping and carrying a conversation.
Will return one day for grub but for now, i can attest to their bar's prowess and service. They also have some in-house drafts on tap worthwhile exploring. Outside is a shack dubbed Fort Grace which serves up reliable ice cream for the neighborhood.
Didn't get to try the food menu but the pours were strong. Unique selection of cocktails made with housemade syrup (cinnamon, earl grey, chamomile). We were greeted and served by super friendly and smiley staff. The ambience is a classy kind of casual – semi-dim lighting, soft background music, and a simple wooden decor. Service was impeccable. And bonus points for having delicious ice cream steps away as Fort Grace is right next door.
Just finished brunch. Here is the update:
The food we ordered:
Cuban sandwich with fries- average.
Huveros salavadorean – the waiter suggested this dish calling it different. I like different so I ordered it. It was ok- not special or outstanding.
The service was good. The waiters were attentive.
The atmosphere- casual comfortable vibe.
Overall – the food is average. If you are in the neighborhood, hungry and want a decent then it's an ok choice.
This is a solid 3 star restaurant.
Nice neighborhood, rustic ambiance – but the food (whether brunch or dinner) never impresses. It's fine, good enough – you will enjoy your meal. But, you will never remember it (mark my words).
Just make sure you come here because you just need a restaurant that is located in a convenient spot for you and your friends. Don't come here if you are a foodie.
The highlight is actually the ice cream stand, Fort Grace, that is attached. They deserve 5 stars for their dark chocolate and salty caramel ice cream (order them together).
