I had always wanted to try this place. Cool concept, very customizable food. You get to pick your meatballs (yes, they have veggie meatballs and they are good!), the sauce, and what it gets served with. Portion sizes are good. For $13 you get a sub sandwich and a side salad. I ordered that because it seemed like the best deal. Otherwise you pay $9 for four meatballs and then $6 for every side. $15 for spaghetti and meatballs is a little steep in my opinion. But it's a good place because if you come with some people who are really hungry and some who are not so hungry, all can be satisfied. Ambiance is very crowded and chaotic and they play classic rock music a little too loudly. Service was slow! Very frustrating. We ordered drinks after dinner and had to wait about 15-20 mins. My sangria also didn't have any fresh fruit in it at all, bummer. I'd come back here because the food is very tasty, but delivery might be a better option if you don't want the chaos of eating on the premises.
This is a restaurant that has meatballs "BALLS" with many creative dish selections. They have outdoors seating along Second Avenue which is wonderful, and their indoor dining area is casual with wooden tables along with a comfortable cozy bar area. Once we dined outdoors for lunch where we ordered their menu selection, the Kitchen Sink, which comes with three meatballs, your choice of sauce and their chef's choice vegetables. But this time, we decided to check out their Brunch. I had taken the advice of our waiter and ordered the Balls Benedict; Two Poached Eggs, Bacon, Two Sausage Meatballs Hollandaise Sauce on Brioche Toast. Brunch was great along with their very reasonable prices. I believe this restaurant is a cool happening place that is not pricey and caters to a young UES crowd. But that should not stop anyone, including myself enjoying a good Brunch in this energetic casual laid back restaurant.
4 stars for the food! The meatballs are just delicious, plain & simple. We ordered the chicken & pesto sauce over mashed potatoes and the classic beef with spicy meat sauce over polenta. We also split a side of veggies – roasted carrots w walnuts – since they were (very unfortunately) out of the risotto special. Everything was seriously delicious and while the portions don't look terribly big it's very filling and more than enough. Both meatball combos were great but the polenta & carrots really stole the show. SO GOOD. Of course we ordered ice cream sammies, as well. I can't believe I'm saying this but the ice cream to cookie ratio was off. Too much ice cream, there is such a thing. Luckily I showed some self-restraint and didn't eat the entire 2 lbs of ice cream. But that is the only complaint. The cookies were delicious & the ice cream was creamy and delightful. The combos were walnut brownie & coffee and walnut brownie & brown sugar. Even though I didn't finish my meal or dessert, I left FULL and very happy to have some leftover meatballs to enjoy the next day.
I was a little put off by how casual the inside was. It's a little too bright for my liking and the music was really loud so don't stop in if you're looking for something a little more intimate and cozy. I'd been to the downtown location and spent quite a while at the bar eating, drinking, and eating some more and was hoping to do the same at this spot but it really wasn't the environment so we just ate & left.
This place wasn't as good as I remembered or maybe it was just this location at the UES. Came here Saturday after noon for a quick lunch/brunch and it wasn't busy at all. They have out door seating and we were seated right away (there is also plenty of seats inside). The staff was friendly and we were waited on quick. They have a do it yourself style menu and you can construct your own dish with different kinds of meat balls.
We ordered the meatball hero: spicy pork meatballs (3),mozzarella cheese, classic tomatoe sauce on a whole wheat hero with a salad on the side. The hero was toasted well and the classic tomatoe sauce is always great. The meat balls however have become lack luster. It was spicy at all and the texture was just straight mushy. It tasted like soggy bread. Too much bread crumbs and not much pork. It lacked in texture that was really needed for that hero. Taste was good but texture killed it. The salad was basic. Oil/vinegar dressing and soggy greens.
We also ordered the Kitchen sink salad with meatballs. I have to say their pesto sauce is probably the best thing on the menu (but it can be oily and heavy). The kitchen sink consists of: quinoa salad, fennel dill olive salad, sautéed mushrooms, and a chick pea celery salad served on top a basic green salad. It was alright but everything tasted the same. We order with the dish the classic beef meatballs with pesto sauce. Once again bad texture on the meat ball but good sauce ( you get 4 meat balls).
For dessert we ordered the build it yourself ice cream sandwich. We got one brownie walnut Cookie and one chocolate chip with vanilla ice cream. Damn that was a good sandwich. Cookie was great and the ice cream is awesome. I think this alone is deserving of 3 stars.
Overall this place was better the last time I tried it. Again it could just be this location. The prices here are decent and it is a decent amount of food. Maybe the next time I come by the quality will be better.
Came here for dinner with a group of 4 on a Saturday evening. Doesn't take reservations. So although it does get crowded, they do their best to seat you quickly once your whole party has arrived. Overall pace of the restaurant is quick so we were able to be seated right away.
Drinks to start — ordered a small pitcher of the sangria that me and my brothers GF shared which she recommended. Very refreshing!
For my main, I ordered the spicy pork kitchen sink with the fried egg and the BF ordered 3 sliders (pork, beef, and the special which I believe was a meatball stuffed with mac&cheese). Mine was quite a large meal while his looked a little bit more bare, so we ended up sharing a little bit which worked out fine. I was overall very happy with mine — meatballs were tasty, great selection of veggies and salad on the side.
Love how they have a special meatball that changes frequently so that you can always try something new. Cute place, fun and lively atmosphere. Would definitely come back here again to give something else a try.
My coworker and I grabbed take out from here
Pros:
– The two dishes we ordered were very delicious (both came with four meatballs each) – pesto rigatoni classic beef ($16.33) and mushroom gravy spaghetti classic beef ($16.33)
– Cute decor inside – should try dining here but I heard about the awful service from the other Yelp reviews
Cons:
– Pricey for the portion size but it is on the UES after all
– They do deliver but you have to use the two companies they use (to me, signing up for a new account just for delivery isn't worth it)
I've been meaning to try this place for a year now, but I never got around to it. I ordered delivery (Postmates) earlier today. I've never been a meatball sub kinda girl, because I have texture issues and soggy saucy bread literally is so disgusting to me. But I was hungry and my friend was rushing me so I placed my order for a meatball sandwich anyway. (I really wanted it over pasta.. next time)
I got chicken balls with classic tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese. YUM! The chicken balls were REALLY good, and it really wasn't all that soggy! Even after a delivery! I can just imagine what it would be like fresh.
I'll definitely be getting it over pasta next time and I'll probably sit in. I hear it's nice. They have delicious sounding desserts, too- and whiskey root beer floats?! WHAT?! Yas.
I do enjoy the meatball shop.
We came here on July 4 and there's not much to say other than we had a pleasant time.
I had the kitchen sink. The meatballs seemed a bit more lean since they were firmer than I've had before.
Make sure to get an ice cream sandwich. Those are always awesome
