This is the new business that came in after Samdado closed down. I have since been to this place twice and I am glad that I have held off my review till I had gone there more than once.
The reason I did not review right away is that a LOT of Korean places suffer from decaying food quality and service shortly after opening. They'll have a grand opening and the food and service will be great for the first month or two and then drop off sharply afterwards. "The Island" is no different.
The first time I went with my brother for lunch. I got the sashimi bento and he got the hwae duk bap which is essentially sashimi over rice with veggies and such mixed in. The food was GREAT as was the service. They gave a lot of good ban chan or side dishes and my bento came with fried shrimp and dumplings. I wanted to give this place 4 stars.
We went again just yesterday for lunch, again. I got the sashimi bento once again and he got the sushi bento. I was thinking about getting the jung sik which is essentially like a 3-5 course meal to share with my brother (it costs 20 bucks) and the lady laughed at me for thinking it could feed two… She said in Korean, 'It's only 20 bucks, it can't feed two people!" Wow, I'm sorry I didn't realize that 20 dollars at a dinky Korean Japanese restaurant can't feed two. It seems like every other subpar Korean Japanese restaurant manages to pull it off no problem but I guess your farm-raised, color-adulterated salmons are of slightly higher quality than those served by every other sushi place in Queens. *rolls eyes* Service ticked me off and the bentos did not have fried shrimp this time, only the dumplings. There was no dressing on the salad and the server briefly argued with us when we asked her about it saying that the water from the salad was the dressing… Then gave us "extra dressing." The portions of sushi/sashimi were smaller this time as well.
Overall, another potentially good place ruined by the good 'ol Korean grand opening scheme. I wouldn't spend a cent at this place. Go out to eat at bada story or something if you really want Korean Japanese sushi.
