The Irish American

“The Financial District does not have a reputation for its night life, but I still favor this basement bar because of its low-key factor in comparison to other bars in the area.”

“With a full bar, multiple pool tables, darts, small arcade games, even a ping pong table; you could sit down with a beer and end up here for hours.”

“Any emotion you feel this is the best place in the financial district to be.”

  1. The Irish American is an OK bar in the Financial District. After work is packed with workers drinking beers, and getting bites.

The entrance on John Street is small. You have to walk down a set of stairs to actually access the bar… Like in the old times of the Prohibition era.

The space is pretty big (you won't risk to do not seat,) with different kind of seating areas: bar stools, booths, etc. It's pretty loud, with TV on sports channels.

A good selection of beers, burgers and such. Nothing crazy or particularly tasty. The usual sport bar. Good crowd thou. And service is surprisingly pretty fast.

  2. Went here as was close to our hotel . Was very busy and lots of sports TV . Friendly staff ESP Maura who was very friendly and welcoming . Watched football game got full Irish breakfast which was really nice and good value. Ribs where delicious as well … Pitcher beer €15 which is great value . Well well recommended !

  3. On the day of the NYC Half, our group, like many other, wanted a greasy meal and a good beer, so we reserved a table for 12 at this pub.  Though it doesn't look like much at first, once you enter the basement, you'll see that it can easily fit 200  people with no problem.  Unfortunately on the day we came, the staff wasn't prepared for such a large crowd.  This wasn't their fault, this area is not well known for weekend crowds.  In fact, most restaurants in this area are closed on the weekends, because nobody come here to eat or see sights.

In any case, our big group came and ordered wings, beers, burgers, mac n cheese, and more beers.  Like I said, the staff was not prepared for such a large group throughout the afternoon so they were obviously overwhelmed.  The staff was not very attentive and the food was just ok, except for the wings.

We started with the Jameson infused chipotle wings, and it was a good thing we did.  The wings were very tasty, very moist, and just hit the spot for those who just ran around Manhattan.  Sadly, that's where it ended.  The food that came after was just bad.

The Mac and Cheese was huge but flavorless.  The cheese didn't taste baked in with the mac, more like it was thrown together in the plate instead of being baked together.  The macaroni was plain as if you just boiled it and ate it out of the pot.  Overall, not a good food item.

The CAJUN BURGER was nothing more than a dry patty sprinkled with old bay seasoning on top, that's it.  The other burgers were also dry, but definitely not small.

All their food portions are huge, so you should come hungry and expect to be filled.  You might not always be satisfied, but you will be full.  I'm going to give them the benefit of a doubt that the pub was unprepared for that kind of action on a Sunday without football.  Maybe next time we go, the service and food will be better.

  4. This place is a great hangout spot for a long day of work. It's located underground and has food, karaoke, and pool. The pricing for alcohol is decent and the bar tenders are nice. The fries are crispy but mash potato-ey. The gravy also goes great with the fries.

  5. You know, I had mid-level expectations for this place, but my whole family was really pleasantly surprised by how much we enjoyed our pre-9/11 Memorial brunch on a rainy Sunday.

I had made a reservation, just in case, but definitely did not need one. The place is huge and was pretty sleepy on a Sunday morning.

I ordered the Full Irish Breakfast, wanting to get in the "spirit" – and really loved it. It was pretty standard across the board, but everything was cooked perfectly and the portion was nice. I was able to swap toast for a side of fruit, which made all of the sausage, beans, and eggs feel a little lighter.

My mom and sister ordered the Eggs Benedict, which they loved. My dad chose the French Dip sandwich, and raved about how juicy and tender the meat was.

Our server was great – very friendly and happy.

  6. Any emotion you feel this is the best place in the financial district to be. I was pretty sad today but me and my friends came out to drink and had some karaoke and it just became the best night ever. I sang some Nysnc and everyone else sang Michael Jackson and U2… Over all after work drink this is one of the best places in the financial district to be.

  7. One of the first bars I started frequenting upon my move to NYC. The Financial District does not have a reputation for its night life, but I still favor this basement bar because of its low-key factor in comparison to other bars in the area.

I'm sad because one of my favorite bartenders recently left, but kudos to management for bringing in some really cool new people!

I also love running into Tim (manager/bartender) and Adrienne (bartender). They have been serving me since I started coming here, and are awesome! Everyone who works here is pretty cool and that's a huge part of why I continue to come in. I always feel welcome.

The other reasons I like this place? The French Dip sandwich. O…m…g! I've seen reviews complaining about the food. Here's the thing: you have to order the right item. The Jameson infused wings, the nachos, and the Chieftan sandwich are also safe bets!

The bouncers here are friendly, so unlike certain other places, I don't feel turned off to the place as soon as I approach it.

Affordable drinks and food. Clean, chill atmosphere with a juke box and dim lighting. It gets a bit crowded later in the week, but chances are you'll still consider it to be a relaxed environment.

Check out their game room and karaoke as well. Not my things, but I've heard only good things from fellow patrons.

  8. I was impressed with how large this place is! I ended up sitting at the beginning of the bar, but as I walked to the bathroom I learned there is a game room and lots of tables for sitting in a group and enjoying a meal.

We stopped in here to grab a beer and use the bathroom to be honest, before we heading back for the upper west. Thanks to great bar company and a great bar tender Sunday afternoon that became 5 beers and few hours.

I am a big cider girl and the bartender recommended the cherry cider mixed with harp beer, he called it a charp!! It was a great recommendation and I was happy to try, and will be happy to drink again!

The nachos were the only food we had but they were delicious!

The place has a great Irish pub vibe and in a great location with great locals around the bar there to represent the neighborhood and welcome those from a little more north!!
