I live in the area and pass this place all the time. I've really been looking forward to trying it, and was disappointed when I did.
I don't remember exactly what drinks we got, but both drinks were good. We got the Bayou Wings as an appetizer, they were pretty good too. My fiance ordered 3 different tacos for his meal. He didn't like the sauce that it came with, but he thought that the chicken and pork tacos were alright. I took a bite of the fish taco and it was so unbelievably dry. It was just tortilla and dry fried fish, that's it.
For my meal, I really wanted jerk chicken. It was terrible. Really really bad, honestly the worst jerk chicken I've ever had. Maybe it was my mistake for ordering jerk chicken in Bay Ridge? But if you have it on your menu, you should know how to make it, no? The rice it came with was very flavorful, but the chicken tasted like a whole box of salt had been poured on it. I took a couple of bites then had them wrap it up so that my fiance could take the leftovers since he has saltier tastes than I do. It was wayyyy too salty for him too. These cooks should stick to what they know.
Disappointed!
I cant believe that I have to start out my review like this but thats how disappointed I am with this place. I have been wanting to try this place since I saw the awning going up earlier this year (summer time if Im not mistaken). The awning said "Caribbean Cuisine." As this is something that I really love I was excited. Now the odd part about this place is that its the original Circles Cafe turned into 2 separate restaurants. Circles Cafe serves American cuisine. It was pretty shocking that after so many years of Circles Cafe success that they would suddenly want to break this into two restaurants. Very strange. Anyhow the catch here is that they use the SAME OIL, SAME KITCHEN, same chefs and many of the same ingredients as Circles. Circles is "ok" nothing spectacular. My excitement had quickly dropped as I realized the food would come out of the same kitchen. Nonetheless I decided to try the ropa vieja and it was honestly terrible. It was supposed to be "Cuban" style but it appears that the pork was just drenched in some type of tomato sauce. It was also the same rice that Circles always used which I have never liked and some cold black beans with bits of corn. It was an overall fail. I even tried to pass off the dish to a family member and even they took two bites and said no thanks. Im down to give second chances but I am not even willing to give this another shot. I only tried that one entree so Im not going to go as far as to give this one star as there is the possibility that some other things may be a bit better but I cant see how much better being that Circles is just mediocre to begin with.
No thanks!!!
