The Malt House FiDi
“We tried a few things off the menu, buttermilk bites, short rib sliders, truffle fries, shrimp tacos, molten chocolate cake, and the NY cheesecake.”
“Laura was very attentive & friendly – we decided we probably would have been related if we'd lived 100 years ago in Ireland.”
“Good food, good beer, great service in the relatively barren wasteland of the financial district.”

Came here last night just to take a friend out for a birthday drink and it's a chill spot. Typically avoid during the week due to it being a chaotic after work spot, but nice friendly service on a quiet weekend night. Also we got the whiskey flight and for 30 bucks it's a solid deal.
Great Spot for After-Work Drinks.
My co-workers and I go to Malt House pretty often for drinks cause it's huge and there's a lot of room for a group of people, it's never that crowded, and they have a beer we all like that's relatively hard to find.
I'm not a huge beer drinker, but they have a good selection of them, and have Kona Big Wave on Draft, which is a Hawaiian Pale Ale that's pretty hard to find here in NYC, especially on draft. Has a light and unique, almost citrus taste to it, that even women like it. So, as funny as it sounds, that's one of the biggest reasons we come here – for that beer, lol.
Malt House is popular among women as well. The women in our group and from our building (we're in a WeWork building and share space with a bunch of tech startups lol) like to join us when we tell them we're going there, cause it's clean, nice and airy. Unlike Nassau Bar where they usually pass on going with us, lol (read my review).
I know that Malt House tries to brand itself as a 'Gastropub', and we order food every so often when we're there, but to me, it's not that "Gastro" and more just Regular Bar Food.
In my opinion, it's not a True Gastropub, like:
– The Spotted Pig
– The Breslin
– The Wren
– Highlands
– Jimmy's No 43
But, nonetheless, it's a great place for beers & drinks.
My Ratings for The Malt House FiDi would be:
Food (3-Stars): I've had the Burger, Chicken Bites, Short Rib Sliders, Fries, Onion Rings and Lobster Mac & Cheese, and All were Ok, but nothing spectacular, in my opinion.
Drinks (4-Stars): Great selection of Beers and good Cocktails.
Ambiance (4-Stars): Very big & spacious, rustic & modern at the same time. Popular among women as well, so not just a 'guys pub'.
So Overall, I give The Malt House FiDi 4-Stars, but would recommend it for drinks primarily as the food is just Ok, in my opinion. Great for big groups as well, and especially for after-work socializing!
Don't bother… We stopped in for lunch after visiting the 911 memorial and were disappointed. We were seated right away so they weren't busy but my salad arrived before my ice tea. And about the seasonal market salad, just meh bland. The dressing was oily and flavorless. The actually lettuce was cheap and not super fresh. Service was also lacking so just skip it.
Maybe best known for burgers, and a monstrous wiskey bar selection, but…. I enjoyed the other foods, plant based salads and apps, and especially the fantastic service! The bar staff and especially the table servers are top notch and you feel like a customer and aren't it seems served by one person – it feels like a team effort. Everybody wants to know if you need anything or what they can do. I will be back for sure. I did see a few drama queen postings on these folks and will now discount their comments and low ratings as an anomaly and invalid. 😉 to them!!!
Malt House is huge and spacious. 5 stars for the service, and amazing beer and drink selection. Our food came out quickly and the bar tender serving us was super sweet and helpful. Unfortunately I couldn't rate higher due to the food quality and cleanliness issue that I encountered before leaving. (more on that later)
We started with a watermelon salad, which was interesting and edible, but less than impressive flavor wise. Pretty bland for what it was. We also got a burger and the buttermilk chicken sandwich. Both came with a ton of fries.
The fries were just ok, not bad, not great. The burger was decent enough, but the chicken sandwich was like eating cardboard. I'm not sure how you can mess up a fried chicken sandwich with cheese and mayo sauce, but this was totally lacking any flavor. They also serve beer in mason jars. I hate that.
As we were getting ready to leave something happened to me that i've never experienced in any NYC restaurant-or even public restrooms for that matter. In the women's bathroom stall next to the toilet was a wad of toilet paper covered in……wait for it……….PERIOD BLOOD. Few things could have grossed me out more than this. Ok, maybe a stray turd would have, but this was pretty gross. It made me wonder how long it had been since anyone on the staff had even checked the bathrooms. Just beyond nasty.
I tried the Open Face Steak Sandwich and it was delicious! They have a great selection of beers and service is good. This is a good place for a good size group who want to have a good time, get some drinks, share apps, and order your own food. I had their regular fries and their truffle fries and they're good! I highly suggest eating your main meal with the chipotle mayo because that is what topped off my meal!
Apps – YUMMY:
– Truffle Fries
– Fried Mozzerella
– Calamari
first impressions: the interior is cool, love the exposed support beam structure of the building. there's a lofted second floor dining area with 5 tables which allows you to watch the action of the bar/restaurant below. the loft also provides a quieter dining area because thursday happy hour gets kinda loud. the hostess was not that welcoming/friendly but luckily, we only had to deal with her for a short while until we got our seats.
food: i ordered the salmon po boy burger with side salad and the bf got the wagyu burger with sweet potato fries. the salmon burger was AMAZING. bf thought the salmon was a bit salty but I thought it paired perfectly with the thin slices of cucumbers and avocados which sandwiched the salmon. the bun was light and airy but still able to withstand the torrent of juices that streamed out of the burger as I ate it. The wagyu was equally delicious – super juicy and filling.
tldr; we were hungry for food while in fidi on a thursday evening, bf craved a burger, this place hit the spot.
Such a cute spot! I came here for a holiday lunch with some colleagues and we had a great time. Pretty big space with a rustic-chic atmosphere, there are at least 2 floors and we had the downstairs practically to ourselves. We ordered a ton of apps, the onion rings and sliders stick out to me the most as being oh so yummy, but everything was pretty good. I also had the chicken tacos as my entree, which was good, but I think next time I will try the fish tacos as some other people had them and they looked really good. This place is awesome for happy hour, it always looks packed during that time and I absolutely want to come back here during the summer!
