The Hideaway

“Tucked away in the heart of TriBeCa, The Hideaway offers comfort food at its finest.”

“There's something very primal about that but please operate mallets safely — collateral shell damage can strike your neighbors.”

“Aesthetically great and well-appointed, but I want to return for more of the amazing fish tacos and crab cake I had for dinner.”

  1. Nothing special. Tiny bar with some good mixology on the menu, but the bartender girls were totally meh. Not welcoming, somewhat snotty, and just a turn off. We only stopped by to kill time until our reservation was up, so we spent a good 45 mins in here. Looks like a lot of usuals returning- sure won't be us. The bathrooms were surprisingly clean and they're not men/women designated- phew. The food everyone was ordering looked good. I also didn't like the red light decor much- the Asian glow after drinks wouldn't show in this place, which is a plus but it was just weird lighting.
The bar was clean and my drinks were well prepared. It's definitely a "hideaway"- almost walked right past it. The music is good – 90s favorites.

  2. A few co-workers and I came here for Thursday drinks and we were a little dismayed at the fact there were no happy hour deals. However, the normal prices are okay. $6-7 for craft brews. Not amazing, but not terrible either. Mixed drinks and cocktails are a bit more pricey, and not all that strong, so buyer beware. We had a pretty large party, and it got a little cramped, so if you're planning to have a lot of people for "happy hour" (20+), I would go somewhere else.

Service overall is pretty attentive and kind, but again, very adamant about not having drink specials. Weird. Doesn't seem like they're having trouble attracting customers I guess, but I think it's still crazy. Okay, dead horse beaten.

We ordered some random bites, like the tacos and truffle fries, which were very good. Fries were crisp and had that strong truffle smell/taste, and the tacos were more sizable than most bars in the city. For once, I'm not complaining about the tacos! Also, crab night does intrigue me, so one of these days, I'll have to see what that's all about.

Overall, the beer selection is decent and if you want to order food, most of the dishes I tried were pretty tasty. I can see myself coming back for food, but if it's just post-work drinks, might try some other places first.

  3. The Hideaway is a bit of secret. There are not too many reviews here despite the fact it's relatively easy to find in TriBeCa and has been open for a while. It's a small place with not very natural coming in even in the early afternoon when I cut out of work a bit early and head up here with a couple friends.

We had a drink or two, of course, nothing fancy but there are a few beers available. Eventually we realize some food might be in order, and there are a few appetizers on the compact menu. It would be easy for a bar like this to have no food or perhaps just some chips and cold snacks, so I appreciate the full kitchen.

There's nothing earth-shattering available, and frankly I'm not sure the presence of some white truffle justifies the $12 cost for our order of fries, but hey, this is Tribeca. The wings are better, nice and tangy with plenty of hot sauce. It's a bit far from the office so it's hard to see us coming back without the surplus of time we had on this particular Friday, but at the same time, I could see it happening.

  4. The name Hideaway is very apt, as this bar is located in a less trafficked street in Tribeca.  Came here for drinks after work one day, and it's a pretty standard bar, but I do appreciate that it is less frequented, and typically not super crowded.

There are TV's around the bar, which makes it a nice spot for sporting events (especially since it's probably rarely crowded).  And I must admit I never even considered ordering food here, but after seeing the yelp pictures of crabs, I'm tempted to the next time I visit.

  5. I thought this was a dive bar? Or is it just a TriBeCa version of a dive bar? Either way, if you've ever yearned to elbow past seas of rich white people with designer baby strollers blocking every pathway as you try buying a $7 domestic beer, then you've found just the spot to make that happen. I suppose you gotta know where you bread is buttered, so there's a good chance this watering hole will double as a daycare facility for the foreseeable future…

I hear they have a fun crab dinner series that I'd love to try sometime. Here's to hoping that Monday – Thursday nights are nothing like the Diaper Disco this place turns into on the weekends…

  6. I unfortunately have to downgrade The Hideaway… They lost their mojo.

    Breadless crab cakes were meh.

Truffle asiago fries, which were previously my all-time favorite, were not fresh and full of flavor like they were in the past. That was a a hard pill to swallow… or shall I say potato.

Drinks and service were like the food… meh.

  7. Two words: Truffle fries.  AMAZING.  Tucked away in the heart of TriBeCa, The Hideaway offers comfort food at its finest.  With a menu that changes pretty regularly, the dishes are sure to please.  I've had the grilled cheese and catfish tacos, which were both great.  Their seasonal cocktails are one of a kind, along with their selection of craft beers.  They also have an additional crab night menu, which I'm dying to try.  It's a pretty small place, and can be hard to get a table during happy hour, but it's definitely a place to try if ever in the area.

Crossfit 212 reserved the entire bar on this evening. We drank and drank and had plenty of merriment. The Three barwomen were fun and in high spirits until they found out that one of their regulars passed away.  It makes you realize that you need make the most out of each day.  The Hideaway was a phenomenal place to hang out with good friends and new people.  Plus they have several Rye Whiskeys. I enjoyed Old Overholt most of night. I did have some Mt Gay, Prosecco, and shot of Espolon Tequila.
