The Mill Coffee Company

“And there's actually quite a competition in LIC when it comes to coffee with places like Sweetleaf, Communitea, COFFEED.”

“There's a bench for outdoor seating, which is nice for those days when you'd rather enjoy some sunshine.”

“My cold brew iced coffee was nice and strong, and I was offered a free bite of a cinnamon bun, which was delicious.”

  1. Love the little sandwiches here.  Definitely pricey and sits out all day but it's still delicious.  The next delicious item would be the lavender latte.  Can't go wrong with the aroma or the milk to tea ratio here.  Lastly, thiis cafe is always full but folks are always willing to share a seat with you as there are only 4 tables.  Perfect spot to get work done with delicious food at arm's length.  Love it here.

  2. I must have arrived too early – ten minutes after opening because the credit cards had to be put in manually and things just generally took far too long. The guy who took my order did not hear that I wanted a coffee and charged me the money for an oatmeal then when he heard I wanted a pour over, as previously mentioned, he said "that's going to take a while…" And started to help someone else in line. Now if I hadn't had to wait half an hour for the whole transaction (and not just because my "pour over takes so long") and because my total was $8.50, I fail to be impressed with this place in any way.

Taste-wise, my oatmeal was fine (it was pre-packaged, so thankfully it didn't take too much effort  to create, yet I was still asked if there was enough hot water in it when I couldn't even see inside the oatmeal cup). My pour over tasted terrible and overly bitter. No thanks!!!

  3. What a cute place!  If I lived in the area I would make this my go to tea place (not a coffee drinker).  My soy chai was good and refreshing.  Next time, I should have ordered it on ice since it was a warm day.  My BFF enjoyed her coffee!

  4. One morning several months ago, an overwhelmed female barista/cashier at the Mill made me one of the worst lattes I've had (and I"m not terribly picky about my lattes).

Thankfully I came back this past Sunday, and thoroughly enjoyed my matcha latte.  The gentleman who works there on Sunday afternoons is calm and kind.  The space, while not big, holds four comfortably sized, rounded wooden tables which are well suited for a laptop or to spread out with studying material.  It does have a slight rustic feel — the tables remind me of wooden barrel surfaces and the bathroom door is sliding & substantial.

The sweet treats look delectable, but I opted for a more "nutritious" bar which contained some combination of ginger and oats.   When I am feeling more indulgent, I'll try some of the pastries.

They carry Hu Chocolates at the whopping price tag of $8.  My friend purchased it, and when I had my first bite of dark chocolate with almond butter & puffed quinoa, I was in heaven (this was before I realized it cost $8).  It's like a delicious, grown-up version of a Crunch or Hershey's Krackel bar.  The puffed quinoa really adds to the texture and the almond butter is a delicious layer which nicely complements the dark chocolate.

Expect to see many (possibly chalky) climbers here.

  5. I had the opportunity to check out The Mill recently since I work down the street. They are off to a great start!

The owner was there to greet us personally and was very friendly. He apparently owns a design business in the building and it certainly showed – the coffee shop has a very unified feel and has awesome reclaimed wood throughout.

I had an excellent latte and sticky bun (the slightest bit dry, but otherwise delicious). Like with many good coffee houses, prices were a bit high, but I certainly enjoyed it. They didn't have a ton of food options, but within the pastries, there were multiple vegan options for those into that sort of thing.

The owner mentioned that they expect to have other options as they grow and I look forward to it!

  6. I'm glad I stumbled upon this coffee shop in LIC! I enjoyed a cup of their hot chocolate, which is one of the best I've had because it was at just the right temperature (warm instead of boiling hot), was sweet without being overwhelming, and came with foam on top.

This place has a rustic / earthy vibe: there are gears made of stone behind the seating area, the sliding bathroom door is made out of wood, and the floor to ceiling glass entrance means a lot of natural light comes in during the day.

The WiFi here can be slow and frustrating to handle at times: I completed projects and am glad the WiFi password is on display so folks don't have to ask about it. But strangely enough, I had fast WiFi happening on my phone, but not on my computer.

There's a bench for outdoor seating, which is nice for those days when you'd rather enjoy some sunshine. When I'm in the area, I'll definitely be coming back here if I need a pick-me-up!

  7. This is such a rustic and clean take on coffee spots. There's only 4 tables inside with a slide out door in the back for the restroom. Free WiFi. Staff was incredibly friendly and quick to serve. We just had the iced skim latte. It was very good. We were getting ready to head to Mu Ramen. And, I had to have coffee so we made a quick stop to Mill. We didn't get their baked goods. Def will try when I return again. Glad there's another coffee spot in addition to SweetLeaf in the neighborhood!

  8. The Mill: your sweet, friendly, cozy neighborhood coffeeshop.

Only a few months old, I've had the opportunity to visit The Mill on a few different occasions.  From what I've experienced, drinks are consistent and good, and the staff is uber-friendly.  Costs are average, so no reason to go into much detail there.

They serve some odds and ends, such as Amy's Bread sandwiches in their cooler.  My favorite drink here is the Dirty Chai Latte with Soy/Almond.  They top it off with a bit of cinnamon, which is a nice touch.  This coffeeshop is a great addition to the neighborhood which hopefully will continue to live on for years to come.
