I am always hesitant to go to Jolly. It is old school kind of place with both the crutite, the staff and the majority of patrons. BUT, tonight had the excellent yellow fin tuna with a nice wasabi sauce on the side. Cannot recall having a better piece of tuna. My nephew started with the wedge, which looked amazing with thick cut bacon and wedges of blue cheese. I will not make make the error of not getting the wedge next time. As a nice finish, the prices are refreshingly old school as well. Not a high cool factor but really good meal at good price.
This place should really be called the Jolly Fisherman Retirement Home.
They have valet here and when I pulled in the attendant told me there were no more spots left and to park somewhere else even though I was eating here. After I found a spot on the street i saw cars pull in with people older than I get their car valeted. If the valet is only for elderly people that's fine with me just don't lie to my face.
Once inside I sat down with my group which was pretty large over 10 people. The food was mediocre and lacked flavor, most of us got a seafood dish. And the wait staff were very rude.
Pro:
None
Cons:
Rude wait staff
Feels like a retirement home
Mediocre food at high prices
I highly suggest you go somewhere else.
Everyone who eats here and even most of who serve here will have a story of how long they have been at or coming to the Jolly. It is know as a steak house as the name implies but most go for the excellent lobster (some say better than P. Luger's), seafood and the variety of fresh sides and vegetarian options.
The place packs it in and peaks at around 8pm and then suddenly the mostly elderly diners empty out and head for home leaving a quiet and intimate atmosphere where the waiters actually can serve properly.
We had Evan this evening and he offered a professional albeit harried service.
He was a bit lacking in even service and it definitely felt like a diner at the peak hour so all the fine dining was sucked right out of the evening during meal time.
The tables do need to be spread out more or lessened so that the wall-side tables allow for waiters to step in and service those seated on the far end, without having to expose their armpit to the diners who are closest to the passageway – as they reach over our faces to serve and pick up dishes. That was definitely annoying and I find it rude really….
The food was good though my sea bass was oily and swimming in a creme sauce. How is it that chef's don't understand that people who eat fish like a light meal without heavy fatty content. Hello???? I had two bites and felt a liver attack coming on so I left the rest.
All in all we had a great time but not sure if it was due to our own table and the good conversation or the restaurant itself.
Will be going back because of course it is a tradition on the Island's North Shore in the Roslyn hood but there are better options if you are seeking fine dining. But then again, it has that same chaos as P. Luger's and Bryant and Cooper and Limani… maybe it is us and not the restaurants???? 🙂
I've been coming here since last year but my husband's family has been coming to this place many years. They introduced this restaurant to me. I like seafood crepe and some fish dishes from here. The last time I was here I had lobster stuffed with king crab meat. My husband took me here to celebrate my birthday. It was delicious but I had to take home half of it. Still very good the next day *:) I know will be going back for more.
Must be a picky crowd. We came for a large catered dinner, and holy cow if we didn't have one of best seafood dinners we've had in a long while. Excellent clam chowder, perfectly cooked sole, potato and spinach. I probably wouldn't schlep from the city, but if I find myself in Roslyn again and I'm looking for a nice dinner? I'd absolutely hit the Jolly Fisherman again. Great meal and lovely service.
As many other reviewers stated, the Jolly Fisherman is definitely for the "older" crowd. In fact, I went for my grandma's 85th birthday because its her favorite restaurant in Long Island. That says something.
Everything seems a little bit out-dated (the decor, the setup, etc) except for the menu prices. That, for sure, has changed over the years. $55 for twin lobster tails, $35-40 m/p for a "chick" lobster.
The food is just okay. Some of the portions are really large while others are quite small, overall I would describe the dishes as…under-seasoned. The baked clams were tasty and crunchy, but I had to add salt. The broiled salmon was cooked perfectly, but I had to add salt. My boyfriend's fish and chips were crunchy and not too greasy, but I had to add salt. You get the idea.
The banana cream pie though was outstanding. I'd go back just for that.
We celebrated my grandma's 80th birthday here! I loved it. To start, they have a private parking lot and valet parking. The restaurant is beautiful and has a great view. The food and drinks were very tasty with a great list of specials!
I have been coming here since I was a kid. It is one of those places you never think to go for dinner, but once you do you are satisfied.
It has a interesting blend of old world kitch. This includes the veggies and varied breads on the table. The main course too. Every entree comes with salad and a baked potato.
The food was good. The service was good, food seasoned and tasted good. I had the soft shel crabs, and the rest of the party had lobsters.
It is a good solid choice for seafood. (We did not order any meat)
Is it the best place in the world? No. Is it filled with old people? yes.. But who cares?
Good view good service and good food.
