There's no place like the Greene Grape.
If ever there were a reason to sing like Dorothy from The Wiz when she found her way home, it would be that you eased on down to this fairy-godmother wine shop on the day that your reward points expired.
My face was a ruby glow when I picked my magically free bottle of wine. The discount is straight from Oz (after the evil spell was lifted of course). Well I suppose you pay enough before you get that dreamy discount, but it's the best deal I've ever had at a local wine shop.
And of course, for making it there in time, I treated myself to a tall bottle of wicked blanco tequila from their growing spirit section, and gulped a half glass of their daily tasting pick.
If I wasn't in the courageous and summery mood for homemade margaritas, I would've chosen an organic box of sauvignon blanc or one of the perfectly-priced under $10 bottles.
Actually following the yellow brick road in being diligent about appreciating wine, made it possible to save money while getting tipsy.
I love their cheese selection. Encased gold! It's nice that they have an ice cream window during the Summer. Their coffee is ok and their prices are a bit steep but it is, afterall, a wine store so don't expect to go in and find everything you need. The staff is generally nice.
There are plenty of wine stores in Fort Greene, but as far as I know, none of the others have the selection of lower-priced wine that the Greene Grape has. I love their rewards program, and that they offer free delivery too–haven't taken advantage of that but with the cold this winter, I probably will.
This was my local spot when I lived in Ft. Greene and Clinton Hill.
They deliver, have free tastings each day and have a great variety of wines in all different price ranges.
I learned to love Sancerre due to the bottle they carry there. Their $10-15 rack has great whites (would not recommend the reds on that rack). I tend to really enjoy their reds that are located to the left of the store (if you are looking at the cashier).
I also REALLY appreciate their loyalty program. After you spend a specific amt they send you a $20 gift card to use towards anything.
The staff is nice and helpful.
Great wine shop!
Good selection and all the wine I've had here has been really good. Free delivery for purchases over 25 dollars if you're in their "pink zone"-aka close enough to the store!
Staff is friendly and pleasant.
Only reason they don't get 5 stars is because I'm a spoiled brat when it comes to wine shops after living next to Off the Vine in Astoria!
If the Food Network constructed a pop up general store in FG, this would be it. Has a slight whiff of PS Union Market to it in terms of offerings, space and pricing, which is a good thing.
My highlights include: Baked brownies/cupcakes, Stumptown coffee, Pimento cheese (sold out after a recent TONY blurb!), Roberta's baked breads, Jeni's Ice Cream, It's It ice cream sammys (SF treat), superb cheese selection, knowledgable butcher on site and fresh fish.
Hip staff but not so hip it hurts, ask away
I came here by accident. I wish all my accidents were that pleasant.
In search of a special bottle of Bourbon, a friend of mine told me his on-line search identified a bottle at The Greene Grape. So I googled it, and discovered I would be in the area the next day visiting a school in Brooklyn (we go there each year to read to the kids and talk to them about college). So afterwards we swung by The Greene Grape to get my special bottle only to find out they didn't have it. The staff there quickly realized the issue – turns out that Downtown Cellars used to also be called the Greene Grape Downtown, so in some databases it still showed up as such. Oops, but a good oops.
This small store has a nice selection of wine and spirits. It's not a huge selection, but a nice selection of quality products. They didn't have the bottle I was looking for (a fairly rare bottle of Hirsch), but they have Noah's Mill, Rowen Creek, Old Pogue, and a few other less common and very good bourbons. They also carry Hendricks Gin and Anchor's Junipero Small Batch Gin (my 2 favorite gins), Auchentoshan scotch, and Hanger 1 vodka. So they are tops in my book.
Same story on the wine. For example they only had 3 Rose wines and about 7 sparkling wines when we were there. But all of them were good quality and at a good price. We ended up getting a bottle of wine.
Service was very good – friendly and knowledgeable staff.
And because of my mistake, I discovered the Fort Greene area and spent two hours wandering the streets of this great neighborhood.
Very cute little corner store that offers everything from beer and wine, to fresh fish and other health food needs. I stopped in on a Wednesday night around 8:30 p.m. after working out at the gym, and was still able to get a fresh catfish fillet. Bonus points for the helpful and courteous staff. I will definitely be stopping in on my way from the gym more often.
