Second times a charm.
After a less than stellar meal at the LES meatball shop, the company reached out to me to suggest trying them again.
We finally made it to the adorable west village location. It's all 1980s graffiti on the out side but (maybe?) Old school 1890s decor inside.
I ordered "the kitchen sink" this time and loved it. Its 4 or 5 vegetable dishes they have covered with your choice of sauce and meatballs (pesto and veggie in keeping with the vegetable theme). Everything was fresh and delicious, and for $13 it was a good value – I wrapped up leftovers and had it as a "fourth meal."
Friend had spicy pork meatballs and polenta with a market salad. Friend loved dishes but apparently liked food first time (again, this feels like a "what do I know moment"?)
We had wonderful watermelon margaritas and were amused that they had jello shots on the menu. My friend thought they were marketing to kind of a millennial or college crowd, (bags that say " baller, born and raised "; said jello shots, etc) but there were older folks (besides us there too:) so its hard to say.
The place is kind of small but there's also outdoor seating. We sat at the communal table which was fine. Staff was super friendly.
I would definitely return!
I came for Sunday brunch and since it was my first time, the waiter was very kind and explained how to order (you check the boxes on the laminated pages for the items you want! really great concept).
My friend and I ordered one brunch item of biscuits & gravy with beef meatballs and a classic dish of the naked balls (beef) with their classic tomato with a side of broccoli.
The food came out pretty quickly and everything was delicious. The texture of the meatballs was good and not dry. And I really enjoyed both the gravy and classic tomato sauces. The biscuits were on the dry side in my opinion, and I wish they poured more gravy over it. The broccoli was cooked well and not too hard or soft.
Meatball shop is my JAM! Not super fancy, more on the chill side with amazing food. They have new specials every day that are awesome! I always do bun-less beef balls with spicy sauce (insert joke here) and their risotto, spaghetti or vegetables. I've eaten here about a dozen times and NEVER left disappointed. Anything you order will be delish, this place does no harm.
Service is great, drinks are awesome (try the homemade lemonade) and they're always playing Lauryn Hill and old school hiphop in the background.
Whether you're coming for a quick lunch, dinner or even just for dessert (you HAVE to try their homemade ice cream sandwiches…brown sugar ice cream with oatmeal raison cookies is a knock-out) I highly recommend this place!
OMG my favourite restaurant in the Village, and what a great location. And an incredible idea of how you order your food, its just like a big excel chart on a big laminated menu where you choose your type of balls, and then your type of sauce, line them up at the x and y axis, and put a big checkmark where they intersect !!!! YUM!!!! Both food AND math, what a great combo. When I was there they had amazing daily specials like reindeer and bison and rabbit, all of which I devoured !!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!! I also love the squishy picnic style servery where you get to know your neighbours !!!!
Cool cozy spot with great service. Lots of different meatball options and sauce combinations. I added a few sliders to my choices so I could taste some different meatballs. Unique way of ordering by writing on the menu with a dry erase marker. You basically choose a type of meatball and a type of sauce combination. I liked the spicy pork meatballs and the mushroom gravy sauce. I also did the classic beef with classic meat sauce which was a delicious safe bet.
Definitely worth a try. I'm looking forward to going back
I've been to other Meatball Shop locations but this was my first time at their West Village location! I got here early on a Thursday night and ate dinner at the bar, where my friend and I were served quickly. If there's a wait for a table it's a nice neighborhood to wander around.
He ordered the classic beef meatballs with tomato sauce over risotto, and I ordered the "the kitchen sink" with veggie balls and tomato sauce and a side of the daily vegetable, which that day was fingerling potatoes with chorizo and scallions (aka no vegetables). The kitchen sink would have been plenty without the side of potatoes! Both dishes were great and the price is hard to beat.
We split an ice cream sandwich (vanilla ice cream sandwiched between two soft oatmeal cookies) and it was the perfect way to end the meal! They serve it with spoons so it's very easy to split, and the size makes it conducive to do so.
Overall, the food is great, the portion sizes are generous, and it's relatively inexpensive!
I love this place. I love its food, I love it's menu & I love it's staff. It's warm, inviting & most importantly, the meatballs are fantastic!
The menu allows you to personally tailor your own dining experience, by offering a large range of both meatballs & sauces. Further options include options on how you'd like your meatballs served; on a slider, with pasta/salad or on their own. I also found the wine here to be a nice offering because really, what's Italian food without paired wine!?
Struggling to make a decision, I opted for the Sliders so that I was able to sample a range of meatballs & sauces. All 3 were delicious.
With a good number of locations throughout NYC, it's a great place for a weary traveller or local to rest their feet after a day of exploring the city.
Meatball Shoppe, I am your number one fan. I love everything about your food and strong drinks, decor, atmosphere and friendly and helpful staff. Every time I visit Boston, I make sure I stay within blocks away from at least 1 of the 3 locations you have.
My go to meal here is the chicken balls with spicy meat sauce on top of the kitchen sink. The kitchen sink veggies are usually made up of veggies I love (examples: sautéed mushrooms, beets, chickpea salad, etc). The meal is gigantic and more than filling and also very reasonably priced! My husband also loves the meatball smash- specifically spicy pork meatballs with parmesan sauce on a toasted brioche bun with delicious melted cheese. And for dessert you can't go wrong with the chocolate chip cookie chocolate ice cream sandwich. Actually you can't go wrong with anything you order here. I've tried everything and it's all consistently delicious.
I hope one day I can win a never ending amount of meals from here. That would be a dream come true.
